Message from the President

n 2008, then-President-Elect, Chris Buczynski returned from The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc.s Fall Conference inspired by the model of IssueBased Community Impact which she had learned about and was instrumental in having The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. adopt the model for our community programming. The model involved a paradigm shift from project-based work to community impact through community involvement, collaborations and strategies that are based on an understanding of the community, services provided and interests of our membership concerning one particular issue. As a result, instead of JLSB's volunteer hours and funds being spread throughout the community to an array of agencies that address multiple issues and, therefore, make less of an impact, our resources would be concentrated on one issue as part of a strategically developed program. We began the following year by undertaking a systematic assessment of community needs in order to determine the issues facing our community and how JLSB could best affect positive change. After choosing to focus our efforts on early childhood development as part of our larger issue of improving education within our community, last year JLSB provided Done in a Days, book studies and trainings for members to learn about what needs to be done to effectively address early childhood development and identified The Brain Train as a program that would accomplish the outcomes we seek to make. After the time spent building and developing a plan for issue-based community impact, we are finally ready to begin our programming in the area of early childhood development with The Brain Train. Yet as you will learn in this issue of League Lore, the Community Research Committee has found our focus is still quite broad making it difficult to define the impact or change JLSB is seeking

to make and compelling us to drill down our issue and focus identification even further. To me, the training opportunity that comes from narrowing our focus even more is what the Junior League is all about. In 1901, Mary Harriman founded the first Junior League to improve child health, nutrition and literacy among immigrants living on the Lower East side of Manhattan. Realizing their lack of experience in dealing with the issues that faced people seeking help at the settlement house where 80 Junior League members volunteered, Mary Harriman and fellow League leaders brought together experts on the settlement movement to provide lectures and instruction to League members. Mary Harriman found that with better preparation came greater engagement, which is what impelled her to ensure that Junior Leagues became effective training organizations. So while JLSB provides our members enriching volunteer opportunities, it is the training our members receive that sets it apart from other volunteer organizations in the community. And by becoming more knowledgeable about the aspects of early childhood development where League can make an impact as we refine our focus this year, we will be furthering a cornerstone of the Junior League's Mission. All my best,

MISSION The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. is a member of an international organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. VISION The Junior League: Women Around the World as Catalysts for Lasting Community Change. ISSUE Early Childhood Development

WOMEN ON THE BLOCK

by Erin Harding (A), Nominating Chair

Pam Newman, our Sustainer member, boasts one of the most memorable JLSB moments we've heard yet! She had the chance to meet Eunice Shriver in 1987 as the project chair when JLSB hosted a "Family Room" for parents of Special Olympians. Pam is a JLSB veteran (chairing Thrift Shop to Holiday Ball to Nominating plus servving a stint on the Board) and is a one-woman focus group for many of her hometown's educational institutions - she attended Adams High School, Holy Cross College, Saint Mary's College (BS Degree) and the Univeristy of Notre Dame (MSA degree). She has served our community in a myriad of ways, perhaps most notably for the last 18 years as program director for Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka. Pam's mastery of ball juggling is going to come in handy for her this November - daughter Chelsea is getting married and son Corey (and his wife Kelly) are expecting. This little one will be husband Chip and Pam's first grandchild! I bet she can't wait to introduce the baby to her love of golf, which includes a past hole in one!! Favorite Restaurant - Garden @ Carriage House in the summer; Favorite Movie - Somethings Gotta Give and 27 Dresses; Favorite Book - The Help and all of Janet Evonavichs novels; Favorite Junk Food - Pizza; Favorite vacation spot - California: Wine Country & Half Moon Bay.
Our Active member and current Training Resources Chair is Laura O'Sullivan. A funny coincidence, she also has a Kennedy connection - she grew up dreaming of becoming South Bend's first female mayor, and during the last election, she escorted Caroline Kennedy to speaking engagements from Chesterton to Lafayette to Indianapolis. She's also active in the community in the Achievement Forum of South Bend, Alzheimer Services and the March of Dimes. Laura moved back to her hometown six years ago after stints in Washington, DC, Boston and Chicago. She currently lives on the St. Joseph River in Buchanan with husband Dan, son Casey (in 5th grade at Stanley Clark) and dog Artie. Artie is both black and white blue and brown - fur and eyes respectively! Fall is Laura's time of year - she loves football season, but we'll have to check to see which college team gains her loyalty . .. the Irish or the Boilermakers (she's a '93 Purdue Alum)! Favorite Restaurant - Uptown Kitchen; Favorite Movie - 16 Candles; Favorite Book or last book you read - Currently reading In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson; Favorite Junk Food - French Fries; Favorite vacation spot - Chicago

Our New Member Katie Stachuras husband Mark brought this Home-woodFlossmoor, IL native to Michiana last October to our friendly community, and her passion for women and children have now led her to join JLSB. Katie graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Special Education, and she also walked on the wild side with a full array of pink and red hair colors! These days she's also available to help all of us look beautiful as a Mary Kay independent consultant. She and Mark are the recent parents of a brand new mini golden doodle puppy named Lady, so she has already made friends with this author (whose dog is the same breed!). Please take the time to get to know Katie and welcome her to our wonderful organization! Favorite Restaurant - Uptown Kitchen, Favorite Movie - The Proposal, Favorite Book or last book you read - The Help, Favorite Junk Food - Chocolate

Membership Nominating - Urban Legends

by Erin Harding (A), Nominating Chair n Sunday, November 6, the Nominating Committee will meet for the crucial task of slating the 2012-2013 Board of Directors. These placements are absolutely crucial to the future of our League as well as to the training and development of the lucky ladies who apply and ultimately accept these roles. Please take the time to consider the amazing opportunity of serving on the Board! Many resources are available for you to become more informed. Reach out to current Board members, talk to your Placement Advisor, look at the Policies and Procedures on the website, read the reports from last year's Board members (beginning on page 10 of the Administration section of the yearbook) or check the Placement Catalog (beginning on page 15 of the Placement section of the yearbook). In order to test your knowledge (and dispel some urban legends), please complete the true/false questions below! Answers appear on page 12! The Nominating Committee will be in contact with active members who are eligible for these roles. We also encourage interest from sustaining members who are eager to reactivate and lead. Board applications are available in the News and Reminders section of the Member Home page on the website. Serving on the Board is both an honor and a responsibility, and the Nominating Committee strongly encourages you to express serious interest by submitting an application before Friday, October 28. In addition, please remember to let your Placement Advisor know how to reach you on Slating Day (November 6). If you have any questions about the process, please do not hesitate to contact Erin Harding (Chair), Chris Grossnickle (Assistant Chair), Patty Brady, Jessica Hilary, Anne Riordan or Marsha Williams. We look forward to your interest and commitment to the continued strength of JLSB!

September Membership Awards

by Deb Grounds (A), Membership Vice President great team of individuals were recognized in September for their time and outstanding work on signage redesign and on TV and radio media to promote Thrift Shop. They have also worked diligently on keeping the JLSB Facebook page updated and fresh. Please congratulate our September Membership Award receipients who make up the Marketing Committee: Jennifer Chadwell (A, Chair), Kathy Friend (A) and Beth DeLemos (A). A second year active was honored in September. She is another League dynamo who not only serves as a New Member Liaison but also finds time to volunteer on committees she is not even placed by using her talent as a graphic designer. She has spent hours designing the posters for Thrift Shop and the invitation for Holiday Ball. Last year, she was on the Chefs' Showcase committee as the recorder and also designed that invitation. The recipient of the second September Membership Award went to Kim DeCook (A).

Placement Interviews
by Deb Grounds (A), Membership Vice President ts that time of year again where we as members need to evaluate whether our current placement is a good fit and begin thinking about what we want to do next year. Your Placement Advisor can help you answer these questions. Every member needs to take advantage of placement interviews to learn about committees in which they may have interest, to express concerns and to talk about your current placement and whether it is the right fit for you. During this interview your Advisor will review the three year placement plan, work with you on filling out your Wish List for future placements, review the revised membership model and talk to you in general about your League experience. The Wish Lists will be used for Slating Day and Double Board Appointment Day. For those members interested in chairing a committee and/or serving on the Board, you should make sure this is reflected on your wish list. Also, please let your Advisor know whether you are interested in other League training such as Organizational Development Institute (ODI) where you would receive training through The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) on different aspects of League such as Community Impact, Fund Developmnet, Membership Development and Finance. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with members from other Junior Leagues and learn what they do. You will come back with ideas that may help you in all aspects of your life. It is a great experience. Placement interviews will be held the week of October 16, and your Advisor will make arrangements with you on where to meet. OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011

TRAINING
by Deb Grounds (A), Membership Vice President & Laura OSullivan (A), Training Resources Chair

Fulfilling Your Annual Training Requirement

Discover Your Strengths with this New Training Opportunity

ne of the training opportunities being offered this year allows a member to earn one point toward their membership requirements by completing an online assessment contained in Tom Rath's book, StrengthsFinder, designed to measure your personal talent. Most people spend time working on improving their weaknesses but do not spend much time developing or understanding their strengths. Research shows that when people are able to focus on areas that are strengths they are more engaged which means they are more productive, satisfied and happy. This evaluation can serve as intra-personal tool to help you in your personal life, with your career and as a member in League. JLSB will purchase the books in October for members interested in participating so please contact Training Resource Chair Laura O'Sullivan at pumapink@gmail.com or 312.505.3102 by October 16. A training session will be held on February 22 to review the assessments and what they mean. This training session must be attended to earn the point to satisfy your membership requirements.

Annual Training will be on October 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Two tracks will be offered. The Brain Train Volunteer Track will be held at 315 West Jefferson, South Bend where members wishing to volunteer at this year's project will learn proper guidelines for play with children, how to interact with the families and why play is so important in brain development. It will also allow each League member the opportunity to explore The Brain Train play spaces and decide in what capacity they feel the most comfortable volunteering. A Personal Wellness Track will be held at the DoubleTree downtown and will include information on nuturition and fitness. Remember that under our new Membership Model, Annual Training is required for ALL Active Red members. Annual Training is an option for Active Silver and Gold members, however, in lieu of attending members need to receive another pre-approved training outside of League. Please contact your Placement Advisor if you have any questions regarding these requirements.

LEAGUE LORE

OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011

Dear Sustainers,
Welcome to the first of what we hope will be a great addition to League Lore - the "new and improved" Sustainer Corner. In an effort to streamline communications among Junior League's Sustainers as well as to integrate more effectively with active members, we've decided to "resurrect" the former, more detailed Sustainer Section of League Lore - some of you may even remember years ago when it was called "Hot Flashes." The column will stop short of "did you know Jane had new draperies installed," but we do want to know what's going on in your lives. Big things. You know - new jobs, kids' weddings, your own weddings, kids' jobs, who's having babies, funny stuff, Junior League memories, fabulous trips you're taking, etc. And send photos! We love that kind of stuff. OK I'll start: I've had my first children's book published. It's called Clashmore Mike Comes Home and it's the story of Notre Dame's original mascot. Surprisingly, few people know that a little Irish Terrier was the football team's mascot from 1924-1965 before the leprechaun replaced him. Anyway, it's a great story, and you can purchase it online at www.ndclashmoremike.com, at the Notre Dame Bookstore or from me.

Sustainer Corner
by Susan Guibert
Sustainer Chair

Finally, Trish Ross hosted the Sustainer Committee at her home last month. This efficient little group nailed down several dates and times for upcoming events: Mary Harding has graciously agreed to host the Sustainer Holiday Luncheon at her home on Wednesday, December 8. More details to follow. Additionally, Linda Bancroft has agreed to host the Sustainer Spring Luncheon at her home in Erskine Manor on Wednesday, May 23, 2012. We're still hashing out details for the fall/winter Sustainer art activity. Last year's wreath making class at Fernwood was fabulously successful and fun and is an option. Watch League Lore for more details. Please keep me updated on what's happening in your world. Feel free to send me information at sguibert@nd.edu. Photos are always welcome as long as we have space. I'm also open to suggestions for other types of information you're interested in reading in this section or ways you think we could improve it. Thanks so much!

Thank you to the following Sustainers for serving

in the following capacities for the 2011-2012 League year: Mary Eme, Executive Sustainer Advisor to the Board Peggy King, Sustainer Committee Chair Chris Buczynski, Future Planning Sustainer Advisor Kathy Dvorak, Community Research Sustainer Advisor Laura Flynn, New Member Sustainer Advisor Jacque Guyer, Thrift Shop Co-Chair & Chefs' Showcase Co-Chair Bonnie Hay, Done in a Day Sustainer Advisor Mary Matthews, Fund Development Sustainer Advisor Anne McGraw, Recruitment Sustainer Advisor Bobbi McMahon, New Member Sustainer Advisor Mo Miller, Holiday Ball Co-Chair Jane Murphy, Project Sustainer Advisor Pam Newman, Training Resource Sustainer Advisor Barbara Obenchain, New Member Sustainer Advisor

Nominating True/False Quiz

Answers from page 6 1. False - For most of the VP placements, you must have chaired a committee in the council to be qualified to serve on the Board. JLSB recognizes that members today bring a lot of volunteer experience with them and very often do not need a long history of League involvement before they are ready to serve as leaders. Talk to your Placement Advisor to make a volunteer plan or to see if you are already qualified! 2. True - Gaining the confidence, trust and respect of your peers through the slating and election process is an honor! Board members are exposed to high level topics and decision making that increase a members knowledge and impact for years to come. 3. False - Board meetings are like any member's commit ment to a committee. Full Council meetings have been scaled back significantly this year so there aren't an inordinate amount of extra time commitments to serve on the Board. Very often, the more involved a member becomes, the more time she willingly gives, although not required to do it. Each member brings her own abilities and time availability to her commitment. 4. True - Many JLSB leaders go on to serve in meaningful capacities for other nonprofit agencies which expand the individual member's capacity and League's reach in the community. Board service is particularly appealing to members who are motivated by and enjoy the development and success of other members. 5. False - The relationships gained by serving on the Board can last a lifetime! The time is never 'right' to expand your horizons and develop your potential by taking on a meaningful commitment. Women who are committed to lifelong learning and enjoy overcoming challenges with success say "yes" to this amazing opportunity!

. . . improving the community through the effective action and s leadership of trained volunteers s
1) Play Conductor: This volunteer position serves as the support person for The Brain Train staff. You will work one-on-one with families entering the Brain Development/Parenting Program. This position will afford you the opportunity to monitor and connect with families, while teaching them the importance of play. 2) Administrative Volunteer: This position will be extremely helpful behind the scenes to The Brain Train staff by helping with tasks such as data entry, filing and assembling take home care packages for the families.

Brain Train Update

by Becky Beckman (A), Project Chair f you missed the September General Meeting and would like more information on this years' project, The Brain Train, we have details!

3) Set up/Clean Up and Organization: Everyone like a clean room, right? This volunteer position will help The Brain Train staff set up for client appointments, organize, clean and put away toys at the end of the day, and assist with the purchasing and maintenance of the items in the play areas. 4) Volunteer Recruiting: By learning all of the volunteer opportunities you can now help The Brain Train staff recruit new volunteers. You will be asked to partici pate in volunteer training and help to mentor new volunteers. If recruiting is more appealing to you, The Brain Train staff will provide you with the tools to make phone calls to potential volunteers and organizations to gage interest in the program. One on the most exciting parts about volunteering at The Brain Train is that you do not have to choose just one volunteer position. You may want to start out behind the scenes and eventually become a Play Conductor and work directly with the families. The Brain Train is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in hearing more about these volunteer opportunities or to sign up please contact Becky Beckman at becky.beckman@collegefootball.org or 419.265.1717. **JLSB and the Project Committee would like to give Beth Doster a special Thank You for serving as our representative on the Family & Children's Center Counseling and Development Services/Brain Train Board.

Laying the tracks for healthy brain development for infants and young children through play!!
Learning starts at infancy, long before formal education begins. Success or failure from ages birth to five lays the foundation for success or failure in school and further in life. Unfortunately, many low-income children are behind their peers in cognitive and language development due to the difficulty of their parents in creating a nurturing environment for them. Consequently, these children will have a higher percentage of developmental delays. The Family & Children's Center Counseling and Development Services has created The Brain Train, a cutting edge new program that focuses on the importance of parent education and cognitive health to promote school readiness and the general well being of children who may be at risk for developmental delays from ages birth to five. The Brain Train will provide families with the knowledge and skills to enhance their infant or small child's healthy growth and development. Through the use of trained Play Conductors, families will play together and learn positive ways to interact using the different activities. The new facility has three rooms designed to meet the needs of children ages birth to 12 months, ages 12 months to 3 years and ages 3 to 5 years. The Brain Train Volunteer Opportunities: The Brain Train and JLSB have developed a wide range of volunteer opportunities so that everyone can participate at their own comfort level, and you can be very hands-on or behind the scenes, whichever you prefer!

Community Advisory Board

by Lori Huddleston (A), Community Vice President

As this year's Community Vice President, it is my privilege

to work with Junior League's Community Advisory Board (CAB). The Community Advisory Board meets four times throughout the League year, and our first meeting was held on August 24 at the May House. We not only had a wonderful turnout but a very productive discussion on Junior League's marketing plans for the future. For many of you who are new to our organization, you may wonder who the members of our Community Advisory Board are. JLSBs Community Advisory Board members are individuals who live, work or serve in our community, have the expertise and skills to assist our League and serve as advisors to the League to link it with the community. CAB members have a proven track record of sharing the League's values, goals and objectives. Our advisors include representatives from the education, communication, nonprofit, legal, health services and financial industries as well as sustainers from our own League. As advisors, our CAB members can counsel and assist on issues, projects and activities facilitating the League's mission, goals and specific needs. These people become a bridge to a wider constituency. Bringing an outside voice to League deliberations expands the League point of view and allows for an external opinion to be heard. It is with great appreciation that I would like to announce the members of this years Community Advisory Board:

1) Early Childhood Development (including Health and Wellness), 2) GED Issues, 3) Parental Involvement in Education, 4) Computer Literacy, 5) Primary Literacy, 6) Career Education and 7) Dropout Rates. After selecting "Early Childhood Development" as our Focus, our membership worked to educate ourselves on this subject through relevant Done in a Days, book clubs and trainings. As the Community Research Committee prepared to move forward to the next phase of this model by identifying and adopting an Impact Statement, we sought feedback from AJLI regarding our progress. It was at this time that we were reminded that the ultimate goal of this new process is to lead our membership through the essential exercise of continual narrowing and refining of the area in which we desire to make the most impact. Upon reflecting on this feedback, it has become apparent that while we initially identified "Early Childhood Development" as our Focus, this would actually serve us better as our Issue. By implementing this change, "Improving Education in our Community" will become our Topic. urrent Tasks: With our Issue more specifically defined, it is now the role of our membership to narrow our efforts even more by identifying a new Focus. The potential new Focus areas come from the list of seven that were identified by our membership after the community forum. The three contenders our membership found most related to "Early Childhood Development" are: 1) Early Childhood Health and Wellness, 2) Parental Involvement and 3) Primary Literacy. These were presented to the membership at the September General Membership Meeting at which time members had an opportunity to informally nominate the Focus area that most resonated with them. The Community Research Committee will compile member feedback along with current community data from various sources to identify our new, more specific and actionable Focus. uture Goals: Keeping in mind that issue-based community impact is bigger, deeper, longer-term and more enduring than a project-based focus, the Community Research Committee will begin the process of identifying an Impact Statement that narrows the scope of our efforts even more as we strive to align ourselves with the model presented by AJLI. The Impact Statement will serve as the broadest definition of the changes and results sought by the League's efforts as well to serve as a rally point for JLSB's efforts to infuse our Issue and Focus in all programming and fundraising efforts. Beyond those important roles, the Impact Statement will also set us on the right path as we identify the Strategies and Tactics that will be used to make JLSB's vision a reality. LEAGUE LORE

Issue-Based Community Impact: A Roadmap

by Amy Stewart-Brown (A), Community Research Chair ackground: The past several years have brought about a change in the way we, as JLSB, think about the long-term impact we hope to have on our community. As we think back to the first exercises associated with our new model, we remember a visit from The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) super-star trainer Vicki Clark, who helped us to identify our Issue "Improving Education in our Community." The next steps included a community forum with local education experts that led to the identification of our top seven potential focus areas including: www.jlsouthbend.org

hanks to the hard work of League members, the 81st Annual Thrift Shop sale was a success! Hundreds of shoppers turned out on a cold and rainy September day to search for bargain prices on items ranging from clothing to housewares to furniture. While the weather was quite dreary, sales were not. The net income exceeded the goal of $14,000 by over $6,000!

Association Board for Christ the King Catholic Grade School where she annually raised funds to support all athletic programs. She also spent six years volunteering for the Saint Josephs High School annual auction which raises funds for scholarships and education, including as chairperson for the pre-auction fundraiser. Pam was a committee member and consultant organizing a matchinggift campaign for the St. Pius Catholic School Capital Campaign. The campaign raised over $500,000. She also raised $40,000 for the United Health Services' "Bad Pants Golf Outing" while serving on their Board of Directors. Pam volunteered many hours at The Logan Center. She was volunteer chair for the Great Logan Nose-On in 1992 and the event raised $45,000. Her association with Logan Center began as a volunteer but eventually evolved into a staff position as the Director of Development. Pam also started Junior League's involvement with the annual Logan Christmas Party. Pam and her husband, David, are legal guardians for an adult Logan client, who has no family support system. They give continuous financial and emotional support so that this individual can live his life to the fullest. Pam has taken what she has learned throughout her years of fundraising and has spent six years on the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) where she has planned bi-monthly training opportunities for the development professionals throughout St. Joseph County. In addition to her tireless devotion to fundraising, Pam continues to stay involved through volunteering throughout the community. We are honored to have Pam as a continuing member of The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. and we congratulate her as the 2011 Mary Lou Schwartz Award recipient.

Mary Lou Schwartz Recipient Announcement

by Cassidy Troeger (A), Fundraising Vice President

The Mary Lou Schwartz Award is a prestigious award given

by The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. to a woman who has been actively involved in fundraising within our community. Much like Mary Lou Schwartz, the recipient must possess great skills in addition to her fundraising throughout the community. The Mary Lou Schwartz Award was originated in 2003 in conjunction with Holiday Ball as this is the event Mary Lou truly put her mark on! We are happy to announce that Pam Jarrett is the recipient of this year's Mary Lou Schwartz Award. Pam is a sustaining member of The Junior League of South Bend, Inc. She has served in various capacities within League including as a member of the Board of Directors, Thrift Shop department chair and as both a member and treasurer of the Nutbread & Nostalgia Cookbook Committee. She has taken the skills that she learned through Junior League and has used them throughout the community in various capacities. Currently, Pam Jarrett serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Northern Indiana affiliate of Susan G. Komen and is a two year member of their Board of Directors. She served as volunteer chair for the 2010 Race recruiting over 150 volunteers. In 2011, she again served as volunteer chair and sponsor chair and raised almost $90,000 in event sponsorships. Both races raised a combined total of over $250,000. Pam has also served on the Board of Directors for Hospice St. Joseph, an international relief organization. She initiated an annual fund campaign for them and helped raise about $50,000 for earthquake relief, directly impacting the people of Christ Roi, a neighborhood of Port Au Prince, Haiti. Through Hospice St. Joseph, she has also taken three volunteer service trips to Haiti to volunteer at a mother and child clinic concentrating on educating children and handling medical and dental needs for both mothers and children. We are excited to be challenged to raise additional funding to support our organizations operating expenses through the interest earned on contributions to JLSBs Endowment. Our five-year goal is growing the Endowment to cover forty percent of JLSBs operating costs. As our year progresses, we will provide more details on how we hope to raise the necessary funds this year and in the future as well as educate the general membership on different sources of the Endowment such as planned giving. The Endowment Committee will also assess the sources and success of each appeal as well as look into additional ways that we could grow our Endowment. We have confidence that the members will step up with their generous donations. Be on the lookout for your opportunity to make your gift. If every member donated to the Endowment, they would only have to donate $22, in order to hit our goal of $10,000. Every little bit counts and you can make a difference!
