YouwontbelievehowgratefulIamforyoutakingthe timetoreadthismagazine. Youmightwantmetoexplainwhywevegonetothe troubletoproduceamagazineandaudiovisualmediatogo alongwithit. Thinkofitasjournopunk. Bythat,Imeanthatweretakingcontrolofthemeansof mediaproduction,totrytostemtheirresistibletideof dumbeddowncorporateandpoliticallycontrolled traditionalmedia.Weliketothinkitsverymuchinthe waythatpunkmusicianstookoverthecorporatemusic sceneinthe70s.So,withverylittleinthewayof training,equipmentand,somemightargue,talent,were steppingintothebreachfirst. Ofcourse,thatmeanswemaywellgetshotatfirst. Sobeit. Thenatureofwhatwe,intheR4nger5,doistogetthe jobdone.Therewasnooneelsewecouldfindjust gettingonwithmakingmedia,inourvicinity,sowe decidedtobecomethemedia,ratherthansitonourarses andwhineaboutit. Itsacommunityeffort,withsubmissionsbeingwelcomed forallourprojects,R4nger5TV,R4nger5Radio,10n3 R4nger5(examplesofwhichcanbefoundinthe accompanyingdiskifyoureholdingoneofthevery rareprintedversionsofthistome)andnow,this magazine. ThisisthefirstinstalmentoftheR4nger5WarJournal. Ihopewecanproduceoneoftheseeveryquarter,and maintaintheissueofourveryownnewsletter.Feelfree toprintthisout,emailitorcopyitinanywayyou seefit,andpassitontoanyoneyouthinkmightwantto readit. Alittleover3yearsago,Igotmyfirstbroadband internetconnection,andwaslazilylookingthroughthe onlinemediasectionofWinamp,andIfoundamedia channel,calledRantMedia,thatwasshowingallsortsof independentTVshows,thatpeoplehadmade,and distributedfreely.Someofitwasverygood,andsomeI couldntreallyconnectwith,butitwasagreatconcept. OneoftheseshowswasbyRantMediathemselves,Sean KennedysPatrolling. WhenIsawthisforthefirsttime,Iwashooked.Iwent totherantMediawebsiteanddownloadedeverythingI could.HerewassomeonewhosepoliticsandagendaIcould reallygetbehind. SeanKennedyadvocatedselfresponsibilityandtaking commandofalltheinfluencesinyourlife.Ihadalways respectedindividualswhocouldtakeastandforwhat theybelievedin,whetherIsharedthosebeliefs,ornot. InadditionSeanwentthroughagroundupreconstruction andreevaluationofyourpersonalpossessionsand clothing.Espousing,amongotherthings,thefollowing threepersonalcriteria. Whatdoesitdo?Howwelldoesitdoit? WhereamIgoing,andwhoscomingwithme(never gettheordermessedup!)? Onewog.Onekit.

Thelaststatementgavemealittlebitofaproblem.I had,asmanypeopleinEnglandandcommonwealth countries,werelikelytodo.Yousee,inEngland,where Ilive,thewordwoghasseriousracialconnotations. Itcannotbeusedinpoliteconversation,inthesameway asthewordniggerisunacceptable(thankfully), worldwide. 5

Inthisinstance,however,MrKennedywasreferringto theAmericanscientologytermusedtorefertosomeone whowasnotascientologist.WhichIsfromtheNavyterm foranyonewhohasnevercrossedtheEquator. EarlyintherunningoftheSKTFMradioshow,Seanhad referredtoscientologistsasanoppressiveforce,who actuallystatedthattheireventualaimwasworld domination.Theysaidtheyintendedtotakeoverthe governanceofplanet.Oncetheyhadachievedthis,all thenonscientologists,orwogswouldbecomeaslave labourforcetoservethefaithful. Beingasubversivekindofaguy,Seanproudlydeclared himselfawog,andinvitedotherstostandproudlyas wogstopromoteindividualfreedomsandpersonal responsibility. Theothertwostatementsareusefultoevaluateobjects andplansonemighthave.Theysoundsimple,butare effective.Thefirsthelpsyouestablishtheusefulness ofanythingyouareconsideringacquiringthenmultiple optionsexist. Ifyouaskwhatdoesitdoandhowwelldoesitdoit?, thenyoucanlookbeyondbrandnamesandadvertisingand reallyevaluatesomethingbeforeyougetit. TheWhereamIgoing,whoscomingwithme?(andnever messuptheorder!)maxim,allowsyoutoaskyourself whatyourgoalsare,withinanysituation,without allowingthosegoalstobecorruptedbywhatothersmight think.Compromiseisnotabadthing,buttoomuch compromisecandestroyyourgoalsaltogether,ifyoutry toaccommodatetoomanypeople. Finally,Onewog,Onekit.Istoremindindividuals thatyoutakeresponsibilitiesforyourneedsasa person,andfromthereyoucantrytolookafterothers. TherewasalotofinformationinPatrollingbutthose werethemostsalientpointsIgleanedfromit.Having alwaysbeenintocampingandbeingoutdoors,Ilappedup alotofthesurvivalinformation,andreviewsof militarykitandmaintenance. Sixmonthsthenpassed,asIabsorbedeverythingRant produced.AsIgottowardstheendofthatperiod,I became,somewhatunreasonably,frustratedwiththerate atwhichtheguysoveratRantwereproducingtheir stuff,(nottheirproblemtheyareonlyhuman)asIgot totheendoftheirbackcatalogue.AndIstartedtolook furtherafieldforothermedia. Ithenstartedtoproduceawebsitethathadlinksto theindependentmediaIwasinterestedin,andtryingto 6

promotetheidealsthathadappealedtome.Iwantedto teachpeoplehowtodostuff,thatIhadlearnedhowto do,andpointpeopleinthedirectionofotherswhocould supplyusefulinformation,aswellaslearnfromother people. Alittlewhilelater,Isawthemovie,Zeitgeist.An independentmediacreationaboutthestateoftheworld. True,youneedtotakewhatitsayswithafairlylarge pinchofsalt,butthefilmraisesanawfullotof questionsabouthowtheworldworks. Itwassortofanepiphanyforme,andIapproacheda friendofmine,whomyoumayhaveheardreferredtoas Graafen,andshowedhimsomeepisodesofPatrolling. ThenIshowedhimZeitgeist. He,likeIdid,reactedverystronglytoZeigeistand wantedtodosomethingaboutit.Wedecidedtodonothing foraweek,andseeifwefeltanydifferent. Wedidnt. WethenrecordedthefirstepisodeofR4nger5Radio,and uploadedittotheinternetarchive.Itwasreallybad, andthesoundqualitywasawful,butpeopledownloaded it,andaskedformore. Littlebylittlewestructuredtheshow,andexperimented withequipmentandtheformat,andouraudiencesteadily grew.Neververymany,butenoughsothatwefeltthatwe wereachievingsomething,inthelightofwhatwas happeningintheworld. Wetriedtomakeeverythingwedidsimpleandcheapto replicate.Ihavespentverylittleonequipmentpurely forthestudio.Theactualamountisprobablylessthan 20,notincludinginternetaccess.Prettymuch everythingweuse,Ihadlyingaroundbeforewestarted. Wecarriedon,becausewefeltthattherewereatleast somepeopleintheworldthatalsothoughtthatthere weresomeprettycorruptsystemsinplacegoverningus, andstiflingcreativity.Wereportedoninstancesof oppression,theremovalofpersonalfreedomsand technicalinnovations.Weacceptedallcontributionsand newsstories,wedidntcensoranyone.Wehad,andstill hadonly4rules:

Astheshowgrewlonger,andwehadmoretosay,we incorporatedsomeindependentmusic.Wecontactedvarious artists,whowereprettymuchuniversallyhappytoallow ustobroadcasttheirwork. Bythetimewereachedshow12,wehadafewsideline projects,andasortofmissionstatement,aswellasa fledglingformat. Thesoundqualityhadimproved,andweevenhadsome interestfromotherswhowantedtohelpcohosttheshow. Wewerealsogettingsomegreatcontributionsfrom listenersinsomeprettyfaroffplaceslikemainland Europe,intheformofSchneelocke,andAmerica,inthe formofWuzzintme,Brognought,Avagdu,andMacavity. Guestpresentersturnedupbothinperson,and,onceor twice,appearedontheshow,usingSkype. Byepisode15wehadourfirstSkypeguestfromoverseas, intheformofWuzzintme,whohailsallthewayfrom Illinois,intheUSA. Inthenewyearof2008,theRantMediaforumswereup, soIannouncedtheshowontheforumstoseeifwewould getanyinterest,andCimmerian,thestationmanager, askedifwewantedRanttostreamourshow. Byepisode19,wewerebeingbroadcastonRantMedia,one ofourfantasies,thatwehadjokedaboutonepisode1of theshow.Wehadregularguestpresentersandplentyof skypeguests,andgettingtowardsaprettydecentstudio setup. Wecoverallsortsofstoriesandhaveallsortsof peopleontheshow.Wetrytocoverpoliticalandsocial issues,selfsufficiencyandtopromoteindependent media. I'vetriedtostayoutofthisforaslongasIcouldbut itseemsIshouldstatemyviewpointfortherecordjust sonothingisleftunclear.Idonothatethemilitary, ourtroops,etc.Theyareatoolinourforeignpolicy toolbox.Wecanusediplomacy,wecanuseeconomics,we canusethemilitary. Themilitaryisasword.Theproblemis,wehavea begrudgedpresidentwithanagendaandacabinetwitha ColdWarmentalitycarryingoutapreconceivedstrategy (akabefore9/11)andtheyaretheoneswieldingthe sword. Agoodcarpenterdoesnotblamehishammerforpoor construction,Idon'tblamethemilitaryforthe decisionsthepresidentandhiscabinethavemade. Even further, the ISI have been implicated in the 9/11 attacks by wiring money to the leadhijacker.TheUnitedStatesisaccusedoftryingto coveritup.Therehasbeenlittletonomediacoverage aboutthis,noinvestigation. NowtheCIAissendingenemycombatantstoSyria,where therulesoftheJaneva convention don't apply.
