Pepero Day

ovember 11th is a special date for Koreans. The eleventh of november is known as the Pepero Day. Pepero are a chocolate covered cookie sticks. Pepero brand belongs to the large conglomerate Lotte, which has all types of businesses, from manufacturers of food, to hotels, to amusement parks, restaurants, and financial companis. Some brilliant minds thought that since these sticks have a number 1 shape, the eleventh day of november (11-11) would be Pepero Day. No one

knows for sure whether if it was the marketing department of the brand, or some students in the city of Busan, but the fact is that since the mid-90s, Koreans give Pepero to friends, couples, and relatives. So, the origin is purely commercial, but over the years has taken large, everybody knows Pepero Day. Shops and stores sell big batches of gift based Pepero but also containing other sweet and tedddy bears. The event is so great that Lotte does about 55% of their Pepero business in

November every year. There are about 10 varieties of Pepero: almond chocolate, white chocolate, with fruit flavors... But Pepero Day is also a chance to release new limited edition with some other flavours and sizes. Of course, other brands of cookies and sticks promote and sell their own products. Everything is a great business that, unlike the recently commercialized events (Valentines Day, Christmas or Fathers Day or Mothers), came from nothing without any religious origin.

ISO Halloween Party!!!

Mike Gates

riday, November 4th was the big Halloween party at Mayqueen bar. It was a fun filled night with lots of wonderful music, Amazing drinks, and some sexy costumes!!! People got together to celebrate a strange holiday, but it didnt stop them from partying until 5am!! Mayqueen was beautifully and horrifically decorated to provide fun and thrills in the celebration of Halloween. The party started off a bit slow, but once the drinks were flowing, personalities started matching the characters that the people were wearing. I interviewed a few people about their ideas of the party! Stefani Lipa was dressed as a fairy and had a bLAST at the party!! She loved how the place looked, but felt the bar was a bit small for how many people were there. It was very hot inside and there was not much space to move, but it was still a lot of fun! I felt bad because I had to leave early to get up for the cheerleading competition. I wish ISO events werent always the night before a big school activity! She thought that ejin (red Teletubbie) and Sinhye (mangled neurosurgeon) had the best costumes. She also LOVED the drinks by mike Gates and thought he was the best bartender. Irene Ortega was also dressed as a fairy! She had a wonderful time dancing with everyone in the bar!! She was really impressed by the atmosphere of the bar and the great music from the first DJ, but DJ Jordi Sunxez was the BEST!! Her

favorite costume was the black Swan worn by monica Alvarado! She also loved the bartending skills of Mike Gates and his mean Tequila Sunrises! erwann Calvez came dressed as the stereotypical Frenchman with the stripped shirt, jacket, and buret. The costume was not complete without the Le monde newspaper (really a korean newspaper! HA). He had a spectacular time and enjoyed spending time with many people. He really liked the moves of the cheerleaders. He could not drink much due to the big soccer tournament the next day, but this did not keep him off the dance floor, as he was spotted with a plethara of beAuTIFuL girls!!! ;) His favorite costume was that of Lily Kim who was wearing black Swan!! He felt it was rather dark and hard to see and that there was not enough advertising or notice for the party! His favorite bartenders included Graziella Hippodam and mike Gates! Overall it was a fun night that he wont forget!! Sorry if you missed out on the fun, but this was just a taste of the action!! be sure to come to all of ISOs events as they are ALWAYS filled with excitement and GreAT people!!! :D

The First Movie Night

Finally, first Movie Night was held 26th of October. Thankfully, there were more people than expected, more than 100 because we prepared crepes for 130 people but some who came late couldnt eat. It was French Movie Night and the movie was The Spanish Apartment. We decided to choose this movie because the story is about exchange students life in another country, about friendship, about love, about relationships in general, their good and bad moments, the positive side and the negative side of that amazing and must-doexperience that you all guys are living! After the movie there was the Culture Shock Event, and a student from America received bang and Olufsen headphone for his story about soju! The second movie night is comming soon! 30th of this month! Please participate in the amazing events such as OX game, story event, lottery which give iPod shuffle and buffet coupons! Be the winner for the amazing prizes.

Exchange Students Fieldtrip to Hwaseong and Paintball

For the exchange students field trip we went to HwaSeong village. Once there, some people left to the hills to have a walk while the others remained there and experienced some traditional games. Though it was cold after raining, rain added a special charm to the colorful autumnal leaves. Suddenly, one of our students left the trail and started to cut through the woods. All of us told him that he was crazy but we followed him. Climbing up the hill everyone was hurt from the thorns and screaming. But anybody couldnt deny that it was so funny! After this we had lunch and then we ran off to the paintball game place with expectations. We made two teams, European team and Asian team. It was a REAL WAR, not a game. We could feel the tension in the air. Everyone were so serious and tried to fight strategically to win. Even the owner of the place told us that we were not playing the game, we were too serious as if we had been in a real war. After finishing the war we saw a beautiful sunset and took some photos at the bank of the sea which was next to the war place. We were so tired but we all had an amazing time altogether!

Buddy Day 2

Yang Pyeong Kim-chi Making Festival

For the second Buddy Day, while some people went to Su-rak mountain, we went to Yang-Pyeong for the kimchi Festival. Just so you know, Kimchi is the most representative Korean food made with cabbage. Everyone gathered at 8, early morning. Right after we got there, we went to fishing with the cultivator like carriage. We had to take our shoes off and go into the water when it was freezing cold. After we caught some fishes, we ate bossam (Korean style pork). It was delicious as it was countrysides style of cooking. After lunch, we finally went to make kimchi. We cut the radish and mixed the radish with all the ingredients. And then we put the source we made into the cabbage. Theres a old Korean saying that if you make a pretty kimchi, you will have a pretty baby, so I tried my best to make a pretty and nice looking kimchi. But ended up with ugly ones haha. A lot of exchanging students from different countries experienced real Korean culture by making Kimchi in the countryside. After this, we played a Korean traditional game called Gul-Long-Swe. We also made rice cake by hammering the cooked rice. Just made and hot rice cakes were so delicious. After eating it, we also ate the trout we caught. We were so full but happy. It was such an amazing experience! After this long day we got really close and became REAL buddies.

Surak Mountain Most of our team members decided to go hiking. When we arrived at the station, there were a lot of hikers. Happily, the weather was so wonderful. Not having had breakfast, some people got so hungry and tired out that we couldnt go to the top. We regretted not having brought any food...The way to descend was very rough, however, it was challenging and made us help each other and cooperate. After hiking, we ate lunch at pocha(sort of food stalls) -and drunk also ;P. Even though it wasnt just easy, we had a lot

A Letter from Paris...

By Joninho

Bonjour!!!

Hufs ISOerrrrS!!!! As you guys usually dont know, my middle name is Joninho, the same writer of Letter from milan last month. On 05th Nov. 2011 we, European ISOers(,, ,,)had a secret meeting called ISO reunion In Paris!!! First of all, All we have to say is just The reunion was big crazy fun. You cannot imagine how we enjoyed, how we hung out with!!!! For purpose of making ISOers feel jealous , I created an event named secretly on FaceBook in September. As time goes by, two weeks before the ISO reunion In Paris I felt so excited every morning singing Oh Champselysees At that time, I wanted to tell this : Time crawls! . It was hard for me to wait two weeks for !!! even though time crawls, the time passes!!! Fi-

nally 05th november came to me! I boarded on a plane with the most famous French vodka, Grey Goose that costs about 40 Euros and a flight ticket to Paris singing Oh Champs-elysees

DAY-1 About 2 hours later, I touched French earth hugging & kissing(In the way of French greeting, Please dont misunderstand the kissing) 4 european ISOers tight ! we headed to s Taiwan friend house where we enjoyed our party overnight. As soon as

we arrived home, and started to prepare dinner that was fried chicken for us. made a rum&Coke for me , did nothing and I started to make a big shout. After delicious meal, Our party time started opening the bottle of Grey Goose up! I taught them a special song for Alcohol named Alcohol Song. This song is Magic. because if Someone who can drink just oneshot sings this magic song, the one can drink 10 shot clapping ones hand. Therere 3 versions, Spanish, Italian and Korean(I made it myself for Korean). I let you know guys what it is, In Spanish, Alcohol~, Alcohol~, AlcoholAlcoholAlcohol~, Hemos venido a emborracharnos, el resultado nos da igual~~. In Italian,Bevo~Bevo~,BevoBe voBevo~,mi ubriaco, son felice, anche se poi vomito~. In Korean, ~~ ~ , , !

Our intelligent europeon ISOers absorbed the 3 versions of Alcohol song immediately. I really felt proud of them and I became more excited!!! So we voiced up the song clapping and laughing overnight! We talked so much a lot about our own worry, problem, happiness and future. And finally like I sang the song I vomited with full of thrilling!!! That was the best vomit Ive ever had! Whiiiihaaaa But I cannot remember nearly what I said while drinking because I concentrated too much on teaching The Alcohol song to them. But others told me that the reason I cannot remember was just I drunk too much. I dont believe that until now, but partly its true, I drunk too much. Anyway I concentrated on teaching. DAY-2 next day I found myself lying on my face on the house floor!!! What a shame on them! As you know, In Europes house they can put on their shoes and walking with

shoes!!! So as soon as I woke up, I shouted!!! What the hell did you guys do to me???? vaFFanCulo@@@ Anyway, like yesterday dinner, prepared delicious brunch for us. Finishing the brunch, We headed to Avenue des Champs-elyeeses singing Oh Champs-elyeeses!. The Champs-Elyseeses is very big!!! I was so impressed by that scenery!!! It was full of beauty and of elegance. Because of my flight schedule, we hurried our footsteps. Weve been to Montmartre hill, la seine river and Tour de Eiffel. Gratefully, they took so many pics of me like Mom jejejeje. Immagine that moms wanting to take a pic of her young son when they go to a picnic~~~Thank you Guys!!! When the time of farewell came to us, we hugged & kissed tight again. I felt so sad. Sad. Sad. Sad. On the airplane I sang again Oh Chams-elyseeses but that song came to my ears with full

of sadness. I got to know The city, Paris is so beautiful but I came to know our friendship is more beautiful than Paris. Love you guys!

The other Korea

O
ne of the first questions you get asked as a foreigner in Korea is (aside from the usual question on boyfriend/girlfriend) is what places youve visited in the country. And we all know the standard answers: Busan, Kyongju, Cheju-do these are some of the places you should make sure to check off your list before leaving Korea. But for those curious on the less-known sights of Korean culture, and daring to take the road less travelled, there is a well-hidden secret in northern China.

Benjamin Katzeff Silberstein rean classes taught me to use to make my first ajumma friends by simply asking for directions in Korean. For those travelling to Yanji due to curiosity in north Korea, a visit to the Korean fish market is a must. There, countless Korean ladies sell fresh and dried fish mostly originating from the north Korean port city of rajin. Being Chinese citizens, these ladies dont even need visas to travel freely on the north Korean countryside. Many of them stay with relatives on the other side of the river during their visits, making them perhaps the best witnesses to north Korean reality that we in the outside world will ever have access to, aside from actual North Korean people. All over the city, used North Korean books are sold for cheap prices, and overall, one cannot go very far without stumbling upon something exported from North Korea. Simply hiring a driver and going along the border is worth the flight to Yanji. When looking over the border from South Korea, all you will see is a heavily militarized area that is also very far away from where youre standing. In Yanji, the only divide between you and the north Korean countryside is a river and a fence. Perhaps needless to say, travelling there is well worth both the time and the money.

out history, the area has at times been closely integrated with the Korean peninsula. As recently as during the Japanese occupation of both Korea and northeastern China, many Koreans moved to the area, being drawn there by promises of cheap arable land and prospects of a better life.

Only the Tumen river divides this part of China from the Korean peninsula, making it the close relationship of the two regions easily comprehensible. Close to 40 % of the inhabitants of Yanbian are ethnically Korean. had the chance to talk with an Amazing person, Jazlyn Sin. Jazlyn is from Singapore, a small country that not many people are familiar with. Singapore is a beautiful country known for its diversity of cultures, languages, and architectual styles. One can find a variety of flora, fauna, and interesting trees along the roadways and all over the counry, denoting it as a garden city. Singapore is often referred to as The Little red Dot beacause it is such a small geographic country in Southeast-Asia. The capital of Singapore is Singapore. With its small size, they did not want to make things difficult (LOL). Singapore has a population of about 5 million people made up of four different races. These include Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian. The majority of the population consists of Chinese (74%) followed by the Malays (13%), Indians (9%), and Eurasians (4%). Singapore has 4 national languages due to the multi-culturalism. english and mandarin are the two main languages spoken, but people also use malay and Tamil. Therefore, most Singaporeans are bilingual. They often speak Singlish (a mix of english and Mandarin). Examples include, ok la, whateverlo, and so easy hor. Now lets talk to Jazlyn! Mike: What is your favorite food?

Jazlyn: my favorite food is chili crab. This dish is composed of mud crabs that are stir-fried in a semi-thick, sweet and savoury tomato and chili based sauce. Other common foods include, Laksa, a spicy noodle soup from the Peranakan culture (a merger of Chinese and malay elements). Another popular dish is Satay, marinated and skewered, grilled meat served with peanut sauce and Ketupat (rice dumpling). These foods ave spicy so I believe many Koreans would also enjoy them!

ful restaurants, bars, and retail shops along with walking by the Singapore River. You should also visit the Merlion, an archetypal symbol of Singapore (composed of a lions head and a fishs body). Mike: What is your typical day like? Jazlyn: I like to stay cool by going to Orchard road and visiting shopping centers. I also enjoy just hanging out with my friends by the river and going to cafes. We love seeing the lights of the city as we dine out at the various restaurants and relaxing bars. I like to live and relax.
