A tour of Bacalar Chico with KIAs Whale Sharks!

The first leg of the tour included a slow boat ride through the mangroves at the San Pedro Lagoon. This area is a no wake zone, which means that boats need to slow down and travel this channel as carefully as possible. While this discussion took place, the roar of a racing engine made all those present realize that the rules are being broken everyday. KIA hopes that education will reduce the number of people who are violating the laws of the environment. Taking the time to learn about our rich natural resources and the Bacalar Chico National Park, The San Pedro Sun joined the Kids in Action (KIA) once more, for a tour of the panoramic lagoon side of the island. Bird cayes, sand bars, mangroves, Mayan mounds and fossilized coral and rock were all part of the tour held on Thursday, July 17th, 2008. Belize Diving Adventures (BDA) generously donated a day trip for the

7-9-year-old group from KIA, the Whale Sharks. KIA is the collaboration between Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) and volunteers from many diver operations in San Pedro, and aided by the San Pedro Tourist Guide

Association, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve, and Green Reef Environmental Institute. The educational program aims to

The Whale Sharks headed out at 10 am and enjoyed a scenic route on the lagoon side of the island. Surrounded by the lush mangrove forests, it seemed that we were in a completely different world. Valentine, our guide and one of the organizers, took his time explaining the need for saving the bird cayes, and our boat captain Darryl made sure to stop for everyone to get a close-up of different sites of interest. A quick visit to the San Juan Visitor Center showcased several artifacts and models of the tools Mayan trade. Kids were excited to see the model of the canoe and seeds, as well as the full skeleton of a manatee. Other items, including a crocodile skull, several fossils, shells, and a beautiful model of the Bacalar Chico

area provided some more information regarding the area. A quick tour of the grounds provided for some breathtaking views, and interesting information regarding its history and previous inhabitants. The Whale Sharks enjoyed scampering and scaling the large tree trunks, enjoying the freedom and breeze afforded at such a beautiful, unspoiled spot. There was even a guava tree that was simply laden with fruit and begged to be picked an invitation that just couldnt be ignored! Afterwards, the boat ride led

The bird cayes are so called for their abundance of greenery and foliage that affords the birds nesting grounds and food sources. With development comes the loss of more and more of these habitats and the population of birds is dwindling.

(Above) A model of the Bacalar Chico area keeps kids enthralled as they point out the areas they have visited and how far they have come from San Pedro Town. Part of the lore about the location of San Juans Visitor Center is that a man by the name of Pinkerton used to inhabit the area, while using it as a smuggling post for arms and ammunition. He even had a small landing area for planes where drop-offs would ensue. He disappeared suddenly from the area and before the land could be sold to a private investor, the Government of Belize made it a reserve.

(Above) The Chac Balaam area seems like a simple mound of earth, but it was in fact a Mayan creation as well. Due to the lack of large rocks and boulders like in other places where the Mayan temples rise so magnificently, the Mayas improvised and used the earth to form their own smaller temples. While the detailing is not as intricate as those of other areas, it is still an amazing feat they accomplished, and as well should be preserved.

us out for a water tour of Chac Balaam, one of the Mayan Sites located in the Bacalar Chico area. A delicious lunch prepared by Enes at BDA followed this quick tour. Valentine described the plans for lunch, which included a swim stop by Rocky Point, followed by a trek down the shore to see the turtle nesting sites.

The water was warm and made for a relaxing swim, and once refreshed, those up for the walk started the trek, where the sight of all the fossilized coral and little eddies was unbelievable, and made for quite the photo opportunities! Upon closer inspection, what seemed like an ordiContinued on Page 7

The area by Rocky point where the nest was located is in close proximity to the main nesting ground a bit further south. nary hole in the sand turned out to be an old turtle nesting site, complete with remains of turtle eggshells. Part of the educational tour included an explanation of false nesting which usually means that the turtles are testing the shores and locating the best place to lay their eggs. The number one message however, is to protect, protect, protect the turtles and all other inhabitants of the reserve. Children who went on the tour enjoyed a great outing, and learned quite a bit about the protection of the environment and its surroundings. A special thanks to Belize Diving Adventures for their generosity, and kudos to KIA for enabling such a great day tour.

The joy of discovery can instill a sense of responsibility from a young age. KIA aims to do just that.

Doyles Delight Expedition June 22nd -27th 2008

Belize has only two areas reaching 1,100 meters. They are Victoria Peak and Doyles Delight. Victoria Peak, as its name suggests, is a peak, and as such, has a small area of over 1,000 meters elevation, is rocky with only small patches of thin soil. Doyles Delight area is rounded and has overall deep soils and has nearly 1.5 kilometers X 3 kilometers of over 1000 meters with in many places tall forest and massive trees. It is generally assumed that the highest peak in Belize is Victoria Peak but this peak is apparently slightly lower with only 1120 meters. Victoria Peak is, with clear weather, quite visible from the coast and shows a dramatic peak while Doyles Delight is located on a less visible location and is part of a more gently sloping range, not showing such a dramatic peak. Doyles Delight, with UTM coordinates 1,824,500 North and 281,600 East, lies on the Maya Mountain Divide, approximately 6.5 kilometers north of the eastern margin of Little Quartz Ridge, and 32 kilometers west-southwest of Richardson Peak. With its elevation of 1124 meters (3717 Feet), it is the highest point in Belize. The Maya Mountains, and specifically Doyles Delight, are considered geologically old for this part of Central America dating back at Participants in the June 2008 Doyles Delight Expedition: (Front) Douglas Leonardo (Guatemalan), Alfredo Sho lic. of Arthur Conan Doyles novel The Lost World. Towering palms and strangler figs, their trunks wrapped in a green shag of ferns and mosses, rise and converge in a leafy canopy that keeps the moist forest floor in perpetual dusk. The ridge is so remote that the British Armys jungle training unit, scientists and other researchers with multinational expedition drop most of the expedition members in by helicopter. Its not known if ever a Doyles Delight Expedition was ever successfully conducted from southern Belize (Toledo). This fantastic expedition took us six days deep in the Maya Mountains of Toledo and Cayo. There was no beer, no nothing, except what we carried on our back. This was another world a green, dripping,

dark tapestry where rivers disappear underground, howler monkeys roar from the treetops, thousand-year-old Mayan temples await discovery and ticks, chiggers and flesh-boring flies buzz and bite. For some of us those were the hardest six days of their life. The southern Maya Mountains are largely unexplored, and for good reason, the limestone topography is extremely rugged; overland travel requires carrying heavy packs over rough terrain with no established trails; daytime temperatures often reach 100 de-

grees, with humidity to match. The Southern Maya Mountains, found in Belize, are known to have the greatest diversity of flora and fauna found in the world. Biologists refer to this region as the green paradise of the rainforest in Belize. Six days on the move took us over the Maya Mountains Divide nearly 1,000 meters above sea level and the highest point of our journey. The going was torturous as the days progresses. Up and down, up and down...and so on, endlessly. Our rations dehydrated

The Gallery has a new home!

You might have noticed a change in the long time Hammocks and More Gift Shop located, next to Pepperoni Pizza. It is becoming colorful with a fresh new look, and that is because Linda Mikulich, owner of The Gallery has moved to her new digs. Together with

her partner, Jerry Lansing, they have applied their individual talents to make the store unique to San Pedro. The idea for the growth of the stores concept is in its infancy, but will keep developing over time.

beans, rice, pasta, oatmeal, cheese, bread and assorted high energy bars were nutritious enough, even tasty and kept us well on the trail. We reached the top (summit) of Doyles Delight on June 24th, 2008 (02:30 p.m.) The marker was overgrown with grass and shrub and was covered with a thin layer of soil. It was an amazing coincidence that we managed on June 24th, 2008 to unearth this small piece of history! The name Doyles Delight was first coined in 1989 (Matola, 1989). This name has meanwhile achieved widespread acceptance. This expedition to Doyles Delight would not have been possible without the major help and support of certain individuals. Thanks to Alfredo Sho, Emelino Cho and Eric Sho for their assistance during the expedition. Most notably, the Belize Defense Force, The Forestry Department Toledo must be commended for their valuable support and back-up service for emergency cases. Get ready for one of the worlds most punishing jungles. Your life will focus on the very basics: shelter, fire, water and food. Mousetrap
E-e-e-e-k! I ran downstairs to Melodys apartment when I heard her shrieking. As I burst through the door she was standing on a chair yelling, Mouse! Mouse! Mouse! E-e-e-e-e! Oh, for Gods sake, Melody, I said, as a little field mouse ran under the couch. Its just a little mouse. Theres no such thing as just a little mouse, she said. You have to get rid of it for me. Mice scare me. Get a trap and set it, I told her. When you catch it, call me and Ill throw the trap in the trash for you. A few days later I asked her, Did you ever set the trap for that mouse? Yes, she said. But that has to be the smartest mouse in the world. Every night he steals the cheese and the trap isnt sprung. Mice arent smart, I told her. Youre probably not putting the bait on the trap correctly. Whatever, she said. Anyway, Im out of cheese so Im going to have to use something else. The next day she came running upstairs and said, You have to come help me. I just heard the mousetrap go off under the couch. Ill take care of it. See, I told you mice arent that smart. By the way, what did you use for bait? I was out of cheese, she said, so I clipped a picture of a piece of cheese out of a magazine and used the picture for bait. I figured he probably wouldnt know the difference. Melody, you nitwit, I said. You cant trap a mouse with a picture of a piece of cheese. All I know is that the trap just went off under my couch, she said. Will you go check on it? I went downstairs and used a stick to pull the mousetrap from under the couch. Caught squarely in the trap was a picture of a mouse.
