Action Step
Focused Tutorials: A two point attack will be implemented to increase grades 9-10 student achievement. The first phase involves mandatory tutorials for students with low math achievement scores from the 2010-11 school year. This phase will target current grade 9 and 10 students. Mandatory tutorials are scheduled for 3:30 to 5 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays and 6:50 a.m. on Tuesdays. Also, this will involve online tutorial as well. The second part of tutorials will involve our Focused Extended Learning Initiative. Students failing at 3-6-9 week report periods will be required to attend this program that is operated by faculty, facilitators and administrators. This is a mandatory program for failing students.

Progress Monitoring for Focus TutorialsOur primary focus is to progress monitor for 10th grade math students as that is our AYP. Math teachers will use Unit Assessments and released TAKS tests (provided by T. Garvey) to monitor student progress on objectives. Each student will have a Progress Monitoring Sheet that he will keep in his note book. This will enable a student

to track his progress on each objective. S. Skruch will check with Garvey regarding a blueprint for Unit Assessments to easily identify which questions relates to which objective. Unit Assessment data will be pulled from Edugence to compare how 10th grade classes as a whole performed on each objective and to identify areas needing to be re-taught through spiraling. (Completed in PD Groups and after school meetings). Administrators will identify 10th grade Bubble Students and students who failed TAKS last year for each respective math teacher. L. Cheatham and S. Skruch will meet with teachers of identified students every three weeks to follow up on their academic progress. Specifically, the Administrative Team at Smith will closely monitor student grade, student progress on Unit Assessments, student progress on homework/daily work (number of zeroes) in grade book; student attendance at tutorials, and parent contacts. Students who fail at the 3-6-9 work week period will be required to attend 70 minutes of tutorials with his/her math teacher. During that time each teacher will provide a focused re-teach/tutorial regarding material needing attention; re-teach weak objectives as identified in Edugence, unit assessments, etc. L. De Lemos will organize lesson plans from the Americas Choice Accelerated Curriculum, Math Navigator or Going the Distance curriculum. Lessons will be placed on S drive for teachers to use as options for their focused tutorial time.

If questioning strategies are uniformly implemented to probe student learning it will take student thought from the unclear to the clear, from unreasoned to the reasoned, from implicit to explicit, from the unexamined to the examined, from the inconsistent to the consistent, from the unarticulated to the articulatedthe student achievement will increase. Teachers will focus on Socratic Questioning strategies that include: Questions of clarification; Questions that probe implication and Questions that probe reasons and evidence.
