Project pinkyplates will help you to explore fundamental design theory and visual communication to begin to better understand two dimensional design. In these exercises you will be introduced to a fundamental design vocabulary. Format, layout, colour, images and text are critical in two-dimensional design. This is an essential aspect of the exercise. Please ensure that cuts are straight, edges are clean and that you fully explore the possibilities of this project.

OBJECTIVES

To develop an awareness of critical and creative thinking To begin to understand visual and verbal communication techniques that can be employed to communicate abstract ideas, design processes and productivity To begin to understand methods and techniques used to develop the ability to enquire To develop an awareness of the skills related to visual literacy and creative problem solving To develop an awareness of critical analysis through seeing thinking and imagining To develop an awareness of compositional aspects like depth, volume, light and shadow, form and object related to two and three dimensional design intention To begin to understand the learning approach called learnercentered To begin to understand the value of self evaluation for process and productivity while learning to understand the anatomy of evaluation (including critique) An awareness of design reflection; its purpose and importance To develop and understand communication skills: listening and several modes of speaking (presentation, discussion and framing constructive criticism) An understanding of the importance of producing all work throughout a projce with a high level of thought and craftsmanship

HOW TO START

1. Reproduce the title and text included on this hand-out by hand lettering your hand lettering, use light guide lines for this exercise you are asked just to use upper case letters 2. Interpret the text by way of an illustration(s) 3. All this work must be black and white including shades of gray if required no colour! 4. You must consider the layout of this work to help communicate your ideas 5. You must complete all work at the highest level of craft i.e. cuts are clean and done with a blade (eg. X-acto) not with scissors! There must not be globs of glue on the work

The placement of elements such that edges line up along common rows or columns, or their bodies along a common center. Elements in a design should be alighned with one or more other elements. This creates a sense of unity and cohesion which contributes to the designs overall aesthetic and perceived stability. Alignment can also be a powerful means of leading a person through a design. For example, the rows and columns of a grid or table can be used to make explicit the relatedness of elements sharing those rows and columns, and to lead the eyes left-to -right and top-to-bottom accordingly. Edges of the design medium (e.g., edge of a page or screen) and the natural positions on the deisgn medium (e.g., ceterlines) should also be considered alignment elements. SKILLS
Reflective thinking, principles in visual communication and composition and mechanical drawing, as well as general techniques of delineation All pinkyplate lettering must be in the style shown in Chings Architectural Drafting on p.180 you are NOT to invent your own style at this time!

TITLE: The Measured Line TEXT: Is a human invention.

It does not exist in nature. A telephone pole A tree Both are wonders of design. The trees grow that way. The telephone poles must be planned and engineered. The beauty of the measured line is implicit in its precision and logic.
