PREFACE
This bibliographic research is the second update of Filipino philosophy: A critical
bibliography [1774-1992]. The first update—from 1993 to 1997—was finished in 1999.
Every five years, an update is conducted so that researchers will be abreast with the
current works directly or indirectly related to Filipino philosophy.
The explanations I made in the Preface of the 1993-1997 update still applies for
this update so I will just quote from there:

As earlier explained (Gripaldo 1996:3-4), Filipino philosophy has

three shades of meaning or, to put it differently, the study of Filipino
philosophy has three approaches. First, we have the anthropological
approach or the collective view of the Filipino weltanschauung about life,
time, ethics, God, etc. Leonardo Mercado (1974:1-244) based this
generally on linguistic considerations of three tribes: Tagalog, Visayan,
and Ilokano. Florentino Timbreza (1982:1-148) included riddles and
sayings while Florentino Hornedo and Vitaliano Gorospe focused on
myths and epics. The second approach is traditional, or that which has
been generally used in the discipline of philosophy. The compiler
sometimes label this as the “philosophical approach” in the sense that it is
the dominant approach used by historians of philosophy. When
philosophers and historians of philosophy speak, for instance, of “Greek
philosophy,” they enumerate individual Greek thinkers or philosophers.
The same is true with “British philosophy,” “French philosophy,” or
“German philosophy.” Consequently, properly speaking, when we speak
of “Filipino philosophy,” we should be able to enumerate Filipino thinkers
or philosophers. The compiler has specialized in this approach. The last is
the constitutional approach. This is problematic. It refers to works written
by Filipino authors but the subject matter is essentially non-Filipino or
foreign. Such works as Laureen Velasco’s “The social philosophy of
Plato” (1993-94) or Manuel Dy’s “The positive value of wu wei in the Tao
te ching” are such examples. These are Western and Chinese philosophies
all right, but there is an element of Filipino interpretation involved. As
such, each work can still be considered a Filipino philosophy by virtue of
its authorship, that is to say, the author is “Filipino” as defined legally in
the Philippine constitution. In this respect, naturalized Filipinos such as
John Schumacher, SJ will be considered as themselves Filipinos.
Moreover, any foreigner who writes on the subject matter that is
essentially Filipino [in character] will have to be included in this
bibliography. An example is Eugene Hessel who wrote The religious
thought of Jose Rizal (1983).

It is a matter of course that any research of this sort will have to allow a margin of
error which, to my mind, is plus or minus five percent (5%) in that given the meager bud-

iii
get and the limited time, and considering the concurrent work of the researcher as teacher
and administrator, and the graduate research assistant as a graduate student, it was
impossible to visit all the important schools and seminaries of the Philippine archipelago.
Occasionally provincial journals contain one or two entries in an issue. In the Philippines
there are only three journals which are essentially philosophy: Φιλοσοφια of the
Philippine National Philosophical Research Society, Karunungan of the Philippine
Academy of Philosophical Research, and the Phavisminda Journal of the Philosophical
Association of the Visayas and Mindanao. As to the other source of error, let me quote
again from the previous update as that observation also applies in this particular case:
“Another source of error may lie in the possibility that a few philosophy items in the
works I have examined may have been overlooked. But like the mother work, they will
be corrected if discovered in the future.”
As to the explanation of the term “critical bibliography,” I will repeat what I
quoted in the first update because this explanation still holds:

The term “critical bibliography” was first used in literature in order

to determine, among others, (a) the exactness of the date as to when an
extant manuscript was written, (b) the accuracy of its authorship, or (c)
both. No such thing was done in this present bibliographic work….[In this
particular update, 1998-2002, the compiler simply makes a tabulation.].
The compiler finds this more convenient than making an annotation of
each bibliographic entry. An annotation may not be critical, or analytical,
but may only be explanatory. The closest thing done on critical
bibliography similar to that in literature was to determine whether the
author is a Filipino or a foreigner and whether the given bibliographic
entry belongs, for example, to this or that category. In a sense—in view of
…the discrimination of entries with respect to authorship (Filipino or
otherwise) and to category—this work goes beyond the pale of
enumerative or systematic bibliography (Gripaldo 1996:v).

There is an added feature of this update, viz., the compiler has included as
appendies (1) the overlooked materials from the previous bibliographic works and (2) the
various journals and newpapers/magazines consulted.
Before ending this Preface, the compiler would like to express his gratitude to all
those who, in one way or another, has helped me in making this work possible, but more
particularly to Dr. Rainier Ibana, the chair of the Philosophy Department of the Ateneo de
Manila University, for lending me his works and for providing me the list of works of the
Ateneo faculty; Dr. Leonardo de Castro for emailing me his biodata; the College
Research Fund of the DLSU College of Liberal Arts for granting me a modest research
fund; and most especially, Mr. James Esguerra for serving as my graduate research
assistant and for uncomplainingly spending his time and effort in the gathering of data
and other related matters.

INTRODUCTION

The present update (1998-2002) has more entries than the first update (1993-97)
in the sense that there are more periodicals and books consulted. However, it is very
noticeable that there are a number of entries overlooked from the first update which the
compiler is now attaching as Appendix 1. There are in fact 39 pages of these entries. So,
by and large, the first update is comparable in output to the second update if we count the
items overlooked. What is important is that we are moving to our cherished goal: the
comprehensive bibliographic listing of works in Filipino philosophy.
There are 26 chapters in the current update while there were only 23 chapters in
the first update. We have added the Philosophy of Culture, Philosophy of Myth, and
Pragmatism/Neopragmatism. Appendix 2—on the periodicals consulted—is now
attached: 125 journals and 9 broadsheets.
Hereinbelow are the tabulations of the entries:
