UNIT-III 5.

From fundamentals, derive an expression for Eulers critical load for a column with one end fixed and other end free. State the assumptions made in the derivation OR 6. A T-section having web 150 mm x 20 mm and flange 100 mm x 20 mm is used as a strut of 4 m long with both ends hinged. Calculate the crippling load, if Youngs modulus for the material is 200 GPa. UNIT-IV 7. A thin seamless spherical shell of 0.8 m internal diameter and 4 mm thickness is filled with fluid pressure until its volume increases by 50 cm3. Determine the fluid pressure, if Youngs modulus is 200 GPa and Poissons ratio is 0.3 for the shell material. OR 8. A thick cylindrical shell of 100 mm internal diameter is to withstand and internal pressure of 20 MPa. If the maximum permissible tensile and shear stresses are 60 MPa and 50 MPa respectively, determine the metal thickness necessary for the shell UNIT-V 9. From fundamentals, derive the governing expression for simple bending of curved bars with small initial curvature OR 10. A curved beam, circular in section is subjected to pure bending of 600 Nm. The beam has diameter 40 mm and is curved in a plane parallel to the depth. The mean radius of curvature is 40 mm. Find the position of the neutral axis, and the ratio of maximum stress to minimum stress. Sketch the bending stress distribution across the section

V SEMESTER MECHANICS OF SOLIDS-II
(Effective from the admitted batch 200809)

Time: 3 Hours Max.Marks: 60 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Instructions: Each Unit carries 12 marks. Answer all units choosing one question from each unit. All parts of the unit must be answered in one place only. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks allotted. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------

UNIT-I 1. A beam fixed at both ends with span L is subjected to a triangular load having maximum intensity w/unit length at mid-span and zero at ends. From fundamentals, derive the expressions for the fixing moment at each end and the deflection at mid-span. 12 OR 2. A fixed beam AB of length 3 m carries a point load of 45 kN at a distance of 2 m from A. If the flexural rigidity of the beam is 1 x 104 kNm2, determine: (a) Fixed end moments at A and B; (b) Deflection under the load; (c) Maximum deflection; and (d) Position of maximum deflection UNIT-II 3. From fundamentals, derive an expression for Clapeyrons theorem of three moments OR 4. A continuous beam ABC consists of two consecutive spans AB and BC of length 8 m and 6 m respectively. The end A is fixed and the end C is simply supported. The beam carries a u. d. l. of 1 kN/m throughout its length. Determine the support moments and reactions. Sketch the SFD and BMD 12
