1. (a) Consider Exodus 19:1-8 and 20:1-21.

(i) State TWO characteristics of the people of God. (2 marks)
(ii) Explain how the Ten Commandments could help the Jewish people
preserve the above two characteristics. (4 marks)
(b) Give FOUR examples to explain the differences between Jesus and the
religious leaders of his time in observing the Law. (12 marks)
(c) Choose any example you have given in (b) and explain whether Jesus'
teaching is applicable to the people of Hong Kong today. (2 marks)

MARKING SCHEME

1. (a)(i) The characteristics of the People of God:

 listen to the words of God (Exodus 19:5)
 keep the covenant made between God and man (Exodus 19:6)
 be a holy people among all notions(Exodus 19:6)
 be a priest serving both man and God (Exodus 19:6) (any 2 x 1 marks)

(a)(ii) [The characteristics in (a)(i) are not necessarily refer to any specific
commandment. If candidates can reasonably explain the relation between observing
any one of the commandments and preserving the characteristics, marks should be
given to them.]
 'Worship no God but me.' (Exodus 20:3)
or 'Do not make for yourselves images......' (Exodus 20:4)
If Jewish people worship other gods, this shows that they are not totally
subjected to God, that is, they do not obey the word of God.
 'Do not use my name for evil purposes......' (Exodus 20:7)
If the Jewish people misuse God's name in making contracts with other people,
but fail to keep them, then they have abused God's name. Thus, they could not be
a serving priest.
 'Respect your father and your mother. (Exodus 20:12) or 'Do not commit murder.'
(Exodus 20:13), or 'Do not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14) or 'Do not steal.'
(Exodus 20:15) or 'Do not accuse anyone falsely.' (Exodus 20:16) or 'Do not
desire another man's house...... or anything else that he owns.' (Exodus 20:17) If
the Jewish people fail to observe these commandments, they will not become a
holy people and cannot pass on God's grace to the world (be a priest)

(b) The differences between Jesus and the religious leaders of his time in observing
the Law:
 'Do not use any name for evil purposes......' (Exodus 20:7)
The religious leaders make a vow (in God's name) casually by pointing to the
Heaven, the Earth and the Temple in order to prove their trustworthiness. Jesus
speaks against making vows at all because a person's integrity/the truth of a case
cannot be confirmed by merely making vows. (Mt 5:37)
 'Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy.' (Exodus 20:8)
The religious leaders believe that people should do nothing on Sabbath except
worshipping God. Jesus expressed that the Sabbath was made for the good of
people and that it was acceptable to save life on Sabbath. (Mk 2:23-28, 3:1-6)
 'Respect your father and your mother.' (Exodus 20:12)
Holding onto their tradition, the religious leaders excused themselves from
supporting their parents by setting aside the provision as a gift to God. Jesus
pointed out that they are canceling out God's commandment. (Mk 7:10-13)
 'Do not commit adultery.' (Exodus 20:14)
Religious leaders believes that only those who actually commit adultery should
be judged. Jesus pointed out that anyone who looks at a woman and want to
possess her is guilty of committing adultery. Thus, people should keep their heart
pure. (Mt 5:27- 28)
 The religious leaders believe that they should wash their hands according to their
traditional rules.
Jesus said that the things that make a person unclean are from ones heart. (Mk
7:2-8)
 The religious leaders suggested that Mosses allow people to divorce their wives
by providing a divorce notice. (Mk 10:4) Jesus said that the original intention of
marriage is for permanent union. So, man must not separate what God has joined
together. (Mk 10:9) .
or .any other reasonable answer (any 4 x 3 marks)
(example 1 mark, explanation 2 marks)

(c)
 Jesus' teaching on making vows requires people to tell nothing but the truth. In
Hong Kong there are always some dishonest businessman who earn money by
cheating their customers. If they accept Jesus' teaching, they will not do so.
 Jesus believes that the Sabbath is made for man. People should work for the
good of man. We can work for the others during holidays, like visiting elderly
people.
2001-CE-REL-STUD (A) Marking Scheme page 4 of 13

 Jesus pointed out that man must not separate what God has joined together. This
encourages Hong Kong people to make more effort to solve their marital
problems, rather than getting a way out through divorce.
