Part 2: Specialty exam To gain some appreciation of a candidates work experience, 30 supplementary questions are included in the test. These deal with work specialties in 3 main areas: Audio Television Transmitters 10 questions 10 questions 10 questions
Total:
30 questions
Normally these specialty questions do not count towards the final mark. However, in instances where the candidate fails but gets more than 52% on the general knowledge exam then, at the discretion of the manager, the candidates score on their related specialty questions (Audio, TV or Transmitters) can be included. If the combined mark (general knowledge & specialty) is 60% or greater then the candidate will be given a pass. The exam will be conducted online at a CBC location. A computer and a scientific calculator will be provided at that time. The candidate will be allowed to bring one lettersized sheet of paper containing whatever notes and/or formulae he or she chooses. This paper will be submitted along with the completed exam. How can you prepare for the exam? To give some familiarity with the type of questions used, we have provided one sample question from each of the categories. These questions are found in the appendix. The answer to each of the questions can be found at the end of the appendix The candidate may wish to review some or all of the material that he/she can expect to find in the exam. Many reference books are available in libraries and book stores that cover the required material. The following references will provide a good starting point. Please note that newer editions may be available: 1- Introductory Circuit Analysis (12th Edition, 2010) By Robert L. Boylstad; Charles E. Merrill Publishing Division of Bell and Howell Company 2- Electronic Principles (6th Edition, 1998) By Albert Paul Malvino; McGraw Hill Book Company 3- Basic TV Technology: Digital and Analog (4th Edition, 2005) By Robert L. Hartwig; Focal Press

Sample Questions
Answers: a) 14.7 mA b) 29.4 mA c) IRS depends on the value of RL and the hFE of the transistor d) 0 mA, because the Zener is the wrong polarity
In the following circuit what DC voltage is present at the Ve point with respect to ground? Note: Silicon transistor
If 0.5 Volts is applied at the input of the above circuit, what is the value of the output voltage? Assume +VCC = +15V and VCC = -15V.
4. POWER SUPPLIES
In this DC-DC converter what would be the effect if V1 or V2 is short-circuited (Transformer is Toroidal)
Answers: a) The circuit would stop oscillating and only restart when the short is removed b) One of the two power transistors would be destroyed c) The rectifying diodes would be destroyed d) Both the power transistors would blow
5. MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES
A two-channel oscilloscope provides two sweep modes (alternate and chop). When one looks at two signals in the range of 20 Hz to 2 kHz, it is better to use the chop mode because it permits both signals to be observed:
Answers: a) Simultaneously b) With more brightness c) With more measurement accuracy d) By minimizing focal error
