Timeline Presentation of an Influential Individual of the 1990s Grade Level/Subject: 4th- 5th Grade Social Studies/Language Arts Prerequisite

e Knowledge: Students will have background knowledge of the 1990s based on their social studies curriculum. Students will also have the ability to sequence time and events. Approximate time: Four, forty minute, class periods Student Objectives: During the lesson, the students will create a detailed timeline of an influential individual of the 1990s to go along with their social studies unit of the 1990s. The students will present their findings to their classmates through a timeline presentation created on Capzle. Illinois State Standards: 1.C: Comprehend a broad range of reading materials o 2.d: Summarize and make generalizations from content and relate to purpose of material 3.B: Compose well-organized and coherent writing for specific purposes and audiences o 2.b: Establish central idea, organization, elaboration, and unity in relation to purpose and audience 3.C: Communicate ideas in writing to accomplish a variety of purposes. o 2.a: write for a variety of purposes and for specified audiences in a variety of forms. o 2.b: Produce and format compositions for specified audiences using available technology 4.B: Speak effectively using language appropriate to the situation and audience o 2.a: Present oral reports to audience using correct language and nonverbal expressions for the intended purpose and message within a suggested organizational format 5.A: Locate, organize, and use information from various sources to answer questions, solve problems and communicate ideas o 2.b: Organize and integrate information from a variety of sources 5.B: Analyze and evaluation information acquired from various sources o 2.b: Cite sources used 5.C: Apply acquired information, concepts, and ideas to communicate in a variety of formats o 2.a: Create a variety of print and non-print documents to communication acquired information for specific audiences and purposes o 2.b: Prepare and deliver oral presentations based on inquiry or research

Materials: Attached handout for each student Computer and internet access for each pair of students SmartBoard/projector in computer lab Teacher prepared sample timeline www.capzles.com Procedures: Before teaching any lesson, be familiar on how to use the Capzle timeline application and have created a class account for students to save their presentations. Also, create a sample timeline to show students as an example. Lesson One Pair students up by either allowing them to choose to have partners pre-assigned. Take students to computer lab. Pass out the handout to each student and briefly explain the assignment. Explain to students that they are going to be creating a timeline of an influential individual of their choice from the 1990s. Tell students that they should use the provided sources as a guide to choose their individual as well as to guide their research. Give students approximately thirty minutes to start their research and to decide on an individual to study. Before leaving the computer lab, students need to have their individual approved. Write down the name of the individual that each pair is researching. Students should continue their research for homework. Lesson Two

Take students to the computer lab. Open up the prepared sample timeline on the SmartBoard for the students to see. Explain to students that their timeline should have a similar structure, but that they have freedom of how they present the information in the timeline. Remind students to follow guidelines and requirements for the presentation that were included in the handout. Also, show students how to log into Capzle using the log in information provide don the handout. Have students log into Capzle, once per pair. Demonstrate various components of the application, using the sample presentation as a guide. In the remaining twenty minutes, students should finish any research and start on their Capzle presentation. Allow students to play and practice with the various components of the application. By the end of the lesson, the students should have a title and a description of their project put into presentation. The title needs to be their researched individual, while the description needs to be the names of the pair working on the project. Before leaving the computer lab, students should be remind to save their work. Lesson Three Bring students to the computer lab. Tell students to complete their Capzle timeline during the forty minute class period. By the end of the lesson, the student should have their presentation completed. Remind students to save their work frequently and especially before they close out the program and leave the lab. Tell students that they will be presenting their timelines to the class during the next lesson. Lesson Four Bring students to the computer lab. Tell students that they do not need to use the computers and that they should not be touching them. Remind students that they will be showing the class their timeline and sharing their favorite/most important details of their influential person. Open up Capzle and the projector/SmartBoard for the presenting students to use. Have students click on their presentation. Allow students to show the rest of the class their timeline and to share some of the information that they have learned. The rest of the pairs should present their findings during the class period.

the 1990s. You can use your social studies textbook or the resources below to choose a person to research. Use the resources below as a guide to researching your chosen individual. Remember, since you will be creating a timeline, the WHEN IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT! While creating your presentation, please include: Why did you choose this particular individual? Where the person was born Where the person died (if applicable!) Where the person attended school, high school and or college What makes this individual influential At least three to five notable things the person has achieved in his/her lifetime Family life (siblings, marriages, children, parents, etc.) Any awards/honors that the person has earned Since we are not in the 1990s, what is this person doing today? Sources that you used

Reminders:
Timelines are in order, so 1995 should not come before 1991. Get your influential person approved by me before starting your project. Use appropriate internet behavior at all times. Do not simply copy information, but sum up the information and CITE. Save your work often. KEEP TRACK of this handout, otherwise doing your project may become difficult.
