Rossland Mountain Film Festival is presented by the mem-
bers of the Nelson and District Credit Union from Tursday,
November 24 to Sunday, November 27.
With a slight change in the U-19 format this year, the Ross-

Kootenay Association for Science and Technology to bring

a Columbia Basin Trust water-stewardship initiative.
Kyra and the rest of the students did water quality test-
ing and toured local water treatment facilities as part of
the day-long feld trip. Know Your Watershed includes
two classroom sessions and a feld trip that helps teach
local students where their water comes from, how it is
used in their community and where it goes afer it is used.
Students from across the Columbia Basin have been tak-

Te Hospital!
Weve been celebrating our hospitals recent ER expan-
sion and the addition of the CT scanner. Another key piece
of the health services at KLH is made up of the many sur-
geries that are performed in Nelson by local and visiting
specialists. Tese services include a variety of laparoscopic
procedures, hysterectomies, cataract surgeries, caesarean
sections, tubal ligations, carpal tunnel releases, hernia re-
pairs, and so much more.
Our goal this year
is to raise funds for
equipment to sup-
port the continua-
tion of these surger-
ies at KLH. Tese
surgical services
beneft not only the
citizens of Nelson,
but a wider popula-
tion of 33,000 in-
cluding Kaslo, Sal-
mo and the Slocan
Valley.
In keeping with our
goal of supporting
operating room pro-
cedures, the focus of
this years Light Up
the Hospital! cam-
paign is funding the
purchase of an Insuf-
fator with camera
system and 3 high
defnition monitors.
Tis is state of the
art high defnition
equipment used in all
laparoscopic proced-
ures. Patients under-
going these proced-
ures, which involve
much smaller inci-
sions than traditional
surgeries, experience
less post-operative
pain, reduced hospi-
tal stays and shorter
recovery time.

Te Columbia River Treaty
Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) is hosting an informa-
tion session about the Columbia River Treaty (CRT) in
Nelson on Monday, November 14 at the Nelson District
Rod and Gun Club, 801 Railway Street. Open House is
from 2 pm to 7 pm, free dinner from 6 pm to 7 pm,
presentation from 7 pm to 9 pm. Tis session is hosted in
partnership with local governments and the CRT Local
Governments Committee.
Te information session will help people who live
in the Canadian portion of the Columbia Basin bet-
ter understand what the CRT is, how it works and what
considerations exist for the future, said Neil Muth, CB
President and CEO.
Te CRT is an international agreement between Canada
and the United States to coordinate food control and opti-
mize hydroelectric power generation on both sides of the
border. Under the 1964 treaty, three dams were constructed
in Canada, including Mica, Duncan and Hugh Keenleyside.
A fourth dam, Libby, was constructed in Montana. Its res-
ervoir, the Koocanusa, extends 67 kilometres into Canada.

Support Group
When someone is diagnosed with a mental illness, their
familys dynamics change drastically. When the frst signs of
severe mental illness raises its ugly head, the focus is on the
family member exhibiting them. He or she may get med-
ical attention and then be returned to the familys care...a
family with no knowledge or experience as caregivers to
the mentally ill. Where can family members, who feel so
alone, receive support? We cannot always look to the gov-
ernment to meet our needs. We must try to help ourselves
whenever possible. In addition to the support, it is surpris-
ing what we can learn about how to cope from the lifelong
experience of families who have been there and done that
many times over. Peoples reactions to behaviours they do
not understand, generate fear, avoidance, denial, ignorance,
frustration and the stigma that surrounds mental illness.
Mental illnesses are not about bad parenting or unhappy
marriages, they are neurobiological disorders that afect the
brain. If you are family with a member who has a mental
illness, come and join us on Tursday, November 10 at the
Clubhouse (818 Vernon Street) in Nelson at 7 pm. We meet
informally every second Tursday of each month.

In regards to her lovely coat, Kita needs a
deep brushing regularly. This will ensure
her fur stays silky and matt free. Make her
regular grooming something positive for
her, like giving her treats as you brush so
she knows that it is a good thing. She has
been brushed while here at the shelter
and we feel she just needs someone to
take the time with her, to make her more
used to the brush and being groomed.
Kita is a great girl who has a lot of stored
up energy. But dont let her age fool you,
I am sure she could keep up with you
and your family. Perhaps you have a large
fenced yard for her to run in? She would
love that. Even just getting to go for walks
a couple times a day. Kita just has a lot of
energy, and once she is a little tired out,
she listens very well.
Kita needs a new forever home that has

If you are looking for a beautiful older
dog, you are in luck.
Kita is an 8 year old tri colour spayed
female collie husky mix. She had lived
with her previous owners her whole life,
but when the family moved to their new
home, they found that they didnt have
any more time for her and thought it best
to surrender her to the BCSPCA.
Since the new home couldnt
accommodate Kita, she had to live in the
basement for the last year; so needless to
say, her energy levels can be quite high at
times for a dog her age.
So far, Kita has shown us here at the
shelter that she is social and intelligent.
She does pull a little on the leash at the
start of her walk, but we fnd once she
gets those frst few moments jitters out,
she enjoys being on the leash.
She appears to be a dominant female, so
a household with no dogs would be best,
or your current dog should be submissive.
All animals need to get used to each
other, but some are dominant right from
the get go.

New Public Trail
Te Kootenay Columbia Trails Society is pleased to an-
nounce the opening of a new public use trail, located in
East Trail, following the of cial ceremony on Monday,
September 17.
Te new Blufs Trail is a 2.7 km loop for hiking and bik-
ing. Tis new trail extends of the long-standing Miral
Heights and associated Ravens Rock trails to the view-
point (with fagpole) above the Hospital. Te new Blufs
Trail goes further up the hillside to a higher viewpoint
(with fagpole) above Sunningdale..
Te new trail is beautifully constructed with many rock
walls as it weaves through rugged terrain with open for-
ests. Tis month, the brilliant yellow of the poplar leaves
is an added bonus. Views are stunning. Tey range from
near the US border to halfway to Castlegar and up from
the river and Sunningdale past Trail, Teck Operations,
Warfeld, and ski runs on Granite Mountain to the Record
Ridge skyline.
Tis new trail, and the Antennae Trail in Montrose,
compliment the higher elevation trails in the regional net-
work around Rossland because these trails have open for-
ests, great views and are able to be used later in the fall and
accessed earlier in the spring. Funding for any new trail is

Te City of Trail and Beaver Valley provided seed money
by allocating some Columbia Basin Trust Community
Initiatives funds last spring. Tese funds were suf cient
to employ a 3-person crew to construct half of the trail
during the month of July. Afer a break during the heat
of August matching funds were generously provided by
Teck Trail Operations, and participants in the Waneta Ex-
pansion Project: Emil Anderson, Redpath/FKCI Waneta
Tunellers, SNC-Lavalin and Columbia Power Corpora-
tion. Tese funds enabled the crew to return during Sep-
tember and complete the construction of the trail. Fur-
ther, never to be forgotten is the essential support of the
private landowners and the BC Government allowing the
trail to be located on combination of private and Crown
Land.
Te Blufs Trail Loop can be accessed from Miral
Heights trail. Tis can be reached in 20 to 30 minutes
of hiking, either from the Miral Heights trailhead (with
sign), or from the hairpin turn between the high school
and hospital (trailhead with sign).
Te Trails Society is pleased to have been part of this
project. We believe the Blufs Trail will become highly
valued by residents of Trail and region. We urge everyone
to try it out; it is pretty special. Te grades are easy and the
distance is moderate about 1 hour round trip to the bot-
tom of the Bluf Trail and another 1 hour to hike around
the Bluf Trail loop past the high viewpoint. A wonderful
family outing!
Programs Support
Eating Local Year-Round
Interior Health residents are getting the message
locally grown food is better for your health, the environ-
ment and the local economy. Attendance is up at farmers
markets, gardens are becoming more popular and people
are paying attention to where their food is grown. Now
that winter is on the way, can we still eat locally? With as-
sistance from Interior Healths Community Food Action
Initiative (CFAI), the answer is yes. Many communities
are developing innovative ways to help residents store and
preserve the harvest for year-round enjoyment.
Food preservation skills were once absolutely neces-
sary in order to ensure food was available all year long,
said Rose Sonef, Community Nutritionist with Interior
Healths Food Security and Community Nutrition pro-
gram. CFAI funds are helping resurrect these lost and
forgotten skills.
One of the barriers to food preservation can be the
cost of the equipment. In order to overcome this hurdle
Kootenay Local Agricultural Society (KLAS), with assist-
ance from CFAI, has purchased four commercial-sized
food dehydrators. Te dehydrators will be included in the
Societys tool library, which is available for residents of
Castlegar, Nelson, Kaslo, New Denver and Nakusp, and
accessible for a small fee of $8/day.
Te Kaslo Food Hub used these dehydrators to pro-
duce value added products and raise funds for their pro-
grams, said Nette Lack, Administrator, Kootenay Local
Agricultural Society. Produce donations provided over
the summer from a local distributor were used to make
products such as garlic zucchini chips and apple rings
which were then sold as a fundraiser. Tese products are
economically viable, healthy and require little electricity
for storage. Te dehydrated food also helped educate the
public on food preservation.
Te Cranbrook Food Action Committee launched Te
Harvest Connection Project, which included producing
the East Kootenay Local Food Guide to help identify lo-
cal food sources and Learn to Preserve Food workshops
designed to de-mystify food preservation for non-proft
groups.
Gathering together to work with food in this way
has been as much about community as it is about skill
development, says Shannon Grey Duncan, Project Co-
ordinator. Each group has experienced the sense of em-
powerment that comes from taking control of what we eat
and how we prepare it. Support for local food is defnitely
growing and new producers are starting up all the time.
Its very exciting!
Te Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrooks Community
Apple Capture Project was designed to increase the use
of local fruit and showed community members how to
maximize the yield of their fruit producing trees. CFAI
funds enabled the group to purchase an apple press,
grinder, pruning and picking equipment, to develop a
website and to start an adopt a tree program aimed at
keeping local fruit trees healthy.
We have been amazed at the amount of interest the
project has generated, said Helen Sander, Wildsight Pro-
gram Manager. We started with one pruning workshop
and ended up flling a second session.
Te Community Food Action Initiative is a community
grant program that encourages communities to use novel
approaches to overcome their unique barriers to access-
ing healthy, safe and nutritious foods.

Te Nelson Curling Centre
Afordable Programs
Te Capital One Rocks and Rings Program was intro-
duced to Nelson elementary schools last year with in-
structors visiting schools to ofer this fun and exciting
of-ice introductory experience with curling. School visits
will continue this year where requested.
Another exciting new program is the Canadian 2 for 1
Youth League. It will be ofered to youth ages 12 and up
on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm at the very afordable
rate of $60 +HST (for non-members) including the use
of equipment. Tis league will initially involve games and
on-ice instructions while working itself into scheduled
games throughout the season. Registration is on Saturday,
October 29th, however, it will remain open throughout
the year for new and interested youth. Fun events will also
occur throughout the season.
Te Junior Program has been in existence for a number
of years and continues to be a popular event for young
people. Tis program is held afer school on Mondays and
Tursdays from 4 pm to 5:30 pm and is open to new regis-
trants throughout the year. Fee is $65 +HST.
A one day camp will be held on Saturday, December
10 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Optimist International and the
Nelson Curling Centre will be hosting this development
camp for children ages 8 to 12. Lunch and snacks will be
provided. Fee is $10 plus HST

assist with funding for these programs.

Tis new trail, and the Antennae Trail in Montrose, com-
pliment the higher elevation trails in the regional network
around Rossland because these trails have open forests, great
views and are able to be used later in the fall and accessed earli-
er in the spring. Funding for any new trail is key to its creation.
Te City of Trail and Beaver Valley provided seed money by
allocating some Columbia Basin Trust Community Initia-
tives funds last spring. Tese funds were suf cient to employ a
3-person crew to construct half of the trail during the month
of July. Afer a break during the heat of August matching funds
were generously provided by Teck Trail Operations, and par-
ticipants in the Waneta Expansion Project: Emil Anderson,
Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunellers, SNC-Lavalin and Columbia
Power Corporation. Tese funds enabled the crew to return
during September and complete the construction of the trail.
Further, never to be forgotten is the essential support of the
private landowners and the BC Government allowing the trail
to be located on combination of private and Crown Land.
Te Blufs Trail Loop can be accessed from Miral Heights
trail. Tis can be reached in 20 to 30 minutes of hiking, either
from the Miral Heights trailhead (with sign), or from the hair-
pin turn between the high school and hospital (trailhead with
sign).
Te Trails Society is pleased to have been part of this pro-
ject. We believe the Blufs Trail will become highly valued by
residents of Trail and region. We urge everyone to try it out; it
is pretty special. Te grades are easy and the distance is moder-
ate about 1 hour round trip to the bottom of the Bluf Trail
and another 1 hour to hike around the Bluf Trail loop past the
high viewpoint. A wonderful family outing!
