By The Way, What About CDMA?

There are many wireless technologies besides GSM, the next biggest being CDMA. GSM dominates mobile phones, but CDMA has found new success in fixed wireless lines. In India CDMA actually began growing faster in June 2007, though from a much smaller base. The two technologies now complement each other in the market.

You can even get a fixed wireless line from Dialog, using CDMA. Just call 011 7 100 100 for more info.

What Is GSM?
6.

M stands for mobile. So how exactly do mobiles work? Well, a mobile phone is actually a small radio receiver and transmitter. It sends and receives messages from a tower.

The words GSM now stand for Global Standard for Mobile communications. But thats not how it always was. GSM used to mean Groupe Spcial Mobile - the working group that came up with a common system European mobiles. That standard has since spread to every country in the world, covering 82% of the population. But what does it mean?

We use radio signals for everything from Television to commuincation with spaceships. Each type of communication has its own frequency range so that they dont interfere with each other. Each tower has a fixed amount of channels. If you have one tower per city, those channels fill up pretty fast. In order to serve more people, cities are now divided into cells (hence cellular telephones). More towers allow you to reuse the frequency, enabling more people to talk.

S stands for standard. There are two standard ways to get even more value from frequency, and GSM uses one of them. More towers isnt enough. By 2010 there will be over 4 billion people on GSM networks alone. In order to fit them, we needed to divide up the frequency more. TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), pictured above, divides the frequency up into 6.7 millisecond chunks. That means you can fit three times the calls (or data). CDMA cuts all the voice and data into coded pieces, fills up the frequency, and then uses the codes to put it all back together on the other end. They both work well. GSM uses TDMA, adds digital compression, and SIM cards for user identity. Those standards were set in Europe and took off from there. They worked well and - being a widely used standard - meant that people could roam to other countries and that prices for phones and equipment dropped because so many people were buying. GSM worked, and setting a standard enabled the whole world to grow together.

Want to use your Tri-Band phone all over the world? With the GSM standard you can. If youre a Postpaid subscriber just bring a request letter and a deposit (depending on categories above) to a Dialog Arcade. For Kit Instant Roaming just SMS ACT ROAM to 678 or dial 676. G means global. The GSM standard is powerful in many ways Dividing frequency by time means much more capacity than analog networks. Being digital also means compression, and support for data services like SMS. Plus, being developed and agreed upon by Europe meant a big subscriber base to start from. Finally, the use of SIM cards meant that people could get new phones or switch companies without having to go to the store and reprogram their handset. All of this led to a boom in GSM use worldwide. Today GSM is used by over 3 billion people in 212 countries. Since all these countries use the same standard, you can also roam around the world. That means you can take the same phone and SIM and enjoy voice and data service when you travel. This also means that companies making equipment are guaranteed a mass market, making their products cheaper and better. Not a bad bit of work for 21 years.

5 Questions With Hollow Point Halo

1. Do you think Sri Lankan bands can reach a global audience? They actually wont be able to, unless they change their attitude towards the work they do. Frequent practices, improving the way they sound, choosing the best studio, etc. If they actually sit down and focus and learn more of the instrument they play, the infinite number of different notes, sounds and chords they can emit, instead of just messing with the surface of it, maybe, maybe they will be able to get closer to the international audience out there. 2. Do you think there is scope for a musician in Sri Lanka? It depends on what you want to do with your music. If you are into addressing the masses, then yes very much, there is scope for music in Sri Lanka, You do see a number of young musicians coming out and playing to really large audiences, selling lots of albums. But if you want to figure out music as an art form, if you want to figure out what this music thing really is about, then not too many people interested in here, go look somewhere else. Sorry. 3. Do you think audiences can relate to your music? Does that really matter? There are small pockets of audiences that are appreciative of the music we make. The more people relate to it, the better we feel as musicians, but there is a fine balance as the more people relate to it the more commercial it is, and at some point we want to go a little further than just producing commercial music all our lives. 4. Do you use new technology to promote yourselves?/ (SMS, TV, radio, Facebook, etc) Yes we do. Very much. 5. How do you think the medium affects music? Does a market based on mp3s and ringtones produce different music than one based on playing records? No, actually, as far as Hollowpoint Halo goes, we use the medium to promote ourselves, but not to actually produce music, but having said that, we use the art done by Chathuranga and Andre to inspire us sometimes, and they are digital artists, they paint on a digital canvas, so they do the websites and come up with good video concepts and so in a way the digital medium does help us greatly, but it doesnt influence us to the extent of changing our music to because of it.

The loss of a mobile phone can cause a great deal of inconvenience. This issue on our Mobile Ettiquette series, were featuring ways you can take precautions against this type of trouble.
If you are walking, place your phone in a secure place so that you can hear it or feel it vibrating. Never carry it in your back trouser pocketthis can be an invitation to thieves, or it may inadvertently fall out. Public places are hunting grounds for eager thieves as people place their phones within easy access to ensure they hear it ringing above the surrounding noise. A person could also mistakenly pick up a phone thinking it belongs to them. It is, therefore, better keep a mobile phone in vibration mode and place it where you can feel it. Please be wary when using your mobile in public, especially in lonely places to ensure that you are alert to any danger around you.
