India Manufacturing Excellence Awards (IMEA)

Considering manufacturing organizations as engineered systems which creates value for customers, Manufacturing Excellence is the imperative tool to deliver competitive advantage and enhance the value-creation flow to the customers. From a closed and protected economy until 1991, today India is seen as a potential manufacturing hub for many global giants. Manufacturers have been constantly employing new methodologies and approaches to keep up with ever-increasing customer requirements and the agile global competition in the market. India Manufacturing Excellence Awards (IMEA) was conceptualized and instituted by Frost & Sullivan in 2004 to support companies in their journey towards building a competitive and lean organization. With effect from 2009, Frost & Sullivan and The Economic Times have collaborated to jointly host the India Manufacturing Excellence Awards. With a mission to recognize the Indian Manufacturing capability and assess its Global Competitiveness, IMEA has a robust, highly acclaimed and constantly updated assessment process in place derived from the best global manufacturing practices. Being the only one of its kind in India, IMEA has, over the years, increasingly received the reputation of being an independent, unbiased and credible evaluation of supply chain efficiencies with respect to their leanness and flexibility. Why IMEA? India Manufacturing Excellence Awards is designed not only to recognize the best manufacturing facilities in India but also to map manufacturing capabilities and highlight areas for improvements through an objective and well-structured assessment process. The assessment is designed to identify answers to the following questions Where does the facility stand on the global manufacturing scale? How do they fare compared to other companies in their own sector? Is the operations and supply chain efficient to meet customers requirement? Is the organization aligned to a culture of continuous improvement? How robust and efficient are the manufacturing systems in the organization? What are the improvement areas across different functions? Are you aware of what it takes to be counted as being amongst the best?

To promote emphasis on the sustenance, this year we have introduced a new band of awards that would recognize companies that have sustained manufacturing excellence over a period of time. Please
Assessment Methodology The strength of The Economic Times - India Manufacturing Excellence Award lies in its unique Site Assessment Methodology designed by Frost & Sullivan. The Manufacturing Excellence model judges companies on 14 factors and is scored on a maximum of 1200 points (12 factors assigned 100 points each and two others: Process Complexity and Leadership Commitment - are considered qualitatively during awardees selection). 1. 3. 5. 7. Focus on Customer 2. Scheduling Systems Orderliness, Safety & Environment 4. Visual Controls Asset Care 6. Operational Flexibility Internal Competence 8. Innovation Adaptation 10. Layout & Material Handling 9. Quality Systems System 11. Inventory Management 12. Supply Chain 13. Process Complexity 14. Leadership Commitment These factors are globally known to reflect facilities progress towards flexibility and leanness. The model is based on 255 pre-graded checkpoints (points of assessment) on the above-mentioned elements, which chart a facilitys journey from start to near world class. The assessor maps the facilitys current standing on a World Class map.

At the end of the assessment, the score for the facility will be generated on the assessment model and opportunities for improvement will be shared with the management team. Industry specific comparisons will also be shared during closing feedback session, in perspective of the comparative averages of the Top 3 and Bottom 3 scoring companies of IMEA 2010. In addition to feedback on Supply Chain and Operation efficiencies, we shall also map Organizations Strategic Planning and Implementation Ability and compare with other companies in the same sector.
