Virtual reality is the simulation of real world or imaginary world for specific purposes.

These simulations are usually audio-visual in nature are implemented with the help of hardwaresoftware coordination. Virtual reality software is also available for implementation on normal computers with extended input devices like joysticks, etc. Virtual reality is now getting more and more common amongst the simulation experimenters who previously relied on physical prototyped models. Often, 3-dimensional imaging is used as a technique for simulating construction plots and machine designs. Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools are now commonly used in mechanical and civil engineering for simulating designs. Virtual reality applications are mostly seen as video games and training software, but their importance is enormous. They can be applied to simulate extra terrestrial environments, under water plots or even to produce a complete virtual world! Using virtual reality has several advantages over actual implementation or trial. Virtual reality models are far more reliable and cheaper than actual physical models. War like environments can be created more effectively and without the possibilities of loss of life. These simulation experiments are usually easier to design and redefine and hence a lot of time and effort is reduced. Virtual reality simulations though need specialized hardware. Commonly used devices are virtual reality headsets, virtual mounted displays, holographic 3D imaging devices, navigation devices, touch and grasping devices and various sensing devices. These devices help in generation of efficient simulation and real world experience through virtual reality techniques. Virtual reality techniques are advancing very rapidly and soon they may be available as simple gadgets. Artificially intelligent systems are now aiding the virtual reality techniques to generate expert systems that virtually replace the need of a human expert. Such systems have the natural benefit of 24x7 availability without the need to pay per advice. Organizations are now turning to

these solutions to test new ideas before actually implementing them. Telepresence is also being worked upon which enables people to be virtually present at multiple places at the same time. Virtual reality is the future technology. Soon, virtual environments and virtual experiences will place into our drawing rooms. It will have same effect in upcoming future as that was generated by television in mid of 20th century. The actual effects of virtual reality can still not be predicted exactly but the only thing that does seem certain about VR is that it will grow and develop and as the technology matures, it will become better, cheaper, and more accessible.
