Lifelong Learning

Carolyn Young
Director of Continuing Studies at Western Drawing on her experiences in adult education, Carolyn is a true believer in the value of lifelong learning. By developing strategic partnerships at the University and in the community, Carolyns mandate is to ensure Continuing Studies at Western provides rewarding and innovative programs for adults seeking career growth, professional development and personal enrichment. In alignment with Westerns strategic plan and global trends in education, her priorities are to expand online learning and support programs to grow the international student population.

Welcome to Continuing Studies at Western!

When you think of online learning, what comes to mind? Curiosity? Achievement? Uncertainty? Resistance? Responses to online learning range far and wide. However, as more people discover that the virtual classroom provides the quality, accessibility and options that free them from the limits of time and space, they describe genuine satisfaction with their online experience. Let me tell you about Jeff, who is taking online courses in Project Management. Even though Jeff lives close to London, the convenience of fitting the courses around his family and full-time job meets his needs. Another student, Corey, lives too far away for weekly trips to London. Over eight months, she completed the courses in the Professional Certificate in Adult Education through blended learning, which combines two days in the classroom and three weeks online. Corey appreciated the opportunity in discussion forums to make thoughtful contributions to the topic. For many different reasons, our students have made the choice to try out online learning. They are not only satisfied with the experience, their success inspires them to continue their explorations in lifelong learning. At Continuing Studies, we offer over 200 courses face-to-face, completely online or blended. In the future, we plan to offer more courses online and encourage you to consider this innovative approach to growing your knowledge, expanding your choices and opening up your world. Whether its online or in our classrooms at Citi Plaza, Continuing Studies enables lifelong learning and our team is genuinely committed to that endeavour. Through the courses and programs we offer, people explore their possibilities, discover their potential and make decisions that transform their lives; for the team at Continuing Studies, that makes our work profoundly satisfying. What We Do Specializing in Adult Learning
Continuing Studies at Western specializes in adult learning. We understand the unique needs of adults and design all of our courses and programs with those needs in mind. We know that one of the greatest challenges facing adults who want to return to or continue learning is a fear of failure and we go to great lengths to provide an environment that will enable students to be successful, while at the same time challenging them to push their boundaries. Designing innovative, unique and exciting programs and choosing exceptional instructors who understand adult learning are the most important things we do; this is what sets us apart as a leader in continuing education.

Professional and Personal Development

Courses and programs in personal and professional development are designed with your career and life aspirations in mind. This category of courses and programs can be further defined as follows:

Certificates
Certificate programs are designed for practitioners who have at least two years experience in the field in question or a related area. These programs can be completed on a part-time basis over three years and help practitioners improve their career-related knowledge and skills and attain a recognized university credential. Please note that there is an application process for these programs, however interested individuals may take up to two certificate-credit courses prior to applying for formal admission. After students have completed two courses, they are required to apply and be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the certificate program itself.

Individual Courses
With few exceptions, all of the courses that we offer at Continuing Studies can be taken as stand-alone courses. These courses offer the best of the academic world and the real world, blending cutting edge research and exceptional instruction with applicable skills. While many courses are not evaluated-no tests, exams or assignmentsothers do involve testing, assignments and group work. Please note that there is no application process for these courses; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest.

Professional Certificates
We offer a wide variety of professional and personal development programs designed to build on your educational or work experience and take your career or personal interests to a new level. There is no application process for our Professional Certificates; simply register online or over the telephone and we will look after the rest. Students are not required to enrol in the entire program, however the Professional Certificate will only be awarded upon successful completion of all requirements in a program. Many of the courses that form a professional certificate have been developed to meet the standards of various professional organizations (e.g. HRPAO, PMI, ADR Institute of Ontario, CIM). For details on how you can use our courses to achieve a professional designation, please contact our office.

Post-degree Diploma Programs

Post-degree diploma programs are designed primarily for recent university graduates or individuals with little or no work experience in the field in question. These programs are typically one full year in length and link career-specific skills with the more theoretical knowledge obtained in undergraduate studies. In most cases, these programs include worksite placements that provide students with an opportunity to gain real world experience in their chosen career. Please note that there is an application process for these programs; students must be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the diploma program itself.

Corporate Training

Adult learners are motivated to learn and they bring a spectrum of experiences, perspective and insights to the educational environment. I find that they are willing to engage and challenge the instructor which keeps us nimble and on our toes. I know that I learn as much from my students as they learn from me. Continuing Studies is all about 360 degrees of interaction from both the student and the instructor. This, for me, is what makes teaching fun. The reciprocity of interaction between student and teacher is what can take the education experience to another level for all stakeholders.

Through expert facilitation that addresses participant needs at the individual level, the Adler Professional Coaching Program blends the exploration of time tested, well researched, proven theory with well crafted experiential activities.

How does the Program work?

Conflict Management: Alternative Dispute Resolution

Conflict management helps parties resolve their differences without resorting to a more confrontational adjudicative process. It looks at needs, interests and solutions and can promote healing. It is voluntary, timely, confidential and based on mutual agreement. It is designed to yield solutions that are adapted to the particular circumstances of individual cases and focuses on solving problems rather than imposing solutions.
Since 1987, Continuing Studies at Western has delivered leading edge training in conflict management skills. Using proven techniques and strategies, we offer a broad range of conflict management courses that enable you to develop in-depth understanding and skills applicable in virtually any situation.

The Program
Our instructors are expert and experienced mediators, facilitators and negotiators. More importantly, they know how to share their knowledge and expertise in ways that will allow you to build your own knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence. Our skill-building curriculum is designed to enable you to learn and understand the theory and concepts of conflict management and then apply them in increasingly complex scenarios and simulations. Real world applications and examples enable you to use the skills and knowledge from our program in virtually any situation in which you want to achieve a win-win solution. Our small class sizes provide countless opportunities to interact and network with classmates and to share and learn from each others experiences. There are numerous opportunities built into the curriculum for you to practise and apply the concepts and techniques. Individual coaching and feedback enable you to develop your skills and confidence in conflict management.

Leadership
The philosophy of the Leadership Program is that the role of a leader is diverse. Leaders exist at all levels of an organization and in many different roles. Effective leadership requires a leader to be a strategic thinker, manager, motivator, team member, mentor and visionary at specific times and according to circumstances and to understand the difference.

Who is this Program for?

The Leadership Program is for YOU! Anyone who wants to be on a progressive career track toward establishing a leadership role in their organizations and their lives will benefit from the essential competencies developed in this program. The program is designed to enable you to build on your existing personal and professional knowledge, understanding and skills in making the transition to leadership.

How the Program works

There are two levels in the Leadership Program. The first level is called the Professional Certificate in Leadership and consists of three required courses and four elective courses. The courses are designed to enable you to build the skills and develop the insights required for effective leadership at any level of the organization. While each of the courses stands alone as an important learning tool, completion of the courses in each level provides you with a building block approach to leadership success - skills you develop in one course are easily transferred and honed in subsequent courses. Students wishing to develop more advanced leadership competencies can take an additional five courses and obtain the Advanced Professional Certificate in Leadership.

What You Will Learn

Using a highly interactive, participatory approach, the Leadership Program will enable you to:
n

Explore and discuss different strategies and theories of leadership. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own approaches to leadership and how these approaches will change as you progress through the program. Understand the key role that developing and communicating vision plays in motivating others. Develop your understanding of the skills needed for selecting, leading and developing teams. Practice your skills in dealing with conflict and resistance. Explore and develop your understanding and skills in helping others to achieve success. Build confidence in developing shared goals and empowering others. Understand how to align vision and strategy with a view to initiating and sustaining organizational and personal change.

Why Western?
n

Our instructors include faculty members and researchers from Western and other universities, in addition to specialists from leading global organizations. Our building block structure has been developed from current thinking and cutting edge research in the field of leadership development. Our unique modular approach provides flexibility and choice that enables you to structure the program to meet your own professional development needs. Our participants come from differing backgrounds, occupations and levels of experience - this diversity maximizes your learning experience. Our program never remains static - we constantly review the program to make sure that the content reflects current research and thinking about leadership.

I enjoy teaching adult learners because of the diverse backgrounds that they bring to the classroom. This diversity leads to a more enriching learning environment for everyone including myself. Together we are able to share experiences, giving the class a more comprehensive view of the non-profit sector. Through curriculum and collaboration, learners are often able to find solutions to real time issues they may be having in their own organizations.

Adriana medina diploma in not-for-Profit Management

Similar to main campus programs, Continuing Studies programs maintain a high caliber in the curriculum for their courses; however, my learning differed in that I had more hands on experiences in this program. Most of the courses also required us to get in touch with non-profits within the community to either: observe, work along side or base our assignments on their organization. This was a great opportunity to network with people in your field of interests, which other programs Ive taken did not offer.

ONLINE offered completely online; participants require access to the Internet. BLENDED a combination of both classroom and online formats; participants require access to the Internet.

Recommended System Requirements

Just as you would prepare yourself for a face-to-face course, preparing your computer for online learning is your responsibility. You will require an Internet connection and are responsible for the cost of arranging the connection. Both dial-up and high-speed Internet connections are supported by WebCT-OWL. However, the increasing sophistication of web-based resources means that it may take more time to access WebCT-OWL over a dial-up connection. Please take this into consideration when choosing your Internet connection. Also, your instructor may have hardware or software requirements specific to your course; please refer to the course outline. A complete list of system requirements is available online at http://webct.uwo.ca. As well as minimum system requirements, WebCT-OWL requires the Sun Java Virtual Machine (Sun JVM) to be installed on your computer. Depending on the Internet browser you choose, some browser settings may need to be adjusted for maximum functionality. For more details on browser settings and learning with WebCT-OWL, visit http://webct.uwo.ca.

Why ONLINE?
Flexibility
Online courses offer students the ability to study and participate on their own schedule. Students can attend a course at anytime, from anywhere. Connect from your home, after you put the kids to bed, at your office, or while traveling.

Access
Online courses allow us to serve students who live too far away to attend face-to-face courses. It also offers all our students the opportunity to be taught by excellent instructors whose location or schedules preclude attendance at local weekly class meetings.

Technology
The web offers new ways of presenting course material, allowing students to interact with it that can improve student understanding. Using the Internet to attend class, research information and communication with other students teaches skills in using technologies that will be critical to workers in the 21st century business community.

Post-Degree Diploma Programs

Post-degree diploma programs are designed primarily for recent university graduates or individuals with little or no work experience in the field in question. These programs are typically one full year in length and link career-specific skills with the more theoretical knowledge obtained in undergraduate studies. In most cases, these programs include work-site placements that provide students with an opportunity to gain real-world experience in their chosen career.
Please note that there is an application process for these programs; students must be admitted to both The University of Western Ontario, as well as to the diploma program itself. For individual program requirements and up-to-date course information, please visit our website at uwo.ca/cstudies or call our office at 519-661-3658.

The Professional Certificate in Project Management
PMI professionals come from virtually every major industry including aerospace, automotive, business management, construction, engineering, financial services, information technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and telecommunications. Continuing Studies at Western has designed its Professional Certificate in Project Management to enable participants to develop the advanced-level project management skills of analysis, critical thinking and evaluation that are sought after in all areas of the global workforce. This rigorous program has been developed for future project management professionals and managers, supervisors and highly motivated individuals with career advancement objectives.

The Program
This Professional Certificate program consists of five highly-integrated project management courses consistent with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBok) developed by the Project Management Institute, plus two business-related courses. The courses in this program have been compared to average undergraduate programs in intensity and time commitment. Each in-class course is presented using a hands-on, case study approach. Chapter readings and web-based presentations will comprise the regular homework, while classroom sessions will focus on applying the concepts covered in the homework. Online courses are structured the same way as their in-class counterparts, making it relatively easy for students to alternate between formats over the course of completing the program. The first course, Introduction to Project Management, provides the foundational knowledge and terminology necessary for all other courses. The courses have been designed to be taken sequentially, however, highly motivated individuals who wish to fast-track their progression may take more than one course at a time. Prerequisites must be adhered to and students should be mindful of the intensity of each course. Not all courses are offered every semester in both online and in-class formats. Students are advised to plan their course timetables carefully and register at least one week in advance of the start of each course. Students are encouraged to contact Continuing Studies if they require assistance in mapping their program progression and completion. All Project Management courses (both in-class and online) are enhanced with online learning. Participants require access to the Internet. Please see page 39 for details and system requirements. PMI, PMBoK and the PMI R.E.P. logo are marks of the Project Management Institute Inc.

I have done all my learning online since I have two young children but the group work and instructors have been great. In that type of learning atmosphere, keeping students engaged and also having students participate with each other is very hard but everyone is very committed so it works. I highly encourage anyone to take that difficult first step into continuing your education. Continuing Studies makes it very easy to take the classes and the instructors understand that your work and home life need to be considered as well.

instructor introduction to non-Fiction, intermediate non-Fiction, copywriting

Writing is very personal. Even when your assignments are non-fiction, its still your writing being put out there for the instructor to critique. Sharing your writing with peers in the classroom also helps prepare students for getting comfortable moving into the publishing or copywriting markets. The students work hard to ensure a safe environment for sharing ideas and reading articles and other written materials, and for creative exchange of ideas to strengthen their work. I also see such tremendous growth in their writing and self esteem as a writer by the final assignment. Beyond that, I love to watch the individuals become a cohesive group. Some remain friends after the class. Some stay in touch with me and share their publishing successes.

Aside from the hard skills such as accounting and financial analysis, the Western CIM program has empowered me to view my work environment in new and interesting ways. The Organizational Behaviour course was particularly fascinating as it provided new insights into how people interact with one another and what motivates such interaction. It was fun to observe my colleagues with this newfound knowledge! Personally, the breadth of program content allowed me to better understand and appreciate the work of others and the value of collaboration, both within my department and beyond.
