OVERVIEW
COURSE DESCRIPTION Semester 1:
In United States History we began with a brief survey of European exploration and conquest of the New World. We explored Puritanism, the New England Colonies and the development of the plantation system in the South. We discussed the social and economic developments that lead to the American Revolution. We also completed a study of the U.S. Constitution and the basic principles of American government. At the end of the term we discussed the growth and change that lead to the Civil War. Students made presentations, participated in role-play simulations, engaged in problem solving sessions, and read both primary and secondary historical sources. Special emphasis was placed on enhancing students skills in reading writing and analyzing.

ASSESSMENT
Classroom Behavior Students are evaluated daily on their punctuality, preparation and participation. Listening skills are emphasized through accountability for information learned in class.

Use of reading and dictionary to find definitions Techniques for vocabulary retention- flashcard, drawing, role play, discussion

Homework assignments are assessed for neatness, completeness, quality and creativity.

Writing are developed though in class writing, short answer test and quizzes and essay writing, both as assigned papers and for tests. Reading

Encourage reading aloud in class and on tapes. Discuss content to increase understanding. Emphasis and reinforce critical reading and comprehension. Homework usually involved reading. Listening and Note Taking: accountability for class lecture.

Vocabulary Building Skills Homework requiring students to provide definitions and complete a variety of activities using the words is assed according to normal homework completion criteria. Students are given matching quizzes on vocabulary and are also given quizzes and test which required them not only to define terms but to recognize them in order to answer more complex questions

Writing Skills

Students writing skills are assessed on the paragraph answers and short essays they complete on tests and quizzes. Proper form is emphasized. Rubrics are used for evaluation. Reading Reading skills are asses through quizzes and tests, reading out loud, read into a tape for homework Listening and note taking Student notes are checked occasionally. Open notes quizzes are used and some test are based solely on class content and notes. Content Quizzes and Tests based on reading and class material.

Generally short answer or essay. Some objective multiple choice or matching.

Semester 2:

This semester we began with a focus on the role of the United States in international politics. We discussed U.S. imperialist ventures, like the annexation of Hawaii, Spanish American War and the Filipino Insurrection. We studied World War I, its origins in Europe, U.S. involvement, the Home Front and subsequent political, social and economic effects on the U.S. We examined the boom and bust of the Twenties and Thirties, World War II and the Cold War. We debated the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan and discussed the issues of nuclear testing. We then engaged in a critical analysis of the history of Africans in America, beginning with the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s and ending with a discussion of current trends in race relations in America. We studied W.W. I the years between the Wars, W.W.II and the Cold War. Student groups then took turns teaching the class about topics like the Revival of Feminism, Hispanic, the Counterculture and the Reagan Revolution. At the end of the term we surveyed the 80s and 90s and discussed international role of the U.S. today.
