Principals Message...
The rain and cold wind have arrived and we all know what this means.yes winter is just around the corner! It is hard to believe that here we are already in November; our first term together is certainly quickly moving forward. We have enjoyed a busy and successful past month with many exciting activities: Cross Country, Visit from the Oshawa Generals Hockey Players, QSP Fundraiser, Junior Soccer and Intermediate Boys & Girls' Volleyball Tournaments, Oshawa Generals game, and to conclude our monthour very first Wax Museum! During the past few months, teachers have also been busy collecting information about their students, using it to guide instruction to meet the needs of their students. The assessment and evaluation of student learning is an on-going process and we are now preparing to enter our first reporting period. November is a great time for students and parents to get a formal update as to how things are going. The goal at this time of the year is to give parents and students a snapshot of the big picture. The progress reports will be sent out on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and will be followed by a three-way conference on Nov. 17th (in the evening) and Friday, Nov. 18th (a.m.). No grades or letters will appear on the report. Three way conferencing will give you the opportunity to celebrate your child's learning and progress. It is also the time for our students to set realistic goals and to develop plans with their teacher and parents to support the achievement of these goals. Please note that the request for interviews and explanation regarding three way conferencing were sent home last week. We look forward to meeting you at the student progress conferences on November 17th and 18th. M. de Villers

DRPS Food and Toy Drive Every year, the Durham Region Police Service organizes a Food and Toy Drive to assist needy families in Durham Region. Last year's version of the annual campaign distributed food and toys to hundreds of needy families. We are very excited to announce that the DRPS will be kicking off their 2011 campaign at Julie Payette Public School! The event, hosted by Ken Shaw of CTV News, will take place on November 17. If you would like to help out, we will be accepting unwrapped toys or food from now until the event. Please help make this years Food and Toy Drive the most successful yet!! Eco- Club The Eco-Club has been busy this fall educating staff and students about GOOS (Good On One Side) paper boxes, how to sort classroom recyclables, and organizing Waste Reduction Week. Our group of grade 5-8 students meets every Day 2 at lunch. We want our school and environment to be eco-friendly. Please remember to pack a waste free lunch whenever you can. Not only is this good for the environment, but these lunches are usually cheaper! Remember we are trying to be a Boomerang Schoolwhatever comes to school, goes back home. Thank you for your help. Breanna and Chantel Parents... Are you looking for more information about the French Immersion Program? The staff at Julie Payette P.S., in conjunction with the Whitby Chapter of Canadian Parents for French, will be offering a workshop in the new year, designed to provide information to parents of students at Julie Payette. In an effort to best meet your needs, we will be looking to you for help in determining the workshop topic. Would you like to know more about the long-term benefits of French Immersion? Do you wonder about what resources are available to help your child with the program? We will be conducting an online survey to get feedback and ideas for topics in the very near future. Look for the survey on our school website or plan on visiting the school's computer lab during the November interview dates to complete the survey. We value your input! Stay tuned for the workshop title and date...

Bully Prevention Week

November 14 18, 2011 What is Bullying? Bullying is typically a form of repeated, persistent, and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived power imbalance. The 4 Rs of Bullying Prevention Know what bullying looks like, sounds like and feels like. Understand the difference between bullying and conflict. If you don't like what you see happening, invite the victim to walk away with you. Choose an upstander action. Report facts to a trusting adult. Know the difference between tattling and reporting. Choose to make positive actions. Be a part of the solution. Choose to be an upstander. November 2011 Page 2

Kiss and Ride HELP!!! We still need parent volunteers to help us with morning Kiss and Ride. If you regularly drive your children to school, and are willing to volunteer for 30 minutes, once per week, please contact Mr. Rousell.

KISS and RIDE

Morning Arrival The safe arrival of our students is a top priority for the staff at Julie Payette. Between 7:50 and 8:05, the bus drop off, kiss and ride, and crosswalks, and playground are all supervised. However, at 8:05 teachers need to leave their assignments to greet their students, leaving the parking lot and playground unsupervised. If you choose to drive your children to school, please have them here before 8:05 so that they are safe as they enter the school, and so that they are on time for class.

Late Arrival Being on time is so important for academic success! Learn to improve your reputation and your chances for academic success with these tips for being right on time--all the time! 1. Rethink the meaning of "on time." People who are always on time are really people who arrive early every day-and acknowledge that things can go wrong to set them back several minutes. When things do "go wrong" these students still arrive on time! 2. Understand the importance of being on time. Students who are always on time are the people who earn the best grades, win scholarships, and get into great colleges. In the working world, the people who are always on time are the people who get promotions. 3. Get enough sleep. If you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, then make a serious effort to get to bed earlier. Sufficient sleep is essential for maximum brain function anyway, so you really don't want to ignore this aspect of your scholastic habits. 4. Give yourself a realistic amount of time to dress and groom. You can do this with a simple exercise: Get up early one morning and time yourself (moving at a normal pace) to see how long it takes you to get ready. You may be surprised at the time it takes, especially if you find you have been trying to squeeze forty minutes worth of grooming into fifteen minutes each morning. 5. Know exactly when you need to be at your destination and subtract ten or fifteen minutes to establish your arrival time. This will give you time to go to the restroom or chat with friends. 6. Set your clocks forward by ten minutes. This is a dirty little psychological trick that many people play on themselves. The funny thing is, it really works! Dressing for the Weather Winter will soon be upon us. We are already experiencing cool mornings. We remind all parents to send extra clothing as the winter winds will be picking up shortly and recesses can be very long when children are not dressed appropriately. We also recommend that parents/guardians send extra clothing for children of the younger grades for those days when it is really wet and slushy. Playtime outside is important for the children and appropriate dress helps to make it a more enjoyable and healthy experience. Please make sure to label your child's clothing, especially coats, sweaters, hats, mitts/gloves as these are typically the items that end up in our lost and found box. Our lost and found bins have been growing at a steady pace since the beginning of the school year and we are encouraging parents to drop by and look at what has been left behind. We have lots of treasures that need to return to a good home! Unclaimed items will be sent to a local charity after Nov. 18th. Eco-School We are trying our best to live as an EcoSchool and are, therefore, doing what we can to reduce the amount of paper and waste that we produce in the school. We are asking our students to continue to participate in our boomerang lunches and also we encourage parents to read our monthly newsletters on line. Your child's agenda will have a note when a newsletter has been posted, please regularly check our website. We have added some links and are continuously working on improving the content.

Congratulations to Storm Stevenson, Our Volunteer of Distinction Award Winner Parent volunteers are a valuable part of the school community and every year we have an opportunity to recognize one for exceptional commitment to assisting the school. On Thursday, October 20th Storm Stevenson received her Volunteer of Distinction Award at a special ceremony held at Sinclair Secondary School. Storm was a vital member of F. M. Heard's volunteer group, always offering her support to staff and students. Storm is now a valued member of the Julie Payette support team and we are very thankful of her assistance with our morning Kiss and Ride program. Merci et flicitations Storm!

Merci

And a big MERCI to all of our parent volunteers On behalf of the staff and community, a special thank you goes out to all of the parents who already have given up so much of their time and effort to organize and support events at our school such as .the QSP magazine campaign, pizza days (including pizza count days), classroom volunteers, and parent drivers. Merci!

Head Lice Please make a thorough check of your child's head on a weekly basis to check for Head Lice. Watch for itching behind the ears or in the nape of the neck. If you detect Head Lice, please call the school. Early Dismissal On Friday, December 23rd, students will be dismissed ONE HOUR EARLY at 1:35 p.m. Bussed students will be picked up by their respective buses one hour earlier. Please make arrangements for your children. Healthy Snacks for Recess/Lunch With an increasing awareness of healthy snacks in elementary schools, we recommend that students bring non-sugar snacks for recess and lunch. Some suggestions for healthy snacks: yogourt cup or tube, cheese string, whole grain crackers, milk pudding cup, fruit or vegetable slices and rice crackers. Lest We Forget November also marks a time of remembrance. Students who take part in Brownies, Guides, Sparks, Cubs, Scouts, Beavers and Cadets are invited to wear their uniform to school that day. Their uniforms are symbolic of citizenship and service to others and are therefore most appropriate for the occasion. Poppies will be distributed to all students. Our students will commemorate the sacrifice of our soldiers in an assembly on November 11th. Two Julie Payette students will also present a wreath at the Whitby Cenotaph on behalf of our school community. Au revoir Mme Laszlo! Earlier this month, we had to say goodbye to Mme Laszlo, one of our primary release teachers. Mme Laszlo accepted a full time position as a primary teacher at Captain Michael VandenBos P.S. We were sorry to see her leave but know that she has the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to support the students at CMV. We wish her well and we hope that we will welcome her back to JP one day soon!

Au Revoir Mme Laszlo !

Dates of Significance
November 1 - All Saints Day (Roman Catholic and Anglican) Since very early times, Catholics have had a practice of observing the anniversary of the death of a martyr for the faith. As the number of these martyrs grew, there was a fear that some martyrs would be missed, and/or that some would be honoured more than others. For this reason, the Catholic Church instituted All Saints day. November 5 - Hajj (Islam) On this day, Muslims on Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) attend a service on the hillside and plains near Mount Arafat. Hajj concludes with Eid al Adha when those not traveling to Mecca take part. November 7 Eid al Adha (Islam) * Muslims celebrate this festival in remembrance of Prophet Abraham's readiness to sacrifice of his son Ishmael to God. On Eid al Adha Muslims sacrifice domestic animals, like sheep, and cows. This sacrifice of animals is made by Muslims to pay a tribute to Prophet Abraham, as he was ready to sacrifice his son, however, God gave him a Sheep to sacrifice instead. For more information : www.theeid.com November 11 - Remembrance Day (Canadian) World War 1 came to an end at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918 and special services have been held on this day ever since the first one in 1918. This day was known as Armistice Day for many years. In 1931 the Canadian Parliament changed the name to Remembrance Day and November 11th is now a time to remember those who served Canada in past wars and also those who continue to provide military service to Canada today. November 12 - Birth of Baha'u'llah (Bah') While Oct. 20th is recognized by Bah''s as the birth of the founder of the religion, Siyyid 'Ali Muhammad, on November 12 the birth of Mirza Husayn ' Ali (Baha'u'llah) is also recognized. Baha'u'llah was known as the Great Divine Teacher and appeared soon after Bab. He was interested in improving the lives of the entire human population. He encouraged education for everyone and equality for the sexes. He told his followers to reach out to followers of all religions in spirit and friendship. This is a day of great celebration for Bahai's around the world. For more information : www. bah'.org November 16 - Louis Riel Day This day commemorates the life of Louis Riel, a Canadian politician, Mtis leader, and a founder of the province of Manitoba. He envisioned a world that embraces all cultures. Riel was the leader of two resistance movements against the Canadian government in an attempt to ensure Mtis rightsthe Red River rebellion and the North-West rebellion. Riel was ultimately executed for advocating for the rights of his people. However, in recent years, there has been more widespread appreciation of his cause and his contribution to Canada. November 25 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (UN) On Dec. 17, 1999 the General Assembly of the United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The date came from the date of the assassination in 1961 of three of four Mirabal sisters on orders from the dictator, Rafael Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic. The Mirabel sisters were political activists.
