Together against HIV/AIDS and violence

Greater Tubatse Municipality, The Police, NGOs, mines and various other roleplayers teamed-up against HIV/Aids and domestic gender-based violence this week when a Partnership in Sports day was held at Shopiane Sports Groud at Longtill (Eerstegeluk). During the proceedings the Limpopo Police Jazz Band entertained the crowd and poets, comedians and, child care workers, brought the message accros that HIV/AIDS as a killer disease should be fought tooth and nail, while gender based violence also have no blace in communities as it breaks down families and society as a whole. Politicians also got their turn and to speak. Greter Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Nkosi Josias Mahlake, could not attend but his message was delivered by Cllr Rinkie Khoza on his behalf. Cllr Mahlake said we are all aware of the impact of HIV/AIDS in our communities and we need collective effort to put the message across. He said our area is experiencing the fastest growing economy in the country that brings a lot of socio-economic challenges to our communities. The area of Steelpoort is known for its mining activities and a passage that connects Limpopo with Mpumalanga and Gauteng. Acording to the mayor the increase of goods transport passing through Steelpoort and the town is also used as a convenient stop-over by transport drivers. This has prompted the emergence of illicit and immoral activities like prostitution. This practise is causing our young girls to leave school and their homes in search of quick money. Some went up to the extent of engaging in sexual activities without using protection. We are excited for this initiative because through sports we can raise awareness for children to abstain from sexual activities until they are old enough to do so the mayor said, adding that The prevalence of HIV/AIDS in our society is of great concern and it needs our collective effort put message across. Government and organs of civil society have come up with programs to learn about the disease and also how to prevent infections. We are affected because those infected are living within us and we must not stigmatise them. We must create an HIV free society and that campaign should start with everyone. Talking about gender-based violence he satated in few days time we will be launching 16 days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse. We come from a background where gender based violence was not reported because women felt that men were correct in applying violence to solve family problems. This has gone far where men are killing their spouses in the name of bringing discipline in their homes. We must stand up as society to condemn those who are promoting these barbaric acts. You cannot hurt someone you love but as men we should make sure that we protect those we love. The effects of genderbased violence bring irreparable damage to our children because they constantly witness the events. Our role as men is to teach boys that to solve problems through violence is not okay but must use their minds to confront any challenge they are facing. Our presence today here is the commitment that we are serious about the fight against HIV/AIDS and violence towards women and children. We must use any activity especially sports to put the message across. After all the formal procedures the crowd enjoyed e hearty meal whereafter soccer and netball between several teams were played.

Cllr Khoza speaking on behalf of Mayor Mahlake.

Anglo Americans Tar for Maseven road Zimele goes green

- Green SMEs targeted Zimele, Anglo Americans enterprise development arm, this week lauched its fifth fund, known as the Green Fund, to help create a real difference to South Africas environmental sustainability and green economic growth. Anglo American has committed an investment amount of R100 million to the Green Fund, which aims to empower and encourage entrepreneurs to operate in the green economy. The fund will target investment opportunities that mitigate carbon, reduce energy and water consumption, and improve waste and emissions management. The fund will focus on developing and funding Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that promote and develop environmentally sustainable projects. Subsequently, this will enable communities to both respond to key environmental challenges such as climate change and water security, and take advantage of opportunities in the green economy. It will also create another platform for talented entrepreneurs and SMEs. Zimele has already realised considerable success through its four established Funds, namely, the Supply Chain Fund, the Anglo American Khula Mining Fund, the Communities Fund, and the Olwazini Fund.Through these four funds, since 2008, Zimele has provided R530 million in funding, supported 1001 companies, completed 1355 transactions, and its underlying investments employ 18783 people, and these businesses achieved a collective annual turnover of R1,9 thousand million. Managing Director of Zimele, Nick van Rensburg, says that the Green Fund demonstrates Anglo Americans commitment to the environment. Our aim is to operate in a safe, responsible and sustainable way by minimising our environmental impact and taking advantage of opportunities that deliver long term benefits to our stakeholders. The Green Fund is an essential part of this strategy, as it will facilitate new investments in projects which yield both environmental and economic benefits, and encourage a greener way of thinking among the South African public.

The road between Ngwaabe and Maseven received its tarred surface recently. Maseven is the villiage that is on the left hand side when travelling past the De Hoop Dams gate on the R555 when coming from Roossenekals side. Ngwaabe is next to the road to the Jane Furse road on the left hand side a few kilometers after travelling from the steel bridge over the Steelpoort / Tubatse river. There is no road marks or traffic signs on this road and when travelling from Ngwaabe, it stops abruptly just before you reach Maseven when you reach is dry river. Obviously some sort of a bridge will me needed here. The black top continues on the other side of the river bank goes virtually through the village and then stops again. You have guessed it, dry river with steep banks (bridge also needed for this one. On the other side, it is gravel all the way to the R555. Eventually, this route, when upgraded 100 percent, will make it easier to go to Jane Furse from the R555 (no steel bridge).

What is irritable bowel syndrome?

What is Irritable Bowel Sydrome (IBS)? It is a disorder that leads to abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements, cramping and other symptoms. It must be noted that it is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease. IBS often develops during the teenage or early adulthood years. It is also more common in women than in men. IBS does not cause permanent harm to the intestines and is not the forerunner of diseases such as cancer. It can be treated and symptoms relieved. It can however be a lifelong condition. Causes: It is not clear why patients develop the syndrome, but one of the causes can be after an infection of the intestines. Stess could be another cause. Because the brain and the nerves constantly connect to pass messages for survival along, they may become more active during stressful periods. The intestines could become more sensitive and contract more. Symtoms: The symptoms could differ from person to person, but the main symptoms include abdominal pain, a sensation of being very full, gassy or bloated. A person is often diagnosed with IBS if theyve had the symptoms for at least 3 days for a period of three consecutive months. People suffering from IBS could switch between constipation and diarrhea. Symptoms could lean to the one side or the other in different degrees. Many people with IBS lose their appetite. Signs and tests: A doctor usually diagnose IBS based on the symptoms without running many tests. It is often recommended that patients who suspect that they may suffer from IBS follow a 2 week lactose-free (milk free) diet to check for a possible lactase deficiency. Blood tests my be run to determine if a patient suffers from a low blood count (anemia). Stools my also be checked for signs of infection. A colonoscopy test may also be done. This test examines the colon. If the symptoms began after the age of 50 and they include weight loss or bloody stools or abnormal blood tests they could also indicate one of the following diseases: Celiac disease, Colon cancer or Chrohns disease. If anxiety causes the symptoms, it can be treated through therapy. Treatment: Treatment will relieve the symptoms of IBS. Lifestyle changes are often recommended. Regular exercise and better sleeping habits may help reduce the symptoms. Dietry changes could also be prescribed. It could help if a patient increases the fibre in their diet (although it could increase the bloated feeling). Avoid large meals. Avoid drinks that stimulate the intestines. They may include drinks with caffeine like tea or colas. Over the counter medicines for treatment are available, but patients are often advised to first visit their docter to make sure that the best solution is found and that nothing else is wrong.

Tubatse is set to make it happen

2011 was a year of excellence
On 9 November Tubatse Chrome took some time out with their leadership team to have a strategic look at the year behind and the one to come. Heykie Berg (photo: far right and bottom right), well known actor who currently performs in Binnelanders and who won Survivor 2011 inspired the team with great words of wisdom. He highlighted that everyone in life should have a clear purpose and that one should take action to make your purpose happen. One should not compare yourself to others and ask why they achieved what they have, but rather ask how you can go about it to achieve your purpose. Desmond McManus (photo just top right), the General Manager of Tubatse Chrome followed on by sharing the slogan for Tubatse for the year 2012 which is MAKING IT HAPPEN. He emphasized that Tubatse really pulled together to achieve their slogan for 2011 which was a year of excellence. He thanked everyone for their inputs during 2011 and encouraged the leadership team of Tubatse Chrome by closing off the session with the following inspirational words: Together we will grow, together we will make a difference. We will make it happen! (Information and photographs: Davida van der Walt).

To use blue lights on not?

The use of blue lights by vehicles carrying politicians came under the spotlight recently after 18-year old Thomas Ferreira was hit by the car of an MEC jumping over a red traffic light in Gauteng. Emergency vehicles with lights such as ambulances, the fire brigade and the SAPS are required to use both their lights and sirens to indicate that they are on their way to an emergency. The law states that these tools may only be used in a true emergency and may not be abused. Drivers of these vehicles are still obliged to observe the safety of their fellow road users and may only cross a red robot if it is safe to do so. According to the law, other vehicles should make way without endangering others, for the emergency vehicle carrying all the appropriate lights and sirens. In the Western Cape no politician may use blue lights on their vehicle. It is reserved for emergency vehicles only. The Justice Project South Africa is currently campaigning to have the use of blue lights for politicians declared unlawful. We asked readers what they think about the use of emergency lights by politicians and the local SAPS driving with it on permanently?

Mr Sekgwari Phasha said: Let the use of blue lights be for the police going to an emergency - not all the time. Maybe assign a different colour light to the politicians. Roads are for all citizens and everyone must be respected.

Ms Lebogang Koboyankwe said: Ive been a victim of that. They obstructed me two days ago at the Steelpoort robot. They just went in on the yellow line and drove right in front of me as I waited for the other cars to pass at the stop. The robots are not working now. They abuse their lights. We should all stop and so should they. If they use the lights they must be patient enough to let you get a suitable place where you can move away and let them pass, they should not just come and pressure you.

Ms Faith Mugivhi said: They must obey the rules like all of us. Politicians should not get preference because of their status. They dont need lights on their vehicles. Emergency vehicles should use it only in an emergency. With her are Mulanga and Punchu.

Mr Washington Mateyo, Mr Anthony Minjale and Mr M. Ngoma said: Whether they must have lights on their vehicles and be treated the same as emergency vehicles depends on who they are. That should be reserved only for the president, deputy president and ministers. Those top positions can be driven with cars carrying lights, but they should not endanger other people. The rest, mayors and MEC etc. must be like all other road users. Planning is important. They must leave early for their appointments. Being a minister or politician is not a passport for speeding. You should be an example.

Mnr Danr Ross s: Hulle moet kameras by ons robotte opsit en almal vang wat die ligte misbruik. Die politici moet soos die gewone ouens behandel word en die noodvoertuie soos die SAPS die ligte net gebruik in noodgevalle. By hom is Ethan. Ms Winnie Malatjie said: Politicians should be treated like everyone else. Emergency vehicles may use their lights only in an emergency. It is unfair to use lights to drive a person to an appointment for which they are late. They must leave on time. With her is Tshepo Malatjie.

Ms Cindy Topham and Ms Nikki Topham said: Politicians should learn. If you dont want to be late, leave on time. The police and emergency services only have different rules in case of an emergency, but in Burgersfort Ive seen the SAPS driving with their lights on the whole time. We think they just want to get through the traffic. You dont know when it is an emergency or not.

Me. Sina Jacobs s: Die padrels is daar vir almal. Nie net vir ons publiek nie. Hou die gebruik van ligte vir die nooddienste oppad na n noodgeval. Die ligte word misbruik.

Mr Thibedi Mamabolo said: Politicians may have cars with lights, but they are not emergency vehicles. To drive straight over a red light is unacceptable. They must also obey the rules of the road. When you go to a meeting you must leave early. We as the public also have appointments and emergencies, but cannot endanger others. With him is Mmakhudu Mamabolo.

Me. By haar is Mieke van Zyl.

First win for Maatlopo United

After losing 4-1 against Kingborn on Saturday 12 November, Maatlopo United FC redeemed themselves on Sunday when they defeated R.T. Giant Killers 5-1. This was the first win of the season for Maatlopo United. The inconsistence of our play is our main concern at present, said Mr Jimmy Makola, spokeman of the Maatlopo Team. Winning with a big margin and then losing with the same margin shows that the technical team still have a lot of work to be done. This week Saturday Maatlopo will host Leolo FC from GaMatodi at Ntoampe Stadium. The game will start at 15:00. All soccer lovers are encouraged to come and support the teams. The Nedbank Cup provincial play-offs will be taking place on 4 December at the Seshego Stadium. Maatlopo will represent the Sekhukhune District. They will compete with four other districts in Limpopo for a chance to advance. Enquiries: Jimmy Makola, 082 407 6226 or Sydney Makoka, 072 869 4418. (Compiled by Jimmy Makola).
