Degrees Earned

Abstract This assignment is about the degrees earned by level and race/ethnicity, sex, and region. Through the paper there are four different tables that the information comes from. Each table covers different aspects. Table 227 covers magnitude how large the problem is, 226 covers scope how widespread the problem is, 288 covers changes how the problem varied over time, and 289 covers disparities the differences in the problem.

1. Problem Identification. The problem that's in the data in tables are as the years progress less and less males earn higher college degrees. In the earlier years more males earned more college degrees then females. Then in the later years females surpassed males in earning almost every degree. The only degree females did not pass the males in was the doctoral. Other problems that occur are the higher the education level less black non-Hispanic earn them. With the lower level of degrees such as associate or a bachelors degree are the degrees you are more likely to see a black person with. However, after a bachelors degree the numbers decrease heavily. The problem throughout these tables are males and black students are not pursuing their education past a bachelors degree. 2. Problem Description. This problem affects the survival of African Americans because now a days you are going to need a high level of education to get a good job. If African Americans keep dropping out of high school and not going to college they will not be able to work anywhere besides fast food restaurants. Also with the high African American drop out rate there are a lot of them homeless, on drugs, or in jail. All of these things have an affect on African Americans. The low levels of education also keep blacks from earning jobs that they are able to do. For example, if two people are being interviewed for a job and one has a bachelors and the other a masters most likely the person with the

masters will get the job. So blacks not going after a higher education can make them miss out on the high paying jobs. 3. Findings. The information I got from my charts showed me that African Americans need to

apply themselves more so they can earn higher education. The characteristics of the table are age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, region, marital status, and civilian labor force status. The graph also gives the population for each category and the statistics for the levels of education. The charts also list the amount of people without high school educations. All the tables are consistent with the information it gives. In all blacks have low rates of higher education and high rates in not finishing high school. a. Magnitude: I think the problem is a big problem because in every category females are making less money then males. This is a problem because for the single mothers out there its going to be harder for them to support their family. Table 227 also shows that black females make less money then white females with a bachelors degree or higher. To add to that they also are paid less then males with the same level of degree. When it comes to black males they also make less money then there white counterparts with the same level of degree. The amount of money that black males and females earn with a professional, or doctorates degree is not recorded because the the statistics was not large enough to meet the standards for reliability of a derived figure. I think

Degrees earned

that no matter what race or sex everyone should have the opportunity to make the same amount of money for the degree that they have. b. Scope: One problem that shows up in table 226 is the high rate of black non high school graduates. This rate is at 17.0 and blacks also have the lowest rate for advanced degrees with 6.1. So blacks all over are having problems with finishing high school and earning that high college degrees. In all the regions the Northeast has the best rate when it come to Advanced degrees with 12.8. when it comes to the south the south has the highest rate of non high school graduates with 15.3. looking at these numbers you can see that the Northern region is more focused on school then the people in the southern region. c. Changes: In these tables the educational problems had big changes over the years they covered. In 1970 men that earned an associates degree was 117,000 and females were at 89,000. Then if u fast forward the time ten years to 1980 more females earned an associates degree. This pattern continued on and on as the years progressed in the table. This same thing happened in almost all degrees. With the bachelors degree the females did not surpass the males until 1985. The only degree that the females never passed the males in was the doctoral degree. However in 2007 both males and females finished up with 30,000. Over all this table shows that throughout the years more females got into school and earned degrees while the males were outnumbered.

d. Disparities: There are many disparities in this chart such as the race/ethnicity's earning each degree. Black, non-Hispanics have higher numbers of graduates with associates and bachelors degrees. Then the numbers drop when it comes to the masters and doctoral degree. In 2007 Black, non-Hispanic bachelor degrees were at 146,653. Then when you look at the masters degree for that same year of Black, non-Hispanics the numbers dropped to 62,574.
