GLENGARRY AND YORKSHIRE, 2010

BY JACKIE MCKERNAN
The original design for this sweet vintage sweater was published in Handicrafter Magazine, and retyped on Hardrockzombie.livejournal.com in 2009. The original sweater was knit in one size only, in a very bulky gauge and with rather vague instructions. Designer Jackie McKernan loved the sweater, but wanted to see it in a finer gauge, with multiple sizes and row-by-row instructions - We are glad she did! The modern version reflects the curve-hugging deep ribbing, feminine neckline, and sleeve details perfectly; the finer stitches and sizing makes it more wearable and comfortable; and the clear instructions make it an easy knit.

CRAFT Knitting DIFFICULTY Beginner MATERIALS Yarn Berocco Pure Merino (100% extra fine merino wool; 92 yds[85m]/1.75 oz[50g]); CYCA 4; #8566 grass: 5 (5, 6, 7) skeins. Needles US size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles; US size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge. Notions Tapestry needle; 2 removable stitch markers. GAUGE 28 sts and 32 rows = 4 in St st, unblocked; 20 sts and 26 rows = 4 in St st, blocked. The yarn used for this garment stretched substantially in the blocking process; it is critical to check gauge postblocking, especially if a substitute yarn is used. Finished measurements of the garment are based on post-blocking gauge.
