A MILLION WORDS SCRIPT

Scene # 3: Mitzi & Teachers

Many of our parents dont read well, but research shows that children who read with their parents and who read independently for just 15 minutes a day will read an extra MILLION WORDS in a year! What a great goal, but weve all experienced problems getting parents involved with reading to their children. Lets discuss these problems first. Teachers discuss problems

Scene #4: Mitzi

Several resources can overcome these problems for your kids and their parents. Today we will look at three ideas: Parents reading with their children; high school students reading with children; and parents using software to read with children. First, lets take a look at a parent reading with her child. Parent reads and child reads and they discuss the book. Of course, in a perfect world all parents would know how to read and would take the time to read to their children every day. In our school, however, some parents cant read well enough to read to their children. So we can use our high school and college students to read to our classes. These young people encourage K-3 students to get involved with reading Antonio will read to children We can definitely use technology to help our students begin to read independently. And we can use this same technology to help our nonreading parents read with their children. I use a program called RAZKIDS which allows students to read while they hear the story read to them. Parents can read along with the kidsThe program also allows the children to record themselves reading a story. Lets take a look at what a child will see when he uses RAZ-KIDS and how a parent can use it with the child, even if the parent is not a good reader

Mackenzie will demonstrate how a student uses RAZ-KIDS to record himself reading [Mackenzie will read and record a few pages] What do you think about these 3 methods of encouraging our children to read? And which one do you think will be most successful?

MITZI & TEACHER S Scene #12 MITZI Scene #13 MITZI #14 MITZI MITZI In addition to helping students and their parents read, online programs also track the time students use the program to read, give the students quizzes and feedback, and track the students progress. The teacher must show the parents how to login to the program, and since the children use the program at school, they can also show their parents how to log in. Teachers can also print a form letter to the parents along with login cards. The RAZ-KIDS program will print awards for the students as they make progress, and will automatically move them up a reading level After the story reads itself, the student can read in the microphone and hear herself read; here is [Students name] who will show us how this works As we have discussed, RAZ-KIDS reads the story to the child, shows the child and parent how to read, gives the child a quiz, and even records the child reading the story. In summary, children should read 15 minutes every day outside of school. Like weve seen, reading with their parents is a great way to encourage reading, and reading with teenagers makes reading more exciting. And finally, using a computer program to help parents read with their children will even give the child rewards for reading. And the biggest reward for the child? He can increase independent reading and before you know it, the child has read and extra MILLION WORDS in a year.
