Car Driving Manoeuvres Explained

A minimum of one of the three manoeuvres should be executed at some point during your driving Excellent Detail test (the examiner can ask for more than one). The following manoeuvre details are in relation to your Glencor driving instructor's car. If using a dierent car then some details i.e. references, might require slight altering.

Turn In The Road Explained

Before starting the manoeuvre, you will be parked at the side of the road, then asked to execute the turn in the road.

1st Pt At the start, look around as you would when moving o. If the road is clear or there are no other road users nearby who are attempting to pass you, then move o very slowly and immediately steer full lock right, but once you're car is moving give another look to the right for other road users. If it is safe, continue across the road and if you have enough space (and the full lock steering is complete) move a little brisker but slowing down as you

approach the kerb and stopping your car so that the front of your car does not overhang the kerb but is approx 6 inch short of the kerb. You can now hold the car using either your foot brake or your parking brake, while you change into reverse gear.

Darren Fifer of Springside I recommend Glencor Driving School if you want a pass. Dave is a good driving instructor and makes you feel relaxed when you're driving and gives you the condence to pass.

2nd Pt Before reversing look right along the road, left along the road, then out the rear window. If the road is clear or there are no other road users nearby, move o very slowly and immediately steer full lock left while still looking out the back window, but once you're car is moving give another look to the right for other road users then out the back window again. If it is safe, continue across the road and if you have enough space (and the full lock steering is complete) move a little brisker. When half way across the road, look over your right shoulder (or in your right door mirror) so as to judge stopping with the rear of your car not overhang the kerb but approx 6 inch short of the kerb. You can now hold the car using either your foot brake or your parking brake, while you change into 1st gear.

3rd Pt Before moving o look left along the road then right along the road for other road users. If it is safe or there are no other road users nearby who are attempting to pass you, then move o slowly and immediately steer suciently to the right so as to end up on the left side of the road and continue on your journey. The turn in the road does not always need to be three points. This is dependent on the width of the road, the vehicle used, etc. Every time you are steering, keep the car very slow but the steering brisk.

On busy roads make more frequent observations all round for other road users. If, at any of the points, other road users are nearby or are approaching so as to pass you then you must wait and allow them to pass. If they wait, then you must continue with the manoeuvre. At the 1st & 2nd pts you must go all the way across to approx 6 inch from the kerb. This will allow other road users to pass by, if they want to, while you are changing gear and preparing to move again. Trisha Brown of Kilmarnock Thanks to David I feel condent driving. The following procedure can be used for most cars but the references given herein are for your Glencor driving instructor's car. These references might need to be altered if using another car. Before starting the manoeuvre, you will be parked at the side of the road before the parked vehicle that you will use to reverse in behind. After moving o safely to drive towards the start position, look in your rear view mirror. If there is a vehicle behind you then indicate left but continue into position making sure to stop at the 1st reference. You should be approx 2 foot out from the parked car. Steering: - every time you are going to steer, keep your car moving very slowly but your steering very brisk. When you have completed the steering, and only if you have enough space, move your car a little brisker but slow down as you reach the next reference point for steering. Observations: - Look from right shoulder blind spot, right mirror, the road in front, then out the back window. If it is safe, then start reversing, while still looking out the back window. Note: You must not continue if other road users are going to be passing you. If they wait then you must continue. Immediately when the car starts to move, steer one revolution to the left. (Shown in the next diagram).

Observations: - Once you have completed steering one revolution to the left look around (as above). If it is safe, then continue reversing to the 2nd reference (Shown in the next diagram), while mainly looking out the back window but checking now and then for the next reference. Note: You must not continue if other road users are going to be passing you. If they wait then you must continue. Note: In very busy streets you might have to look several times all round until you reach the next reference.

On reaching the 2nd reference, steer one revolution to the right, your wheels will now be straight but the car is coming in towards the kerb. Observations: - You should now mainly look out the back window but look every now and then in the left door mirror for the 3rd reference. (Shown in the next diagram). Note: You now do not need to wait while other road users pass on your right side, because the front of your car is now not moving out into the trac.

As you reverse towards the kerb you should see, in your left door mirror, the kerb visually traveling down your car door handle. When the bottom of the kerb reaches the bottom of your car door handle, steer full lock to the right. Observations: - You should still mainly look out the back window but every now and then look forward to a) make sure that the front of your car is not going to hit the other car (this could happen if your steering is insucient or the references incorrect), and, b) gauge when your car is coming in to be parallel with the kerb. (Refer the next diagram).

As your car almost reaches parallel with the kerb, steer left to straighten up your car wheels (this will be approx one half turn and one full turn). By the time you have straightened your steering your car should be positioned as shown in the next diagram.

Your car should now be parallel with the kerb. Note: The car does not have to be parallel with the kerb but both the left wheels should be less than one foot from the kerb. Your car should also be within two car lengths of the vehicle in front, your car being one of the lengths i.e. one car length maximum (preferably less) between your front bumper and the nearest bumper of the vehicle you have reversed in behind.

Left Reverse Into A Junction Explained

Before starting the manoeuvre, you will be parked at the side of the road before the junction. After moving o safely to drive towards the start position, look in your main mirror to see if there is a vehicle behind you. If there is, then immediately on passing the centreline of the junction you are going to reverse into, indicate left but continue into position. You should be approx 1 foot out from the kerb and approx 2 car lengths beyond the junction.

At start - Look right blind spot, right mirror, ahead then out the back window. If it is safe, then follow the kerb to the corner while still looking out the back window. Note: If there are vehicles traveling towards you (on the other side of the road) from the front then make yourself aware of these vehicles as they might turn into the junction you are attempting to reverse into. You can continue reversing but if they are slowing down to turn into the junction then you should slow down and wait just as they approach the junction. Once they have turned in, you can continue reversing but before continuing look right blind spot, right mirror, ahead then out the back window for any other road users that you might need to wait for. At corner - Look right blind spot, right mirror, ahead then out the back window. If it is safe, then steer left to follow the corner into the junction while mainly looking out the back window but now and then looking in your left door mirror to conrm your position to the kerb. Note: due to the front of your vehicle moving out into the road when you start to steer you must not continue if there are vehicles passing you or pedestrians walking around your vehicle. When parallel with new road - Steer briskly right to straighten your front wheels, and then follow the kerb back approx 4 car lengths. Remember, you must be mainly looking out the back window and only glancing in your left door mirror every now and then to check your position with the kerb. While on the corner section, look right blind spot, right mirror, and ahead more often if required e.g. a busy street, pedestrians nearby, other junctions nearby, etc. But again, remember to be looking mainly out the back window while reversing. At any time while reversing, if another vehicle approaches from behind then you must wait when they are nearby and until they pass you or turn away from you or wait for you to continue. If, on the corner, a vehicle approaches close from behind then you might have to pull forward into the main road to give them space to turn at the junction, then once they are clear start reversing in again. Remember to do your observations before pulling forward and before reversing again. Turn In The Road Top Parallel Park
