E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

E-LEARNING
DEFINITION – CHARACTERISTICS – BENEFITS – RESOURCES – TOOLS

E-Learning is an emerging field in India and will go a long way to assist in managing the

problems faced in the teaching process.

E
-
In particular, e-learning has the capacity to secure continuous control of the learning

environment and to perform student appraisals, which contribute significantly to

enhancing teaching and learning effectiveness.

L
The "e-class" concept will significantly advance the region's information technology (IT) E
A
education and training. The focus is on utilizing technology to provide better and more

advanced educational systems.

The concept of e-learning can provide an opportunity to introduce a higher level of

R
practicality in education and training, forging closer links with workplaces and the N
I
practical application of learning rather than with the more theoretical content that often

makes up much of traditional classroom based learning.

The World Wide Web is becoming ever more utilized in higher education. According to
N
Olson and Wisher [1], web based education offers its learners “unparalleled access to G
instructional resources, far surprising the reach of the traditional classroom”. E-learning,

however, is not meant to substitute the existing traditional classroom based learning

system, instead it supplements the traditional class room and also attempts to provide

more learning options for the masses as per their convenience.

3
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

E-learning helps the learner overcome the obstacles in accessing the education such as

geographical boundaries, classroom availability or the presence of instructors. In digital

learning system mostly learners have to manage themselves and there is a lesser role

that the educators are expected to play. The self-motivation is most crucial for those who

choose e-learning for their education.

The learner is expected to have basic qualities like reading skills, functional computer

literacy, etc.

Key skills required for the e-learning include :

the ability to set learning goals

develop a learning plan

identify resources for learning (both human and material)

implement the plan

evaluate the learning.

It is also very important that a learner must have technical literacy and functional

knowledge about the hardware and software. E-learning is a more effective learning

system to utilize the available time and money in an efficient way.

4
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

CHARACTERISTICS
OF E-LEARNING

Our traditional learning process could be characterized as centralized authority (content

is selected by educator), strong push delivery (teacher push knowledge to students),

lack of personalization (content must fulfill the needs of many) and the static/ linear

learning process (unchanged content). But learning process should be - fast, just-in-time

(cheap) and relevant (problem-dependent), which is possible with the distributed,

student-oriented, personalized, non-linear/dynamic learning process – what is possible

in e-learning.

Important characteristics of e-learning are :

• Pull- student determines agenda

• Interactive- responds to problem at hand

• Non-linear- allow direct access to knowledge in whatever sequence make sense to the

situation at hand

• Systematic- learning occurs as in integrated activity

• Continuous- learning runs in the parallel loops and never stops

• Distributed- content comes from the interaction of the participants and the educators

• Personalized- content is determined by the individual user’s needs and aims to satisfy

the needs of every user

• Dynamic- content changes constantly through user input,

experiences, new practices, business rules and heuristics

The origin of e-learning is computer-based-training (CBT), which was an attempt to

automate education, replace a paid instructor and develop self-paced learning. The

objective of e-learning is not only recorded education (as in CBT), but also education

without barriers of time and distance, and customized to users’ and business needs.

5
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

BENEFITS
OF E-LEARNING

Anywhere, anytime, anyone.

A very large percentage of the professional workforce already uses computers. Technical

obstacles, such as access, standards, infrastructure, and bandwidth, will soon cease to

be an issue. The growth of the World Wide Web, high-capacity corporate networks, and

high-speed desktop computers will make learning available to people 24 hours a day,

seven days a week around the globe. Businesses will now be able to distribute training

and critical information to multiple locations easily and conveniently. Employees can

have access to training when it is convenient for them, at home or in the office.

Considerable cost savings due to elimination of travel expenses.

The biggest advantage of e-learning is that it eliminates the expense and inconvenience

of getting the instructor and students in the same place. Corporations save at least 50–

70% when replacing instructor-led training with electronic content delivery. Courses can

be pared into shorter sessions and spread out over several days or weeks so that the

business doesn’t lose an employee for days at a time.

Access to just-in-time training

With Web-based training, instructors can update lessons and materials across the entire

network instantly. This keeps content fresh and consistent. Students can have immediate

access to the most current data. Information can be retrieved just before it is required,

rather than being learned and forgotten. Technology-based training has proven to have a

50–60% better consistency of learning than traditional classroom learning.

6
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

Higher retention of content through personalized learning.

The customized learning material helps students have more control over their learning

process and understand the material better, leading to faster learning, compared to

instructor-led training. The delivery of content in smaller units, called “Learning Objects,”

contribute further to a more lasting learning effect. While the average content retention

rate for an instructor-led class is only 58%, the more intensive eLearning experience

enhances the retention rate by 25 – 60%.

Improved teamwork and interactivity among students.

Teaching and communication techniques in an interactive online environment include

case studies, story-telling, demonstrations, role-playing, simulations, streamed videos,

online references, personalized coaching and mentoring, discussion groups, project

teams, chat rooms, e-mail, bulletin boards, tips, tutorials, FAQs, and wizards. Distance

education is more stimulating and encourages more critical reasoning as it allows the

kind of interaction that takes place totally in small group settings. Online students have

more peer contact with others in the class, enjoy it more, spend more time on class

work, understand the material better, and perform nearly 20% better than students who

are taught in a traditional classroom.

Online training is more approachable than instructor-led

courses.

The risk-free environment of an online course helps students try out new things and

make mistakes without exposing themselves to ridicule. This is particularly valuable

when trying to learn soft skills, such as leadership and decision-making. The learning

program shows the students where and why they went wrong. Students can always go

back and try again.

7
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

E-LEARNING RESOURCES

Teaching and learning through e-learning system is not like the traditional classroom

based learning. In an e-learning system the learning sources are available virtually. For

this purpose they use Internet as the key agent in the flexible delivery of courseware to

respective learners. Content of the courseware include all theoretical as well as practical

part of the course and learners are free to practice on their own. There are different

kinds of e-learning resources prepared by different institutions. Some of them are

explained below.

1. CD-ROM Resources

The rise of the personal computers and CD-ROM are significant developments of

Information and Communication Technology and they have helped the e-learning

education system to a great extent. It is easy to store e-learning resources in digital

format. The complete course material can be distributed to the learner through the CD-

ROMs. CD-ROMs saw a growth in the use of multimedia Computer Based Training

(CBT) or Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) packages, which seemed to offer a solution

to some of the problems faced by the modern educators [3]. Multimedia CD-ROMs have

been used not only in e-learning but also as an additional support to traditional learning

and teaching system.

2. E-Book

E-book is the offspring of the modern information and communication technology

development and it is very important media in e-learning programme to deliver course

content or related references to the participants. Nowadays it has become a common

practice of publishers to bring the electronic version as well along with the book form.

Learners are not required either to visit any library or to roam around in the market but

8
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

the e-version would come to their desktop. The below mentioned is a model of recently

published electronic book/v-book, which provides couple of CDs to understand the

application of modern technology in libraries.

3. Web Resources

Internet and the Web became the most dominant component of modern teaching and

learning system. Instead of creating the course content in traditional print format the

institute designs web based learning materials or courseware and provides the same to

its learners over the web. Learners are free to either navigate through the resources

online or download it into their desktop for later reference. This will also avoid the delay

in delivery of course content. Web based resources are very easy to update as and

when required unlike the printed course materials which are difficult to change when it

becomes out dated in the due course.

4. Reusing Digital Learning Resources

The creation of digital learning resource is required necessary investment and effort. It is

also meant for large number of student communities. Hence, the online resources

should be reusable. This will help to avoid duplication of work in future and save the

extra expenditure of the institution. These digital learning resources produced by the

institutions, experts, teachers and students should be preserved in a digital repository for

the present as well as future use. These resources should be arranged by using

educational standard for the easy and reliable access of information to the learners.

9
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

E-LEARNING TOOLS AND METHODS

There are many methods used in traditional learning system like lectures, blackboard,

discussions, seminars, overhead projectors, etc. There is an advantage of having face-

to-face interaction between the students and teachers, which helps both of them to

communicate better and make clarifications then and there. But in e-learning process,

the possibility of having direct face-to-face interaction is far lesser. Instead, they use

various virtual methods or tools to fulfill the needs of the learners. Some of them are

briefly explained below:

1. Internet Audio Conferencing

Internet audio conferencing is a fruitful and simple method of online interaction between

the learners. The usage of Internet telephones will allow a learner to make live audio

conversation with peers or experts all over the world with the least expense. For this,

both of the learners should be connected with network for making the interaction and

also appropriate Internet phone software should be available. Microsoft has developed

one audio conferencing software namely NetMeeting.

2. Video Conferencing

Video conferencing is a unique form of communication in highereducation system. It

facilitates two-way audio as well as video communication among the different learners

and instructors, who are spread across the world. In India IGNOU started this method to

make an effective interaction between the students and instructors; it is one-way video

and two-way audio system. This system allows learners to watch the live discussion and

at the same time speak their queries to the experts who are sitting at the centre.

10
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

3. Multimedia Conferencing System

Multimedia conferencing system allows use of text matters, graphics, sounds, moving

pictures, etc. in their discussion. Multimedia conferencing is more interesting and it has

great advantages. Learner can use the facility of one-to-one as well as one-to-many

discussion. This helps them to improve their personality and promotes their social

interactions.

4. E-mail

Electronic mail is the most commonly used tool in e-learning system to communicate

among the learners. Different learners located in various parts of the world, even in

remote areas, can share their knowledge without worrying about the geographical

boundaries. It is possible for the recipient to provide immediate response. One can

attach text files, spreadsheet, images, graphics, audio and video files, etc and send

through the e-mail.

5. Online Discussion Groups

Online discussion is one of the powerful new communication tools to promote online

interactions. E-learners can discuss online and get the clarification of their queries by

interacting with the peers, mentors, experts, instructors, etc.

6. News Group

With the help of news group, the learner can post queries on any topic or subject and

others reply for the same. There may be different subject areas of which one can look up

for one’s own interest and reply for it. Each and every message posted in news group

will be spread all over the world by using number of news servers.

11
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

7. Online Chat Room

Online chat is a kind of synchronous communication with which students can interact at

any time. It has a great role in e-learning systemto enable real time communication

among the course participants, which is an important element of campus education

system. It enables the learner to chat with peers about the various issues related to the

course content and also exchange different views. This instant messaging tool has great

effect in e-learning system and it enables the students in remote area to have informal

communication with other students.

8. Virtual Laboratories

Laboratory is an important component of teaching and learning system whether it is

classroom based or web based. For e-learning aspirants there are virtual laboratories to

conduct their experiments. Virtual laboratory is a place in which real experiments can be

performed in real but physically separate places, and such sites are becoming more

common. A good virtual laboratory requires high speed networking technologies, which

are costly to install and maintain.

9. Online Assessment

Assessment is another important element of teaching and learning system with which

instructors can understand competencies and progress of their students. The institution

or organization will award a deserving grade to the learners according to their

performance. In an online system learner can find out their question on the respective

web site and can answer them through the web. It may be objective type such as

multiple choice questions or objective like short answer questions or essay type

12
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

questions. This arranges an opportunity to provide automatically marked assessment

and feedback to students.

E-LEARNING – INDIAN SCENARIO

India is investing 3.2% of its GNP in education, whereas the world average is 4.6% and

developed countries invest about 5.3%. In the above context, there is a lack of general

awareness of e-learning in India.

However, the awareness of the Internet is catching up with that in developed countries.

The Internet is now reaching up to 10 million people. This number is much more than the

population of many countries and is increasing daily.

The main barrier to more widespread use of the Internet and its associated technologies

is bandwidth availability. However, the scene in India is encouraging in this area.

Bharti Enterprises has already laid a 3500-km fiber network in 22 major towns. Railtel

Corporation of India, a public-sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, has

been formed to modernize the railway communications system.

Railways have the right of way for 62,800 kilometers Tata broadband has around 600

kilometers of fiber and has plans for 5000 kilometers in 53 commercially important cities.

Hughes Telecom, Spectranet, and many other companies are participating in this field.

Once there is a complete network and associated bandwidth, the use of the Internet and

e-learning will definitely catch up with that of current leaders.

13
E-LEARNING – THE NEW WAVE OF LEARNING

INTERNET USERS
INDIAN SCENARIO

There are 38.5 million Indians Online Today. The Internet offers an audience that

will grow to a 100 million users by 2007-08.

The Internet offers unlimited shelf space and isn’t bound by operational timings and

geographical boundaries; with an opportunity to cater to country wide city markets (for

consumers and suppliers alike) at a comparative miniscule cost. E-commerce activities

have spread across the country to the prominent 'tier-II' cities and towns which are

witnessing a pick-up in online retailing activity and increased transaction values.

As per IAMAI forecasted estimates below e-commerce transactions will cross the Rs

2000 crore mark (2006-2007) which translates into an increase of over 300% from

financial year 2004-05.

INTERNET ACCESS POINT

INDIAN SCENARIO

39% Users still prefer to access Internet from Cyber Cafes

Home Access on the Rise- from 23% in 2003 to 31% in 2006.

Cyber Cafes or Public Access points with a 39 per cent share of users continue to be the

most important internet access points in India. This was revealed by the “Internet in

India” study jointly carried out by the Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)

and IMRB International. It is, however, doubtful as to how long this dominance will

continue, since the share of cyber cafes has been steadily declining from a peak of 52%

in 2003. Access from home showed a marginal increase to 22% from 20% in 2003.

Access from home, on the other hand has steadily risen from 23% in 2003 to 31% in

2006 and prima facie seem to be gaining on the loss of “market share” by cyber cafes.

One of the most significant finds of the study was that access from schools and colleges

remained insignificant at 6%. This remains a major cause of concern since internet

access through schools and colleges not only creates the next generation of users but

also goes a long way in reducing digital and hence socio-economic divide.
