II. LADLE SLAG DETECTION SYSTEM

Experienced operators have long detected vibration differences between steel and slag flow on the ladle shroud manipulator arm. However, the translation of these signals into meaningful results is very complicated and requires the use of leading edge sensor and computer technologies in conjunction with steel making operations knowledge. We have combined its expertise in metallurgy, casting operations; vibration analysis and software engineering to develop SlagTracker, a reliable real-time slag detection system customized to meet your specific melt shop application. Unpredictable and unreliable slag carry over from ladle to tundish has a serious effect on casting operations from both a yield and steel quality point of view. During sequence casting, slag carryover leads to a build-up of slag in the tundish. This causes slaginduced breakouts in billet casters, sliver defects in the cast strand, reduced tundish refractory life, and reduced productivity. While increasing the ladle heel may reduce the amount of tundish slag, the resulting yield loss can have a significant negative impact on productivity and steel shop capacity. The SlagTracker System can help ladle operators control the degree of slag carryover from ladle to tundish. Each system is tuned to each steelmakers unique operation and needs, by optimizing the yield/quality trade off. Information is stored by grade family to automatically set the optimum detection sensitivity in the SlagTracker. The SlagTracker System is a patented method that measures the vibration on the shroud manipulator arm. When there is a change in vibration due to vortex formation or slag flow through the shroud, it is instantly recognized by the computer software and the appropriate action is taken. Reliability, Maintenance and Benefits Our SlagTracker System is designed to handle the harsh steel plant environment and
requires little maintenance.

The benefits of the SlagTracker, ladle slag detection system, include: Reduced slag type breakouts in billet casters Improved casting consistency. Increased yield. Improved steel cleanliness and quality. The combination of increased yield, improved quality, and process consistency can be used as performance parameters to evaluate the benefits of the SlagTracker. Typically, payback is less than one year.
