PETITION/PETICIN
NO TO THE NORTHERN GAS PIPELINE
We demand that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USCOE) deny the permit requested by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) in which they propose to construct a dangerous natural gas pipeline over 92 miles long. 'Via Verde' will impact more than 1,500 acres of forest, 235 rivers, streams and springs, the Karst Special Conservation Area that produces 25% of the waters of Puerto Rico, agricultural land, 360 acres of wetlands, archaeological and historical areas, in addition to risking more than 200,000 people in residential areas, recreational, churches, workplaces and universities, Public opposition to the project is strong. Polls indicate that 70% of the citizens of Puerto Rico oppose the construction of the pipeline (El Nuevo Da - March 2011). On May 1, 2011, over 30,000 people marched together to protest the Va Verde gas pipeline. Different sectors of Puerto Rican society have manifested their opposition to this project, including Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas, church groups, cultural organizations, academics, labor unions, community groups, and Puerto Rican citizens in the U.S. mainland. Casa Pueblo - Adjuntas, Puerto Rico is a community-based organization with over 30 years of service and has been nationally and internationally recognized, including through the award of a 2002 Goldman Prize, equivalent to an Environmental Nobel Prize.
