In two matches on Oct. 18 and Oct. 23, Radford University Field Hockey failed to score a goal as the squad fell in consecutive away games against the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons and the University of Richmond Spiders. The Highlanders came into their game against Wake Forest with a season record of 7-8 and a NorPac record of 2-3. The Demon Deacons came into the match with an overall record of 6-8.

Wake Forest wasted little time before getting to work and scored their first goal in the third minute. Wakes Emily Cummings was assisted by Lizzie Rae in a goal that whizzed by freshman goalkeeper Rebecca May. May would go on to give up five goals on the day, while also recording 11 saves. Wake went on to score a total of three goals in the first half, as Kari Walkley scored consecutive unassisted goals in the 15th and 35th minutes. By the end of the first half, Wake led RU by a score of 3-0, and outshot the Highs by a margin of 13-2. The second half didnt fare any better for the

Highs. Senior back Lynsey Daughtrey and senior forward Madonna Wadolowski recorded both of the two shots on goal the Highs had during the match. Rae and Adelaide Knott scored two more unassisted goals for Wake, one in the 43rd minute, and the other in the 68th minute. Finally, the match came to a close with Radford emerging on the wrong side of a 5-0 shutout. RU looked to split the weekend with a more favorable outcome in Richmond, where they took on the Spiders on Oct. 23. The Spiders

Radford University Womens Soccer captured the Big South regular season title on Oct. 25 after winning two out of three games in the past week. The Highs streak of consecutive shutouts ended on Oct. 20 when the High Point University Panthers beat the Highlanders 1-0 in an overtime thriller at Cupp Stadium. On Oct. 25, RU Field Hockey sophomore goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion was named Defensive Player of the Week in the NorPac East. Although it was her first NorPac award, many more are expected throughout her career. Encarnacion recorded seven saves on Oct. 23 against the University of Richmond Spiders to hold off U of Rs strong attack and lead the Highs to a 1-0 victory. The Highs next game is on the road on Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. against Davidson College. The game will be the last of the 2011 regular season.

Mens Soccer defeats Virginia Tech by score of 2-1

The Radford University Mens Soccer team continued their Big South conference play on the 22nd at Presbyterians Martin Stadium. Presbyterian midelder Jonny Mercado knocked in the rst goal of the game. Later, however, sophomore midelder Luis Grande equalized the game in the 81st minute. With just 2:48 left in the game, Mercado managed to net the game winner off a shot from outside the box assisted by Presbyterian defender Josh Carter. Despite a dominating performance by the Highs, Presbyterian managed to pull out the win. The Highs had 23 shots to Presbyterians 10. They also had 10 corners to the oppositions two. Radford goalkeeper Dane Watson recorded two saves to Presbyterian goalkeeper Ethan Watsons ve. Sophomore midelder Chel Ho Kim Park led the Highs with ve shots in the game. Also, Grande ended the game with two shots on goal, and four total. The Highlanders attempted to bounce back from the loss in a big rivalry game against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Highs put in the rst goal of the game in the 3rd minute. The goal was scored by Grande, assisted by senior midelder Brian Gwanzura and Kim Park. Grande explained that, It was a little bit of a relief for us to get the rst goal of the game, but that doesnt dene the game. Being a senior, this was Gwanzuras last game in the rivalry.
