INTRODUCTION. The Savari oil Expeller is a rugged machine, designed and manufactured to demanding technical specifications in order to guarantee trouble free and economic operation. The machine is suitable for small scale oil processing enterprises and is well adopted for rural operations. This machine has been found suitable for the processing of the following oil seeds: Sunflower, Simsim, Coconuts, Groundnuts, Moringa Oleifera (Mlonge), Neem (muarobaini), Pumpkin, Castor ]atrofa and many others.

$TRUCTURAL SPECIFICATIONS. The Sayari oil expeller is composed of the following parts: The main body is made out of high quality mild sheet of 1.5mm thickness and forms the main seed hopper and also contains the machine drive components. It is stiffened with thick section angle bars to ensure structural rigidity and integrity. The cage assembly is made out 20mm thick plate configured to take the large force arising from the compression process. The cage assembly contains cage

bars with appropriate spacing for ease of extraction of expelled oil and also houses the screw shaft, which transfers seed from the hopper to the compression chamber for oil eh'traction. The screw shaft and cone adjustment assembly comprises of a shaft assembled with screws and cones of various sizes designed to effect optimum extraction. TWs also enables the adjustment of the gap which determines the cake size and consequently the extraction efficiency (See Figure 1)

INSTALLI.\TION OF OIL EXPELLER. EnlIine Driven: The diesel engine mounted to the frame should be secured by 300mm long foundation bolts. The engine should be selected so as to drive the expeller pulley according to the required working speed of the screw shaft which is 38 to 43 rPID. The tightness of the drive belts should be adjusted appropriately so as to ensure no excessive slippage of the v-belts which nonnally reduces efficiency.

Motor Driven: The motor should be mounted on a heavy metal frame, which is well leveled. The motor and machine pulley should be aligned so that the drive belts are in a straight line. The direction of rotation of the motor should conform to the drive requirement for the expeller. Expeller: In order to ensure good performance of the expeller various inspections should be done: (i) Diesel engine/electrical motor should be selected to drive the expeller and equipped with a pulley according to working speed of expeller which is 3843 RPM

(ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi)

The expeller should be fixed on a compact base. The tension of the chain should be appropriately adjusted. Clamps for the lower and upper cage assembly should be well tightened. The screw shaft should move freely in the cage assembly. Bearings and other lubricated parts should be well greased, ensuring that the lubricants arc filled to the required level. Grease for the cone adjustment nipple should be high temperatures grease

OPERATION OF THE OIL E,XPEUER. 1.0 PRE-OPERATION:

Before operating the machines the following should be carried out: 1.1 weller: (i) Ensure all loose parts in the machine are checked and re-tightened, making sure that the tightness of V-belts are properly adjusted. (ii) Ensure the lubricated parts, oil and other accessories are filled accordingly .. (iii) Sieve the seeds and remove stones, sand, metals and other foreign matter. (iv) The seeds should be sufficiently dry.

1.2 (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) 1.3 (i) (ii) (Hi) 2.0

Diesel Engine: Check oil level and refill it according to manufactures specifications. All screws and bolts and other subassemblies of the engine should be checked for proper tightness. Check cooling water system and refill the reserve tank to the required level. Observe all the instructions as instructed by the Engine Manufacturer. Electrical Motor: Check all controls and accessible parts of the motor. Check the tension of the V-belts and adjust accordingly. Check loose parts of the motor and fix them. OPERATION Start the engine/motor; it should run 2 - 6 minutes without load. The procedure of e"'Pelling is as follows: (i) Fill up enough cakes in the machine, and run so as to warm up the cage assembly. (ii) Fill up cakes and sieved seeds together make sure it has sufficiently warmed up the cage assembly. (iii) Introduce sieved seed in the hopper and the process begins. (iv) Observe the amount of oil expelled in the tray. In case of expelling insufficient oil, adjustment of screw shaft should be done by decreasing gape between cone and collar ring, similarly when there is a build up of cake in the cage assembly; the screw shaft should be adjusted by increasing the gap between last cone and the collar ring. The adjustment will depend upon the type and hardness of the seeds.

MONITORING

When the Engine is running smoothly the following should be observed: -3/7/98 (i) Abnormal sound. (ii) Heating of the engine. (iii) Abnormal vibrations. When the expeller is in the operation, the following should be monitored: (i) Over load situations e-g cake stacking in the cage. (ti)Excessive temperature of the motor lengine. (iii) Abnormal squeaking sounds. (iv) The type of cake being produced in quantity and quality.
vr nAILY MAINTENANCE POINTS FOR OPERATING THE Et,(PELLER. 1.1 ENGINE:

DaiJy maintenance of the E'qJeller engine should be as stipulated in the suppliers operations and maintenance manual. (Read the engine-operating manual carefully before operating this machine).
1.2 MOTOR:
(i)

Check all nipples in the motor and grease them. (ii)Check the loosen screws, covers and other parts, fL'( them. (tiOClear away the dusts, cakes and others from the motor.
1.3 EXPELLER:

(i) Check all accessible nipples, lubricating the points properly and the chains oil tray should be up to level. (ii)Check the tension of the chain.

(ill) The accumulated cakes at the expeller outlet should be cleared frequently in order to keep the outlet unblocked.
\lTT

SAFETYRULESFOR OPERATION: (i) Operator should be thoroughly familiar with controls of the machine. (ii) Every flywheel and every moving part of a machine must be secured and protected by a safety cage (Hi) Every part of the transmission and machinery moving parts must be securely protected. (iv) The operations room should be weB ventilated and pro\-ided with security appliances for fire fighting, first aid box etc (v) Do not allow any person surrounding the machine when running. (vi) All working tools should be kept away when starting the machine and when in operation. (vii) Lubricating oils should be kept away from extraction room. (viii) Operators should not wear loose clothes when operating the machine. (ix) Operator should not attempt any repair when the machine is running. (x) Operator should not be away from the machine when running. (xi) Do not use metal pieces to push seeds into the chamber.
