Well,oneofthepicturesIdidin1946,theone likeabutcher'sshop,cametomeasanaccident. Iwasa\emp6ngtomakeabirdaligh6ngona eld.Anditmayhavebeenboundupinsome waywiththethreeformsthathadgonebefore, butsuddenlythelinesthatI'ddrawnsuggested somethingtotallydierent,andoutofthis sugges6onarousethispicture.Ihadnointen6on todothispicture;Ineverthoughtofitinthat way.Itwaslikeonecon6nuousaccident moun6ngontopofanother.

I'vealwaysbeenverymovedbypicturesabout slaughterhousesandmeat,andtomethey belongverymuchtothewholethingofthe crucixion.Itappearsbythesephotographsthat theyareawareofwhatisgoingtohappento them,theydoeverythingtoa\empttoescape.I thinkthesepictureswereverymuchbasedon thatkindofthing,whichtomeisverynearthis wholethingofthecrucixion.

Inpain(ngthisCrucixion,didyouhavethethreecanvasesup simultaneously,ordidyouworkonthemquiteseparately?

Iworkedonthemseparately,andgradually,as Inishedthem,Iworkedonthethreeacross theroomtogether.Ididinaboutafortnight, whenIwasinabadmoodofdrinking,andI diditundertremendoushangoversanddrink; Isome6meshardlyknewwhatIwasdoing. Andit'soneoftheonlypicturesthatI'vebeen abletodounderdrink.Ithinkperhapsthe drinkhelpedmetobeabitfreer.
