he colloquial you see him teet before you see him face aptly describes this disc jockey. His smile exudes friendliness, pleasantness and an openness one can hardly deny. But beyond his smile and hearty laugh, there is a man who is blazing with confidence, a man who dances to his own beat, a doting father and a man who is assured of his wants and needs. On his birth certificate he is named Dexter Blake but by many he is known as DJ Linkage- the man with the voice of a million. Born in Waltham Park, Kingston Jamaica and raised in Aenon Town, St. Ann, this country bumpkin, as se sometimes refers to himself is not an ordinary person. DJ Linkage has always had an ear for music. As a youngster, I used to play the drum in church, he reminisces, I just had a natural flair for playing the drum. By the time Dexter finished Aenon Town All Age School and graduated from Haille Selassie Secondary School, he was fast becoming mainstream drummer playing for the likes of Tristan Palmer and Sugar Minot. DJ Linkage is a professional drummer and has played for various bands inside, around and outside of Jamaica. And of course, he later formed his own band - the

Read on people, because there is more to this young and savvy entrepreneur. DJ Linkage can be heard on did I just hear drum rolls and trumpet sounding? Pardon the interruption, but as I was saying, the man has all right to toot his horn. Yes, Dexter Blake is the proud but humble owner of Linkage Radio, (www.linkageradio.com). Usually, when he is not too busy taking care of other businesses and jet-setting to and fro to Jamaica, you can hear him over the airwaves entertaining and informing his ardent listeners. Concerning the radio station Linkage shares this, You know, I just wanted something for the people and the community. Something for the whole family, DJ Linkage stresses. When asked, what is the difference between his radio station and any other radio station , Linkage clarifies, Linkageradio.com is family orientated. Linkage radio is a place where classic and clean music is heard. It is a place where DJs are not rude but are very interactive with the listeners and fans. Ernest Davis Prepares for His Return as Mount Vernons Mayor

MOUNT VERNON, NY Ernie Davis is poised to return to Mount Vernon as Mayor. Ernest Davis served three terms as mayor before losing a 2007 re-election bid; Davis views his latest win as validation that he is the best person to lead the city. Davis will replace Mayor Clinton Young, the Democrat who beat him in November 2007. To beef up oversight at City Hall, Davis said he would consider bringing back an inspector general and providing more funding for the position, which had its salary slashed by the council. He also wants to revive several proposals from his last administration, such as beautifying some parks and bringing a hotel to the downtown area. Im working on rehabilitating and refreshing Mount Vernon, Davis said. The only way you can do that is to be out there, bringing the community together.

present project- Sting. Spanning almost three decades, Sting started with humble expectations in 1984. Since then, Sting, dubbed the Greatest One Night Reggae Show on Earth, is now one of the most anticipated stage shows in Jamaica. The buzz about this stage show is always about the lyrical clashes between artistes. According to Laing, one of his most memorable Sting years was in 1991 at the National Stadium. That clash was between Ninja Man, the original front teet, gold teet Don Gorgon, and the Don Dada Supercat. Also of interest, is the theme surrounding Sting. This year, the theme is Rumours of War. Laing enlightened me: Last year, was disappointing because we did not have a clash. This year, the people are crying for a clash. Dem want war he continues, and thats how the theme Rumours of War came about. Its about 45 shootout segment. This year, Sting is going to be like a 45 shoot-out, 45 minutes into every hour we will have a clash. In another segment called Young Generals, featuring artistes such as Blak Ryno, Popcaan, Zamunda, Romain Virgo, Chris Martin and others all will get a chance to prove their lyrical abilities. Other notable mentions are, Movado, I - O c t a n e , I- Wayne, Khago, Iyara and list of others. Sure, Sting without the lyrical ladies would be amiss. Up to date, it was not c o n f i r m e d if the ladies are going to have a lyrical clash, but slated

and for an inside scoop of what to expect at Sting 2011. Amidst ringing telephones, people reporting to him, Laing shouting out commands, and setting up an interview with a TV station, I managed to garner a little of his attention. Though Laing kindly stepped aside for a moment, away from the chaos, I realized then that time is limited, and I should forget the preambles and get to the point. Briefly, who is Isaiah Laing? Born and raised in St. Catherine, Jamaica, Isaiah Laing attended St. Catherine High School. After leaving High School, Isaiah went for training at the Police Training School in Port Royal. Laing reminisced on the days as a police. Working in the ghetto was not easy, but I learned the craft quickly. I learned what to say, when to say and where, he said. When asked if he missed being a police, Laing chuckled, No, but once a police always a police. We talked a

few. After wrapping up with Laing and thanking him for his time, I couldnt help thinking, with the fledging US economy, the stake out down on Wall Street, the unpredictable cold weather in New York, what better place to be thawing out? Immigrant rights advocates and the New York Civil Liberties Union on November 9th accused the Border Patrol in upstate New York of abusing its authority by questioning the citizenship of train and bus passengers, as well as people going about their business in towns miles away from any international crossing. A report based on a Freedom of Information request suggests agents charged with securing the U.S.-Canadian border have taken advantage of their 100-mile area of jurisdiction to snare and deport illegal immigrants who have been in the country for years, using police-state tactics that allow them to boost arrest rates and justify increased funding.

The Associated Press reported last month that the Border Patrol recently stopped the routine transportation checks in favor of acting only on specific information about a potential threat. Current and former agents said field offices around the country began receiving the order in September, soon after the Obama administration announced

From 2006 to 2009, Rochester agents arrested 2,743 people during routine walk-throughs of trains and buses, the report found. Of those

Most had medium or black complexions and most were detained in jails or holding centers while their cases were pending, according to the report. In addition to recommending that the

transportation checks stop, the authors said state and local police should refrain from collaborating with Border Patrol agents on arrests or calling them for help translating so that the local officers preserve residents trust and cooperation. They also called on the governor and state attorney general to monitor the federal agents operations.

On hearing of the passing of Heavy D, one person was quoted as saying, God please give Heavy D back, and well gladly give you Soulja Boy, Gucci Man and all the other whack-ass rappers. Our artistes need to ask themselves, will I be viewed in the light of a Heavy D or will I be valued like the others? It is time therefore, to put the egos aside, put the back-biting aside and help another artiste/person along the way; produce quality work. When we provide something of value we can expect to receive just compensation for our efforts. Life can be short and very uncertain, yet it can be long and still uncertain. The launch was held at the Iberostar Suites in Montego Bay. Walter Elmore, chairman of the festival, made the announcement. It was also announced that the Art of Music Productions (AMP) is the new company that will produce the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival 2012. Jamaica Jazz and Blues will be AMPs first major event. The festival is scheduled from January 26-28 at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium, with Dion being the closing act. Bringing an act the magnitude of a Celine Dion is something I have dreamt since the day I started the jazz festival 16 years ago, Elmore admitted, adding that he never thought he would be able to do it. With admiration, the AMP chairman spoke of the multimillion-dollar album seller, Dion, A factor in the entertainment. When you see a Celine Dion performance, it is etched in your mind, he asserted. Six police officers assigned to the Gun Court Remand Center could be facing corruption charges after they were allegedly caught on video taking money from one of Vybz Kartels relatives. Kartel currently sits in a Kingston-based jail where he faces two murder charges and a drug-related charge, all issues within the last month and a half. Now its being reported that investigators from the police Anti-Corruption Branch followed one of the six police officers from the Gun Court Remand Center to the home of Kartels relative, where he videotaped the law enforcement official taking

Dion, who really does not share the limelight with other artistes because of her reputation, will play alongside the cadre of a R&B sensation Kelly Rowland, Jamaican/Canadian Jully Black and jazz great Nicole Henry who graced the stage in 2004. In celebration of Jamaicas 50th year of Independence, AMP has announced a stellar mix of musicians who will showcase the evolution of the countrys music. They include Toots Hibbert, Marcia Griffiths, Yellowman, Shaggy, John Holt and Half Pint. Celebrating its 17th year in 2012, Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival will operate with under one of the largest budgets ever, says the new CEO. With a name change coming soon, gospel artiste Papa San will be releasing a new album entitled My Story. Papa San, who has released albums such as Victory, Real & Personal, God & I and Higher Heights in 2009, says he will be changing his name to Papa Son as this will be more meaningful. It is something that I prayed about. God changes peoples names for them to represent what He wants them to represent. It is a name that has more substance to what I am doing. I represent the Father, I am His son, said Papa San, who is now a senior pastor in his Floridabased church. My Story talks about my personal life, my personal story. It shows you how God is a healer and a provider. My story is everybodys story, he stated. The project, which took about a year to complete, also features contemporary Christian musics multi-award winning singer/songwriter Nicole C. Mullen and Grammynominated vocalist Trey Lorenz. There is a bit of family presence with his 19-year-old daughter, Tasan, doing the interlude for one of his songs, while his 16-year old son, Tyshane, produced three of the rhythms.

Allegedly, the video shows the officer accepting money from the relative of the popular deejay in exchange for being allowed to visit Kartel in is restricted area of the Constant Spring jail. Additionally, reports revealed that the officer was not searched before being allowed into an area of the lock-up off limits to the public; spending a considerable amount of time with Kartel while other law enforcement officials allowed the illegal meeting to take place. As a result, the police officer, along with five other law enforcement officials were transferred from the Gun Court Remand Centre while Vybz Kartel has since been moved to the Horizon Adult Remand Centre on Spanish Town Road due to the alleged incident.

International recording artiste Kiprich has recorded a song titled Lighter as a tribute to the families of 17 persons who lost their lives in a bus accident in the island of St Lucia, regarded as the worst accident in the history of the Eastern Caribbean Island. I read about the accident on the Internet and I was so moved by the plight

of the St Lucian people and this horrible tragedy ... to lose 17 people on such a small island, it hurts my heart. So I went to the studio and recorded the song, Lighter, Kiprich said in a release. St Lucia observed three days of national mourning following last Thursday evenings accident. People have been sending me messages to my Facebook inbox, saying that they have been crying when they hear the song on the radio. I really feel their pain and hope that in time, their souls will be healed but this is a lot to go through for such a small nation, Kiprich said.

News
Tragedy struck in St. Lucia when a bus fell over a precipice into the ocean leaving 16 dead. The catastrophe occurred in the Choiseul community of Morne Sion around 8:00 pm.Reports are that the bus was returning to Labayee from Choiseul after a funeral; but detoured to Delcer to pay respects to the family of the deceased. They were driving down the Morne Sion Road heading south to Choiseul village when the bus did not make the left turn, careening over the cliff and landing straight onto the beach, 120 feet below. When rescuers arrived on the scene, three strewn bodies were seen on the beach being washed by the waves; two of them were apparently dead, but the third was showing signs of life. She was taken to the hospital but she didnt make it. However it wasnt until the capsized bus which was partially submerged by the wave action was turned over that the full horror story struck. The first victim hoisted was a two-year old boy followed by a series of wet dead bodies. They were all put to lay on the beach. The final count was 15. Emotional screams of sadness filled the air. A gentleman from Gertrine is reported to have lost his three children. Minister of National Security and Home Affairs Guy Mayers has described the accident as one of the worst in the countrys history. The entire country is now in a state of mourning.

Tragedy in Cambodian village has disturbing St. Lucia17 dead reputation for child sex slavery
SVAY PAK, Cambodia -- Svay Pak has a disturbing reputation. The village outside Cambodias capital of Phnom Penh is known as a place where little girls are openly sold to foreign predators looking for sex. One of the girls who was sold into the sex trade told CNN that before she could read she was working in a brothel. I was about five or six years old, she said. The first man said to me, I want to have sex with you. At the time I didnt know what to do. No one could help me. Dozens of girls have had the same experience in her neighborhood. She says she was approached by a man while playing outside. He asked her to come over and talk to him, and before she knew it she was alone and being asked for sex. Some of the girls were actually sold into the sex trade by their own parents. Many were housed with other girls her age in what looked like a cell. The room was pink had thick walls and no windows and was about 7 feet long by 7 feet wide. There were several rooms just like it stuffed into a building that had a gate over the front door and bars on the bathroom window. The brothel she lived in specialized in pre-pubescent girls. The young girls were sought after by the foreign men who came to the area for one reason: They knew they could find young girls for sale. At the beginning they talked to me gently but when

South African police were about to arrest the cricket commentator Peter Roebuck on a charge of sexual assault when he apparently jumped from a hotel window, according to a close friend who was with him just before he died. Jim Maxwell, the Australian Broadcasting Corporations main commentator, told the Guardian he left Roebucks Cape Town room less than a minute before the 55-year-old former Somerset captain apparently leapt to his death on Saturday. He was in a state of utter despair apoplectic, said Maxwell. He was sitting in a chair near the window.

It takes just five seconds to open that window. Given his emotional state he must have suffered a brain explosion and out he went. South African police refused to confirm that an officer was with Roebuck when he leapt from the 6th floor of the Southern Sun hotel, near Newlands cricket ground. Oxford-born Roebuck was staying at the hotel while covering Australias Test series for Australian media. Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo refused to comment on reports in South Africas New Age newspaper that a 26-yearold Zimbabwean man had gone to nearby Claremont police station earlier on Saturday and laid charges of indecent assault against Roebuck. they raped me, they also beat me up, the former sex slave said; her head bowed and tears rolling from her eyes uncontrollably. She is now 18 and no longer trapped in a terrible and painful life. Three years ago she found a safe haven after Don Brewster and his wife moved into the neighborhood and began operating a rehabilitation center for child sex slaves. I really think its evil -- I mean there is no understanding it. The girls, I mean, theyre in such pain and suffer so greatly and it is obvious to the man thats raping them, Brewster said. Brewster says things have changed in Svay Pak in the past several years. It used to be girls who hung out in the open, beckoning from behind barred windows to the men who walked by. Pimps no longer descend on every foreign man who shows up in the neighborhood offering to sell them virgins. While the situation is changing, there is still a nasty underbelly in the area, but travelers have to go looking for it now. The sex trade has gone underground, but it is still there. If you just look on the surface you would say that doesnt happen but just yesterday we rescued a 5-yearold girl here in Svay Pak, said Brewster, who works with Agape International Missions. Now there is a place that provides a secure environment for children to just be children.

illing Gadhafi was not the solution to the Libyas issue because fighters are still attacking each other with rockets, mortars and machine guns, the Associated press reported. The fighting, which has killed at least 13 people since late last week, raised new concerns about the ability of Libyas transitional government to disarm thousands of gunmen and restore order after an eightmonth civil war. Libyas interim leader, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, said his National Transitional Council brought together elders from the feuding areas - the coastal city of Zawiya and the nearby tribal lands of Warshefana - over the weekend and that the dispute has been resolved. I want to assure the Libyan people that everything is under control, he said. However, fighting continued as he spoke. Heavy gunfire and explosions of rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were heard over several hours in the area between the Warshefana lands, about 30km west of Tripoli, and Zawiya, another 15km to the west. White smoke rose into the air. At one point, the two sides were battling for con-

trol of a major military camp of the ousted regime, said a fighter from Tripoli. The camp, once a base of elite forces commanded by one of Gaddafis sons, Khamis, is located on a highway midway between Tripoli and Zawiya. In all, at least 13 people were killed in the fighting, including four from Zawiya and nine from Warshefana, according to gunmen and a hospital doctor in Warshefana. More than 100 people from Warshefana were wounded since Saturday, said the doctor, Mohammed Sawa. Casualties stemmed from gunshots as well as shrapnel from rockets and mortar shells. On Sunday evening, a Warshefana field commander, Ashraf Borwais, delivered a severely burned fighter to the local hospital. He said the man was wounded when his vehicle was struck by artillery and exploded. Borwais said fighting had stopped in the evening. The dogs have retreated, he said, referring to the Zawiya militiamen. Zawiya fighters, meanwhile, manned roadblocks on the outskirts of their city at intervals of about 200 metres. Groups of jumpy armed men, some brandish-

ing RPGs, crowded around the checkpoints. Fighters searched boots of cars and checked identification papers. The reason for the initial clash remains unclear, although accusations have been flying, including that some of the Warshefana had links to the old regime. At one point last week, fighters from Zawiya entered Warshefana and seized weapons. In retaliation, Warshefana fighters set up random checkpoints and fired at the main highway. Abdul-Jalil said the NTC has established a committee to address the grievances of both sides. He said the fighting was sparked by young men behaving irresponsibly, but he did not elaborate. Despite the growing tensions, Abdul-Jalil and other NTC leaders have said they cannot disarm the fighters quickly. Noting high unemployment among the armed men, Abdul-Jalil said the new government must offer alternatives first, including jobs, study and training.

orn in Jamaica West Indies, Yanks was always surrounded by Reggae Music. His two major influences in those times were Bob Marley and Eddie Fitzroy. During his youthful days, parties and Dance Hall sessions were a part of his life style. This was due to the fact that his biggest hobbies were singing. Yankes recalls that many times he would make an attempt at singing; the elders would not give him a chance. Nevertheless, he was still determined to do what he enjoyes. He practiced with friends and eventually began to write songs on his own. He visited Tony Rebels studio in Kingston regularly, where many of the local artist recorded their songs. At this time he tried to get a start in night clubs and parties but still was not able to find anyone to give him the chance. Finally Yanks decided to take matters in his own hands. He started hosting parties and concerts of his own. In doing so he created his own fan base that accepted his music. He got his big break at Hope Gardens, located in Kingston Jamaica. Since then he has been performing at other Reggae venues around the world.

nd so we have come to another period in our political life, one which visits us almost every five years since the introduction of universal adult suffrage since 1944. It is time when the electorate has the freedom to go to the polls and elect representatives of both the Peoples National Party and the Jamaica Labour Party to become the Government of Jamaica once they past the post first. We have 63 seats in Parliament to be filled and the Party which wins the majority, first past the post, will choose one among them who satisfies the interest of the majority on the winning side to become prime minister. Historically, we have never had a young man the age of Andrew Holness, our present prime minister, who has been chosen for that slot. Indeed, neither have we had a woman who has led one of our major political parties to sit in that chair resulting from a general election. We have an interesting period in front of us. The world is closely watching us. We have to be sensible, constructive and thoughtful in what we do as the world watches us along with our

own in the diaspora. But more at home, it will not be concern about who leads our country from the stand point of Jamaicans who have no decision one way or the other about gender, class or educational background. The principal issues on the table is about job creation and crime. But principally, crime seems to be higher on the agenda of concerns. Mind you, there are those who have made the point that they would really like to see what Portia Simpson Miller does and how she would survive being put in the top seat with a political mandate. Equally, there are those who have thought about what new would Andrew Holdness bring to the political arena, his having been in the collective seat for over three terms. In this global village, political leadership and management has taken the route of a new paradigm of power emergence and control. Since the period of post-colonialism to independence and beyond up to today, power has been under the control of the ruling class. That has been shifted tremendously as the model has been incrementally taken a nose dive. By W Witter - Babatunde

Political power is now emerging from the ground-up and speedily moving from the top down. Education of our people from below has turned the tide. More of our people have realized that the electorate is responsible for choosing those who lead and are capable of putting food on the table, improving education, offering security and opening up the framework for employment abroad. Additionally, the opportunity for small businesses to gain recognition and powerful traction to the extent where it has put people on the ground level in charge of their own destiny. Clearly, gone are the days when accusation of crime and drug running remain pinned to the skirt tails of our people on the ground. Many of the sons and daughters of that particular region of our country which has been tarnished with the image of criminality and drug running. Professionals from all levels have emerged from inner-city areas and from rural communities and they are determined to show a difference, Small businesses have been moving up the ladder from the small and powerless higglers to more refined and purposeful businesses with greater interest in high technological advancement to even the stock market. There is also entry into the media as well as in the stock market and other worthwhile ventures which provide an avenue of hope and upbringing. Much of this advancement from Veteran Jamaican politician David Coore died at his home in the Dominican Republic. Coore, who was 86, died of complications from pneumonia. Coore had moved to the Spanishspeaking Caribbean country as his current wife lives there. Regarded as one of Jamaicas most brilliant attorneys, Coore was one of the earliest members of the Peoples National Party (PNP) and was among the team that, in 1961, drafted the Jamaican constitution. Coore, who was born in Anchovy, St James, attended Jamaica College where he formed a close friendship with Norman Manley who eventually co-founded the PNP and became its first president.

below has a great deal to do with education and bonding. The learning curve has grown tremendously to take into consideration the importance and vitality of entertainment. The names of our great icons have offered a great sense of collaboration with many across the globe who would like to know more about Jamaicans given their embracing the lyrical contents of Peter Tosh, and Bob Marley along with a host of others who have served the world with distinction. It is against this background we see where hope has sprang anew for our people who have been battered, down trodden, vilified and thrown on the dump heap of history even by their own. We look forward to a new tomorrow as our brothers and sisters in the metropole have given their own weight like the Israelis, the Palestinians, the Indians and the Chinese have done for their own. Yes, we have come a long way and there is yet a long road to trod but we will survive. Even as we gather peacefully to make our own choose as to who shall lead, we are confident that justice, righteousness and truth will prevail to make us exceptionally proud. We are a great people and we will become even greater yet has we move along in good grace, unity and happiness. Coore received his tertiary education at McGill University in Canada, where he read for an economics degree, and, after that, at Oxford in England, where he studied law. He served as chairman of the PNP when Michael Manley was elected president of the party in 1969 and was named minister of finance in the first Michael Manley-led Government in 1972 In 1978, he resigned and took up a post with the Inter-American Development Bank. Throughout his life Coore was an ardent voice against colonial rule and has been a strong advocate of the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice.

INCOME TAX RELIEF FOR APPROVED FARMERS - Section 36(d) of the Income Tax Act 21 of 1982 was enacted for the purpose of encouraging agricultural production by granting income tax relief to any person engaging or proposing to engage in a prescribed agricultural activity. A prescribed agricultural activity is any activity which the Minister of Finance prescribes by Order in the Jamaica Gazette. THE EXCHANGE CONTROL ACT - The Government of Jamaica has no restrictions on the movement of foreign currencies flowing either in or out of Jamaica. This Act facilitates the free movement of capital to other countries, whether for investment or repatriation purposes.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT - The research and development arm of the ministry is equipped with the resources and technical competence and provides oversight and support to new agricultural initiatives.

SUBSIDIZED IRRIGATION - In an effort to mitigate against the adverse effects of drought and the high cost of irrigation on the development of the sector, the Ministry has sought to provide further support through the subsidization of irrigation.

Incentives for Investing: SUBSIDIZED LAND PREPARATION - In an effort to reduce the capital costs incurred by agro-investors/agro-businesses, the government has acquired agricultural machines and equipment. The services of these machines and equipment are made available to agro-investors/agrobusinesses at a subsidized rate.

As part of the initiative, stamp duties, transfer and registration taxes will be waived in the issuing of certificates of compliance allowing the average Jamaican to finally own untitled property. Manny Pacquiaos third meeting with Juan Manuel Marquez ended in farce as the Filipino sensation edged a controversial majority decision. Boos rang out around the MGM Grand in Las Vegas when two judges scored the fight 116-112 and 115-113 in the WBO welterweight champions favor, while the third called it a draw at 114114. But the crowd of more than 16,000 were left wondering how Marquez had been denied what appeared to have been a clear victory. Marquez, 38, fumed: I was robbed, it happened again. I dont think there is much more I can do in the ring. I would like to tell everyone that its possible to beat Pacquiao. It was done and we won. Only three people didnt see it the judges didnt see the same thing. Im happy with my performance. Honestly, I dont know what I need to do to change the

win the 4x100m relay in a world record time of 37.04 seconds. Bolt was disqualified for a false start in the 100m final won by Blake, but won his other five races over the distance with a best time of 9.76 seconds. This season was a really trying season for me, I really had to work hard and stand up my game, Bolt told the official IAAF website. There were some close races this season, I really had to push myself. So this really means a whole lot to me. Because I really came out there hard this year, and all the hard

work I put in paid off. Minister of Youth Sports and Culture, Olivia Grange said, Bolt deserved to win after a challenging but successful year in which he defended his title in the 200 metres at the World Championships before anchoring the Jamaican team to victory in the 4100 metres in world record time. Grange said she was very proud of the young Jamaicans, adding that their successes underscored the importance of following ones passions, hard work and believing in ones abilities. PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC): Perennial Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) captain Daren Ganga has quit the post, two weeks after his sides failed campaign in the Super50 series in Guyana. In a release the 32-yearold announced he would be stepping down as head of the side he has led for the last nine seasons. I have always believed that one of my most important duties as captain is to foster the development of the players in my team as a critical aspect of succession planning, said Ganga. The evolution of the team into the mature unit it is, along with the emergence of a pool of potential leaders within the team, reaffirms that the time is

right for relinquishing the reins of captaincy. I wish to make it abundantly clear that I am not retiring from cricket and I continue to make myself available for selection on the national cricket team and pledge my support to the new captain. Ganga has led T&T with success over the years, winning every title on offer in the region. Under his leadership, T&T won the 2004 one-day title and the 2006 four-day title before going on to capture back-to-back one-day titles in 2008 and 2009. He also steered T&T to capture the second Stanford Twenty20 Championship in 2008 before helping to put Trinidadian cricket on the map by reaching the final

mind of the judges. Pacquiao shaded the early exchanges and stepped up with a two-punch combo to the head in round four. But Marquez hit back with a crashing straight right in the fifth, leaving PacMan requiring a pep talk from trainer Freddie Roach. Marquez continued to apply the pressure and drew blood from the champions mouth before landing two good body shots in round eight. Pacquiao, realising he need to up his game, responded in the ninth with some big shots as the bout began to come to life. But aside from a Marquez slip and a Pacquiao claim for a headbutt, the finale to this

I thought the fight was there for him and he stayed in the counter-punching mode and didnt move forward. If a judge is going to give a close round to someone, it will be the aggressor.

An unprecedented 1,325 schools across 123 New York districts have been identified for improvement under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Of those named, 847 schools and 89 districts are newly identified as needing improvement, numbers well above last years 102 schools across four school districts that were then newly identified for improvement. This is just further evidence as if we needed any that we must move forward to reform our schools and change what is happening in our classrooms, Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch said in a statement. Our goal is to ensure every student graduates from high school college- and career-ready. These numbers show that too many schools are moving in the opposite direction. The Regents have adopted strong new reforms to improve student performance and increase accountability. If student

performance doesnt improve, schools must be held accountable. We are watching. The states Board of Regents is developing a reform agenda that focuses on sustained long-term improved student achievement, and the state has adopted the national Common Core Learning Standards. Although New York didnt file a notice of intention by an October deadline for No Child Left Behind waivers, the Board of Regents says the state is considering ways the waivers can help New York lessen focus on certain mandates in the law that have proven ineffective in New Yorks education system. While the 2014 NCLB deadline for proficiency for all may not be achieved, its the right goal and it should be our goal, State Education Commissioner John King, Jr. said in a statement Thursday. Our students are not graduating with the skills they need to succeed in college and careers. That has to change, and change now. State officials say that the drastic increase in the number of schools that failed to make Annual Yearly Progress can be attributed to a number of factors: Sunset in 2009-10 of a statistical adjustment for the students with disabilities subgroup that has made it more difficult for this group to demonstrate AYP. Change in grades 3-8 English language arts (ELA) and math testing dates, which requires students to show greater learning has occurred because tests are given later in the school year. Change in the methodology for equating grades 3-8 ELA and math assessments, which eliminate a tendency to overcompensate for the comparable difficulty of tests from one year to the next. Changes to the grades 3-8 ELA and math assessments, making them less predictable. Increase in the high school graduation rate goal and progress targets, which have substantially raised the percentage of students who must graduate or the yearly increase in the percentage of graduates in order for a school or district to make AYP. The state commissioner will also identify persistently lowest-achieving schools later in the academic year -- those that are among the lowest performing 5 percent of schools based on a combination of school performance and standardized tests, and those that have graduation rates below 60 percent for three consecutive years. Districts with schools that are identified as persistently lowest-achieving must submit a plan that would implement one of the four federally mandated intervention methods of turnaround, restart, closure or transformation. In August, New York City

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced that they had raised $1.5 million in private donations to fund the Regents Exams January administration. The exam was canceled to account for an $8 million state testing budget deficit, and the initial loss of the January administration threatened many students ability to make up failed tests, graduate or graduate early. The large number of New York schools failing to meet AYP comes amid a report that student scores on the nations most reliable reading and math exam are still low and achievement gaps among students of varying races and incomes remain wide. Among the findings: just 40 percent of 4th graders and 35 percent of 8th grade students are performing at or above a level of proficiency in math, and just 34 percent in both grades tested proficient in reading.
