Vietnam ready to talk with the EU to solve shoe dispute

(1)Vietnam is ready to talk with the European Union to find a solution to the shoe dumping dispute, a trade official
said Saturday in state media. (2)"Vietnam is ready to engage (with) the EC to find a solution acceptable to both sides
in this lawsuit," Dinh Thi My Loan, director of the trade ministry's department of competition control, was quoted as
saying in the official Vietnam News Agency. (3)EU trade chief Peter Mandelson announced Thursday a plan to
impose an anti-dumping duty on imported Chinese and Vietnamese shoes, saying the two nations were engaging in
"uncompetitive behavior". (4)To level the playing field, Mandelson called for a duty that would start in April at 4.0
percent and rise progressively to 19.4 percent for China and 16.8 percent for Vietnam.

INDONESIA, VIETNAM TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP

(1)Indonesia and Vietnam agreed here on Wednesday to support each other for nomination to membership in the UN
Security Council for the periods of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 respectively. (2)The agreement was reached at a
meeting between Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai
at the presidential palace. (3)"We agreed to increase cooperation in the UN forum including supporting Indonesia's
nomination as a non-permanent member for 2007-2008 and Vietnam's nomination for 2008-2009," Persident
Yudhoyono said at a joint press conference after the meeting. (4)The two leaders also agreed to boost cooperation in
the fields of economy, culture, tourism, fight against terrorism and transnational crimes as well as health including
bird flu handling. (5)The two countries also agreed to cooperate in the fields of fishery, agriculture, transportation
and energy.

Intel to invest $300m in Vietnam

(1)US computer chip firm Intel is to build a $300m (£172m) factory in Vietnam. (2)It will be based in the Saigon
Hi-Tech Park outside Ho Chi Minh City and will initially employ about 1,200 people. (3)It is believed to be the
biggest investment yet by a US company in Vietnam, and will raise the country's profile as a hi-tech business
location. (4)The plant will package chips into devices and test them before shipping them on. (5) Intel has similar
sites in China, Malaysia and the Philippines. (6) Intel chairman Craig Barrett said the factory was only the first stage
of his company's investment in the country. (7) The company already has a programme to provide computer training
to more than 30,000 Vietnamese teachers and is helping the government set up wireless computer access to rural
areas of the country. (8) The Vietnamese factory is part of a $6bn worldwide expansion programme Intel is rolling
out this year.

Communist debate grips Vietnam

(1)In Vietnam, February and March are supposed to be a good time for relaxation, after the exuberant Lunar New
Year. (2) But Vietnamese media have been absorbed since the end of January in a difficult and sensitive debate -
over the leadership of the Communist Party, or rather a lack of it. (3) Online news services and newspapers have run
discussion forums and printed articles containing questions which were impossible to ask a few years ago. (4) The
debate had become so heated that the party's newspaper has recently stepped in to try to prevent it from "running in
a dangerous and harmful way". (5) It all began early this year with a formal request by the party leadership for
people's views on its political platform in the run-up to its 10th National Congress, expected to take place in the next
few months.
