Please make a copy and keep it in a safe place. Please read before unpacking your software.
MaxSea is powerful electronic chart display software. Except for some countries (as it is the case for FRANCE), an electronic chart is NOT intended to be used as a substitute for paper navigational charts issued by official authorities and required by international maritime laws. Only official government charts and Notices to Mariners contain all information needed for the safety of navigation, and as always, the captain is responsible for their prudent use. MaxSea International does not guarantee the availability and/or the accuracy of the updated daily FORECAST files issued by MaxSea Chopper. Weather forecast files are NOT intended to be used as a substitute for weather information issued by official weather offices. In addition, Tides and Tidal current data come from a variety of sources. MaxSea International does not guarantee the accuracy of values. You need to keep in mind that values derived and displayed on the screen are predictions only and are NOT intended to be used as a substitute for observed data of International Oceanography Centers. Usage of MaxSea implies knowledge and acceptance of this warning by the user. This is a legal agreement between you (either as individual or entity), the end user, and MaxSea International. If you do not agree to the terms of this Agreement, promptly return the CD ROM package and the accompanying items (including written materials and binders or other containers) to the place you obtained them for a full refund. MaxSea Software Licensing

There are three different methods of licensing a copy of MaxSea: a Software Key (no Dongle), a parallel Dongle, or a USB Dongle. Using Software key (Virtual Dongle) If you have decided to license MaxSea with a software-based key, the software registration routine is started when MaxSea is first installed. There are a number of ways to register your software and get the Site Key:

You can access the Internet, this is the fastest way to activate your software. You can use email activation first time by sending your request, after receiving your Site Key, you will have to enter it with using the Manual Activation system. You can ask for a Site Key to your dealer or to our services providing both your Serial Number and Site Code (if you choose the Manual Activation, the Site Code appears in the Manual Activation dialog and you can copy it to clipboard).

IMPORTANT The Site Key registration only has to be done one time per installation. If you have to install your program again on the same or another computer, MaxSea International allows you to store your licence on our servers to retrieve it later. Please refer to Installation Help chapter to learn more on how Getting the Site Key to register your MaxSea software. Using a Hardware key (Dongle) Why to use a Dongle ? - A Dongle allows MaxSea to be installed on any number of computers for backup and planning purposes. MaxSea can be run on a home/office computer and on the computer on the boat with only one license. Another advantage is that with a Dongle, re-installing MaxSea is trivial. If a computer crashes or a MaxSea re-install is necessary, there is no worry about obtaining new licenses for MaxSea or for any charts licensed to that dongle. Without a Dongle, a software license which would require activation is needed just like the newest Microsoft products. If MaxSea is not uninstalled properly and the special uninstall serial number is not recorded, or if the hard drive crashes and an uninstall MaxSea is not possible, then the ability to reinstall the software on another computer will be lost. In other words, with the software-only license, there is the possibility that the MaxSea license might be lost and the software might have to be repurchased.

Getting Started

If You Have a Parallel Dongle (25-Pin Connector) With the computer turned off, plug the parallel dongle you received with MaxSea into the parallel port on the computer. (This is often where a printer cable is plugged in.) The dongle is a pass-through connector which allows simultaneously connecting a printer. Simply plug the dongle in first, and then plug the printer cable into the Dongle. IMPORTANT - Make sure the computer is turned OFF when plugging or unplugging a parallel Dongle. If You Have a USB Dongle, Do not plug the USB dongle into the computer until after MaxSea has been installed. Once MaxSea is installed, the USB dongle may be plugged and unplugged with the PC power on. Tip The USB dongle which is shipped out with MaxSea will work with USB hubs (small boxes that add more USB ports to a computer). Note, however, that many USB-to-serial adapters will not work properly when connected to a hub. Also, some USB to serial connectors do not transmit NMEA data: make sure your connector is NMEA compliant. Test your hardware configuration before you leave the dock. More information about serial adapters can be found in the Connecting a GPS section.

Upgrading Your Existing MaxSea

IMPORTANT - If it is the first time you install MaxSea, please proceed to the step Installing MaxSea". If you are already running a version of MaxSea, follow these instructions to upgrade your software. 1. Backup MaxSea data stored in your MY DOCUMENTS folder: It is strongly recommended that you backup your MY DOCUMENTS folder on a regular basis - and especially before upgrading. PC's often include a built-in CD-burner (CDR drive). This is probably the most convenient way to backup your data. Files which store any tracks and marks as well as logbook data are found in the "MY DOCUMENTS | My MaxSea" repertory. Exclude your charts from the files chosen to backup. Charts typically take up a lot of space, and can be restored if necessary from their installation CD. 2. Uninstall a previous MaxSea Version to free space on your hard disk MaxSea version inferior to 10 Select ADD/REMOVE programs from the Windows Control Panel found under "START | SETTINGS" menu. Select the MaxSea entry and click on the CHANGE/REMOVE button. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the software. Other MaxSea version IMPORTANT - If your previous version worked with a software license, you must install the new version in the same folder. Never manually delete the "MaxSea" folder.

Insert the MaxSea CD-ROM. If the installation screen does not appear, open up My Computer and right click on your CD-ROM drive, then select Auto Run from the menu. Click on Installation, choose your language, and follow the instructions on the screen. Three options are displayed: Modify, Repair, Remove. Select Remove and click Next and follow the instructions on screen.

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

3. Restart your computer. 4. Continue with the next step: "Installing the Software"

Installing MaxSea
IMPORTANT - if there are any devices connected to a serial port (ISDN or cable modem, power management device, Palm Pilot synch, etc.), disconnect them. (These can be reconnected after MaxSea is run for the first time.) Pay attention to your CD ROM, the main reason that installation fails is that the CD ROM is dirty. 1. 2. 3. Insert the MaxSea installation CD. Windows appear which will guide you through the installation process. The first window presents three choices. Click on Installation Routine. Next, a typical install screen will show. Keep clicking Next and answering questions when prompted until the installation routine is complete. In most cases, all of the defaults may be accepted. The software, some basic charts, and the User Guide have now been installed. Restart your computer if prompted to do so. If you have a USB dongle (hardware key), now is the time to plug it into your computer. Windows will find it, and ask for drivers. Accept the prompts and the drivers will automatically be loaded.

4. 5.

MaxSea is ready to run. There are several ways to start MaxSea, you can run MaxSea by double clicking on the MaxSea icon on the computers desktop or click Start | Programs | MaxSea menu. When you start the program for the first time, the Software Key Activation Manager main screen appears either if you have forgotten to plug the Dongle into your computer or if you are using a Software Key licensing. Learn more in the Help software on how to license the Software with a Software-Based Key

Updating Configuration Codes

First time you run MaxSea, the "ConfigurationCodes Internet " dialog warns you that the Internet connection starts to search updating codes on our server and following process will be done: 1. If your computer is connected, the configuration codes are automatically downloaded and installed through Internet using the "ConfigurationCodes Internet " process. This process will automatically start up if Software Key license or Dongle failure is detected. If your computer is not connected to the Internet, "Error 203" appears and warns you that Internet connection has failed. Message asks for searching the (*.mxconfig) file that was given by your dealer or sent by email. However if your computer is not connected to the internet and you only have Dongle update codes, Dongle update codes (Code 1 and Code 2 and Code 3) were given to upgrade your software by your dealer on a specific paper sheet or by email; You will use in this case the "ConfigurationCodes Manual".

2.

3.

Note: On rare occasions MaxSea has detected that the Hardware key and software do not match together, so the DongleUpdate Program is automatically activated and you may update the Dongle codes as follows below. Display the splash screen to quickly retrieve your Dongle or licence number and also the Code1. Choose "About..." in the "Help" menu.
1. 2. 3. 4. Make sure you dont have any programs running. Go to the Windows Start menu. Click on Programs. Click on MaxSea Utilities.

10

Getting Started

5. 6.

If your computer is connected to the Internet or if you , click on " ConfigurationCodes Internet". Codes are automatically installed. However if your computer is not connected to the Internet, click on ConfigurationCodes Manual. Enter the three codes that you were given to upgrade your software, and click OK.

Connecting a GPS receiver

In most cases, connecting a GPS to a computer is straightforward, and is accomplished by simply connecting the serial cable supplied by the GPS manufacturer to the serial port on the PC. The serial port is a nine-pin male port on the back of the computer often identified by an IOIOI symbol. Serial to USB Cables Recent computers especially notebooks or tablet PCs may not include a serial port. One can be added using a serial-to-USB adapter cable available from a MaxSea distributor, computer store, or online computer store. Adapters manufactured by KeySpan or Fitstream are preferred. Connection Details The PC's serial port (RS 232 type input/output port on COM1) is used for data acquisition. Connect the GPS to this port using the appropriate cable. This serial port must comply with RS 232 type electrical characteristics, a standard compatible with most marine electronics. The connection of a GPS to the computer is usually a 2-wire connection with a NMEA 183 output from the GPS to input (RxD) and ground (Gnd) pins of the computer. IMPORTANT - If your GPS has a RS 422 type connection, the following process cannot be used (you will need a RS422 to RS232 converter). Please contact your dealer. Installing Charts
When using Maptech, NDI, or Softcharts charts, we recommend you to create a CHARTS folder under My Documents, and copying the charts from the CD into this folder. Maptech BSB4 charts need to be activated using the Setup program found on each chart CD. Mapmedia MM2 charts use an installer that makes automatically a folder called Mapmedia .mm2 in My Document. NOAA USA raster charts DVD uses an installer that makes automatically a folder called BSB_ROOT in My Documents. ARCS charts are installed from the MaxSea Utilities and create their own directories. C-Map CM/93 charts are installed from MaxSea Utilities. C-Map NT charts are installed using the tools on the C-Map CD NTPC Selector. To open Charts in MaxSea, simply choose Open Charts in the File menu and select the charts you want to open. IMPORTANT - If you install Mapmedia charts v1, Mapmedia MM2, Mapmedia 3D bathy data or Mapmedia Tidal Currents data, you have to license the corresponding data. To register data, close MaxSea, go to the Windows Start menu. Click on Programs. Click on MaxSea Utilities and choose "ConfigurationCodes Internet". Codes are automatically installed if you computer is connected to Internet. If no connection is available, "Error 203" appears and warns you that Internet connection has failed. Message asks for searching the (*.mxconfig) file that was given by your dealer or sent by email.

If this is the first time you run MaxSea, select and open Mapmedia CD300, which is a 1:10 million scale World Chart. More detailed charts will be necessary for navigation; the CD300 chart provides a convenient zoomed-out view of the world, and a good platform on which to practice. MaxSea will display a world chart. You are now on the MaxSea desktop. The main desktop components are highlighted below in the chart desktop environment chapter.

Desktop Environment

Looking at the Chart Desktop

MaxSea opens into a familiar charting environment (Figure below). MaxSea will display many different types of charts simultaneously. The charts are ordered according to their geographical position and their scale of representation. Let's take a brief tour around the MaxSea Chart Desktop:

14

Getting Started

The Chart Desktop (1) is the open window and consists of six parts:

The Chart Window is docked to the top of the open window, as above, by default. The datum, type of chart and scale are displayed in the MaxSea/Chart title bar WGS84], [Raster 1:25 million]. Several chart windows can be opened at the same time. The GPS/vessel symbol (6) is drawn in each open chart window that contains the vessels position. It indicates the boat position displayed on the chart at the point currently indicated by the GPS system connected to the PC. The Menu bar (2) organizes a number of drop-down menus which configure and manage MaxSea data, setups, and presentation. The Chart Toolbar (3) contains a series of buttons which toggle on/off or select different functions in the software. If a button is grayed out, the function is present but currently disabled, if a button is not present, the corresponding module has not been purchased. The Toolbar (5) is the tools control center. Each tool does a specific job and can be chosen with a left click of the mouse. The plot tool is configured here, screen palette chosen, and Full Screen Mode toggled on/off. The Cursor Data Palette (7) displays, regardless of active tool, data relative to the vessels position. By default this palette is displayed on the right or docked to the edge of the software window. Data information is latitude, longitude, Depth (if sounder is enabled), Route (course,

Electronic Charts Overview

Charts Overview
MaxSea is compatible with electronic charts from a number of publishers. Some require that their charts be installed with a setup program included on their chart disk, other charts can be opened directly from the CD or from the hard disk when copied. License codes are used in most cases to unlock charts for individual system use. There are two chart format types; raster and vector. Raster Charts use bitmapped (scanned) data to reproduce paper charts. Raster images consist of thousands of tiny dots that together make a flat digital image. MaxSea geographically references these scanned images, ensuring accurate display of positional information: Advantages:

Appearance similar to that of paper charts Easy to install and view Raster charts look nicest at certain scales Detailed information is not always available concerning an individual object (i.e. a buoy)

Disadvantages:

25

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

Labels and information cannot be changed (as changing depth units) There is no way to hide or add information on the chart

Vector Charts use intelligent data to build the chart display. It is held in layers and records all chart features, such as coastlines, buoys, lights, etc. These features and their attributes (position, color, size, shape, etc.) are stored in a database that allows them to be selectively displayed. Vector charts are very accurate at their reference scales (as long as they are not over-zoomed), but can appear quite different from traditional paper charts. Advantages:

Charts do not degrade with zooming Depth units can be changed Details on the chart can be hidden, making it less cluttered Specific Objects on a chart (i.e. buoys) can be clicked for information Vector charts can be difficult to install Appearance is very different than paper charts If a vector chart is magnified beyond its reference scale, it does not appear less detailed than a normal scale, but is in fact much less accurate. Vector charts are not considered as reliable as raster charts

Disadvantages:

Included in this "Getting Started" manual are brief instructions on how to install various chart types. Please refer to the HELP menu in MaxSea for complete details on working with charts.

The following table provides a quick reference for coverage, chart type and installation type for various charts. Specific details about each chart type can be found later in this guide, and also in the on-line help system.

Opening Charts
The software is compatible with cartographic data from several publishers. This data may be in vector or raster format, saved on hard disk or CD-ROM. Opening a Chart on the HardDisk To open a chart, select [Open chart...] from the [File] menu. MaxSea automatically searches and displays a dialog which lists all available charts stored on your computer hard disk and on externals support such as CD Rom, Cartridges, via Ethernet, etc... The first time, a warning box will appear about the use of digitized charts and documents. Click Accept if you agree.

Choosing Chart Scale

MaxSea will display all of your raster charts even if they are from different chart publishers seamlessly in the same window. This allows you to navigate without having to worry about opening up individual charts. When you zoom in and out using raster charts, MaxSea will automatically display the best chart available at that scale. When zoomed-out, MaxSea will show you which charts are available in greater detail with a pink border. The scale of a chart can be changed in several ways: 1 - Using the Magnifying tool Near the top of the Toolbar is a Magnifying glass button. This is the Chart Scale Selection Tool. Click on it once. Move the tool to the center of the area in which the new chart will open. Left click to Zoom Out. Hold down the left mouse button while drawing a selected area, and release the button to zoom in. 2 - Using the "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" tools Clicking the "Zoom Out" tool on the Toolbar (Magnifying glass with a minus sign) zooms out. Clicking the "Zoom In" tool on the Toolbar (Magnifying glass with a plus sign) zooms in. 3 - Using the mouse wheel (if available) to zoom in and zoom out 4 - Using the Scale Drop Down menu from the Right Context Click Menu

27

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

Right-click in the chart window to bring up the Scale drop down menu from the right click context menu, even if there is another tool selected. Working with Navigation Tools

Waypoints & Routes

There are two types of routes that can be displayed on the chart; the Planning Route and the Active Route. The difference between the two is simple. An Active Route is one that MaxSea is following while you are underway. A Planning Route will not be followed but at any given time you can work on it. This chapter and the following ones "Planning Route" and "Active Route" explain briefly how to create a route (using the Route tool or the Waypoint tool). In the Active Route paragraph you will learn how to activate a route and follow it on the chart. MaxSea offers you functions which are both simple, yet much more powerful than the traditional navigational tools.

29

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

Use the Plotting Tool (Pencil) selected on a Waypoint layer to plot as many Waypoints as you wish on the chart.

Use "Go To " tool to create a Quick Route and activate it

Use the Route tool to build a Planning Route and make sure to Double-click on this tool before creating a new route to ensure that there are no routes that are currently "selected."

You can work on a Planning Route while following an Active Route.

Planning Route
MaxSea enables you to create a Planning Route by placing and linking together several Waypoints on the chart. A Planning Route will not be followed, so you can create and work with a Planning Route while following an Active Route. IMPORTANT -When starting to plot a new Planning Route, be sure that no Planning Route is already displayed upon the chart; if a Planning Route is already displayed double-click upon the Route tool in the Toolbar to unselect existing Planning Route, then start to plot new Planning Route. Note: Routes are automatically stored in the Routes Centers. To call up the Routes Center select [Centers] from the [Route] menu and choose [Routes]

30

Getting Started

Fig.1 You can easily plot a route on the chart using the Route tool. The Planning Route is drawn on the chart with series of QuickWaypoints (or Waypoints) linked with orange dotted lines. When you make a route with the Route Tool, you can either use existing waypoints (2) or make new ones (1). If you don't use (click on) existing Waypoints, QuickWaypoints will be automatically created (1). These QuickWaypoints are not added to the Waypoint database and are automatically deleted when the route is erased. Selected Route (Planning Route) is surrounded in orange as shown in Fig1. Unselected route are display in blue. To select a route, simply choose the Finger Tool and click on a blue route. The route will become selected (orange) and characteristic of each leg (route plan) will be displayed in the Selected Route Center. To call up the Selected Routes Center select [Centers] from the [Route] menu and choose [Selected Routes] Several methods can be used to create a Planning Route: Using Route tool for drawing it on the chart. Active Route
An Active Route is one that MaxSea will follow. MaxSea will display the distance, bearing and time to go to the next Waypoint on the route based upon data coming in from the instruments.

32

Getting Started

An active Route can be created by activating a planning route. Only one Route can be active at a time. The Active Route is displayed in red (while the Selected planning route is displayed in orange), and its active Waypoint is filed in with red. When Display XTE option is ON (selected by default), the Security XTE area is delimited with two dotted lines, green and red, on each side of the active route. To set up the default XTE length, select [Options: Route] from the [Route] menu and change the Default Leg XTE. The Passed Legs are drawn with grey dotted lines as it is shown in the picture. When the route is activated and the computer is connected to an autopilot, MaxSea allows the autopilot to control the movement of the boat. Creating a Quick Route with the Route Tool 1. 2. 3. 4. Click the "Go to..." tool on Toolbar, position the cursor on the chart at a desired place. Double click any where on the chart or on an existing waypoint. See the HELP menu in MaxSea for complete details on the Auto-Scale Function. This can be done under the Route properties dialog. When approaching to a waypoint on the Active Route, the waypoint is switched by two methods: 1. 2. The boat passes an imaginary perpendicular line passing through the center of the destination waypoint. The boat comes within the Arrival Alarm Range.

You can track your actual active route by clicking the Track button from the Toolbar (see following chapter "Tracking"). See the HELP menu in MaxSea for complete details about route, Steering Data and Steering Display. Cancelling Active Route When you reach the last waypoint of the Active Route, the Active Route is cancelled; if you want to cancel the Active Route before reaching the last waypoint, select Cancel Active Route from the Route menu, or right click on the Active Route and choose Cancel Active Route.

TIPS - To quickly cancel an active route, double click on the Go To tool.

See the HELP menu in MaxSea for complete details for following easily the navigation from the Steering Data and Graph windows, and with more details from the Active Route Center.

Layers and Marks

Waypoints and personal marks can be saved onto layer(s). When MaxSea is started, an empty waypoint layer (named Waypoint) and an empty PTF file layer (named "Layer.ptf") are created. When a mark is plotted in MaxSea, the information is actually being displayed in its own transparent layer over the chart. While it may appear that there is new visual information on the chart itself, MaxSea stores this information separately. Therefore, this information can be displayed or hidden independently of the chart information.

34

Getting Started

For example as shown in Fig. 1, begin with a chart Layer (1), add marks and MaxSea stores them on a PTF layer (2) which lies over the chart , then add waypoints and MaxSea stores them on a waypoint layer (3) and in database.

Fig.1 The result appears as if the marks and waypoints are drawn directly on the chart.

There are two categories of data layer depending on the plotting information overlay on the chart: 1. 2. Waypoint and Routes layers User data layers (PTF File) 1. 2. Create a waypoints layer, got to the [File] menu, point [New] and choose [WP layer...] Enter new layer name

Before placing Waypoints and creating Routes on the chart:

Click OK

Now, all the Waypoints you will create will be saved on this new layer (known as active layer). You may change icon and color of Waypoint using the plotting icon and color button. To switch active layers, just click and hold down the mouse on the Plotting Tool. This will show a drop-down menu where you can select the active layer. You can also change the Waypoint layer attached to a waypoint in the Waypoint Center or in the Waypoint Properties box. To show or hide each waypoints layers, use the Waypoint & Route button on the Chart toolbar and choose which one you want to show or hide. All the Waypoints are stored in the Waypoints Center. To call up the Waypoints Center select [Centers] from the [Route] menu and choose [Waypoints].

Note When a waypoint layer becomes empty, it is automatically deleted. The number of waypoint and user data layer is unlimited.
User data Layer (PTF File): PTF layers are used to draw personal marks, area, circle etc. A User data layer can be treated like any other file used in a Windows program, like documents in a word processing program. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To create a new PTF layer : Go to the [File] menu, point [New] and choose [PTF layer...] . To open an existing layer either select [Open...] or press on the keyboard "Ctrl + O" . To close the active layer either select [Close] or press on the keyboard "Ctrl + W", then choose the file to close. To save the active layer either select [Save...] or press on the keyboard "Ctrl + S". To save on to a new layer, select [Save As...], then choose a path and a name.

There can be more than one layer opened at the same time. The layer button in the chart palette can be used to show/hide the opened layers. With many layers open, only one can be active. The active layer is the one that new marks will be written to, and is set from the plotting tool dropdown menu. When a PTF file layer is selected, you can choose the type (line, area, circle, text) using Mark type selection boxes located in the lower half of the Toolbar. 1. 2. Choose the drawing type and select dependent parameters. Use the Plotting Setup tools to change the color, line, width, drawing, texture and font size. Select the Plotting pen tool from the Toolbar, place the cursor on screen; and then click. A mark (point, line, area, circle or text) will be displayed at the position clicked.

Notes The number of waypoint and user data layer is unlimited. New user data file is stored by default at first level of "My Documents | My MaxSea" repertory, to change or create new repertory used by default go to the [File] menu and choose [Option: File].

Track your actual course

This chapter describes details about how to display on the chart and save the track of your ship. Click on the "Track on/off" button in the Toolbar. The Track off button changes to Track on (red background).

The track is then displayed on the chart and automatically saved onto the Layer[WGS84] file by default.

36

Getting Started

Click on the Track on/off button again in the Toolbar to deactivate the track saving function. The program gives you the option to save the track permanently in a "PTF" file on the hard drive.

Left-clicking on "Save" will save the track in the layer.ptf and clicking on "Do not Save" will lose the save of track. Left-clicking on "New file" will save the track in a chosen file. Left-clicking on "Open file" has two effects open an existing file and save the track in it.

Dont forget to turn ON the Layer Information button in the Chart Toolbar to display the PTF file over the chart.

Using Weather Data

Comprehensive weather data that can be displayed over your chart is available to MaxSea users over the internet. MaxSea Chopper is used for downloading GRIB Files by E-mail. For more weather options including advanced models from NOAA which incorporate weather from satellite, water buoys, and research boats select [Chopper: Navcenter Forecast...] from the [Weather] menu. Choose the weather models listed to get to the request page. There you can select the region with your mouse, amount and type of forecast data, and click on the "Get it by e-mail" button at the top of the screen. (The first time you access Chopper, you will have to register your e-mail address.)

Chopper will launch your default e-mail program (typically Outlook), allowing you to send the weather request to the Navcenter weather server. You will receive an e-mail within 5-10 minutes with an attachment. Double-clicking the attachment will open the weather file in MaxSea.

Note: We suggest using MaxSea compression which creates the smallest possible weather file to speed up your download time.
The following shows sea surface temperature (colors), current (yellow arrows), and wind (feathers) as you would see it in MaxSea.

38

Getting Started

Clicking anywhere on the chart with the finger selection tool will give you full weather details for that point. Use the Date/Time tools in the chart palette to advance the weather forecast period.

Dead Reckoning function

The Dead Reckoning function is used for testing, planning, or should the vessels GPS system fail. Dead Reckoning calculates the ships position using a starting position, the course and the speed. Dead Reckoning also simulates vessel movement on a home computer without a GPS connection.

Notes: (1) Dead Reckoning calculations begin at the last position simulated or acquired by the GPS. (2) MaxSea starts in acquisition mode (Dead Reckoning turned off) by default.
Switch to Dead Reckoning mode under [Utilities] on the menu bar. Acknowledge the warning concerning loss of real-time data, and the warning which appears, "click OK to confirm Dead Reckoning mode, GPS input is turned off. The first time dead reckoning is used, the vessel will be placed off the coast of Africa at 0 Lat. and 0 Lon. Drag the boat symbol by selecting the Position Modification tool from the Tool Palette:

By default the Dead Reckoning palette appears docked on the upper right-hand corner of the layers toolbar, as it's shown below, and the Nav Data palette becomes the Dead Reckoning control center. To modify the boat position use the Dead Reckoning symbols. The Dead Reckoning symbols can be displayed in a floating palette as shown below.

Installing Data & Cartography

Installing Charts and Data
As a hard drive is much faster than a CD-ROM drive, using an installed catalog will increase the speed of chart manipulations (opening, scrolling). An installed catalog allows you to use several regions at the same time, even if you have only one CD-ROM drive. With installed catalogs, you can work without your CD-ROM. All the charts are kept inside your computer, and your CD-ROM drive is free for other uses. To install Mapmedia, Maptech chart Pack, a Maptech chart Kit or a ARCS CD-ROM on the hard disk :

First create a new folder for example named "charts" on one of your hard disks root for example on "C:\" disk or in the folder "My documents". Then copy all the chart files in it.

To install a C-Map CD-ROM, FULLY copy the CM93 directory of your CD-ROM on your hard disk root. The software now can automatically detect the cartography situated on C:\ charts\. C-MAP CM93 v3

How to install the vector charts CM93v3

CM93 v3 is an evolution of the library CM93 v2. The main difference with the library v2 is its compatibility with the S57 / S52 format, the new international standard of the hydrographic services for the electronic charts production.

56

Installing Data & Cartography

The Vector S57 difference between S52 is that lighthouses representation are in the standard form (50 pixels height with a cone and a colored circle...), probes are in police verdana 12, and colors are corresponding to the S52 standard. The user can choose the display of his charts either with or without lighthouses, with or without names, with or without lines of probes,

Vector charts installation process

The user receives a CD containing a geographic zone, ordered from C-Map commercial services or more simply from his distributor . He can then insert the CD. Cartography can be used from the CD or copied onto the hard disk. It is advised to copy the data base to the hard disk, to improve the access speed and thus display of charts. However, for old computers having little disk space, it is possible to work directly on the CD. This operation can be done with Windows explorer as well as with the application "GDB Admin" described below. Reference the CM93 v3 cartography to make it accessible :

Select [Manage CM93ed3 & S57 charts] under displayed and allows to manage CM93 v3 and S57 databases. Then click on the "Databases

- The database referenced but not assigned by default is displayed with a red mark. (2) - You should use this utility for cancel or to update databases, what can be useful if you wish to abolish a database for example.

IMPORTANT
The possible problems are bound to incoherence of the database you want to reference or assign by default. Then "Bad Data" box appear, which can have two previous history:

If you select a database in the right window and what you try to reference it, the message appears if the base is not valid. It is necessary to use a new CD either to redo the copy or to contact again C-Map. If you select a database in the left window and you try to assign it by default, the message appears if the base is not valid any more. It is thus that you have erase this base of your disc or that you removed the CD. It is necessary to put it back to the initial place or better, to do" Unregister Database " then to reference this one.

Connecting equipment

Connecting Equipment
The software is configured to be connected on serial port COM 1 to a GPS which sends the standard positioning information : - Norm : NMEA 183 - Sentences : GLL(Position), VTG ( SOG / COG ) - Baud Rate : 4800 Most PCs on the market use a standard 9 pin male RS232 serial port. Connect the cable from your GPS to the COM1 port.

(see the PC computer cable diagram for more details).

IMPORTANT:

Installation & configuration

Serial port :

If your computer has no serial port, you may install an internal PCI board, a PC-Card (PCMCIA) or a USB to serial adapter. Note that older systems may have a male 25 PIN DB25 serial port. Don't confuse this with the parallel (printer) port, which has a 25 pin female connector. In order to ensure accuracy, check that your GPS receiver is properly configured to match geodesy of your electronic charts (usually WGS84). Some GPS receivers communicate in hundredths of minutes (instead of thousandths) by default. A precision of thousandths is required for proper operation and accuracy with MaxSea. Make the necessary configuration changes to your GPS receiver.

Data Input-Output Settings

MaxSea is compatible with several types of equipment. It allows the user to configure the Input/output data, to verify the data acquired and to modify the horizontal datum used by the GPS: MaxSea expects standard positioning from a GPS.

Norm : NMEA 183 Sentences : GLL(Position), VTG ( SOG / COG ) Baud Rae : 4800

This default configuration can be modified if necessary. Select [Data Input-Output Settings] from the [Utilities] menu On the [Data Input-Output Settings] tabs you will be able to : From the BOAT or RADAR & AIS or TRAWL or DREDGE tabs : show active COM ports used with devices connected on. add either to remove easily an instrument, see Add or Remove Instrument chapters For each one you can:

define norm to be used define the speed of communication define among received data those that will be used in MaxSea (see Advanced settings... chapter.)

IMPORTANT - Any tab as "RADAR & AIS" or "TRAWL" or "DREDGE", are dynamic so their display will depend on the software configuration.

From Preferences tab : Define general preferences (Tolerance of position, geodetic datum correction... ) Backup or restore configuration Configure network communication Occasionally when several systems are connected together, trouble can appear during creating a quick route. This can come from if PC time is not synchronized with PC time. By default this synchronization is turned on (the "Synchronize PC time with GPS" box is checked). From Check Data tab :

Master selection If the same information is provide by several instruments, you need to select one as your master source. For example, boat position may be received by your GPS and your Loran. To define your master instrument, select it in master column.

Notes : (1) - Previously Master column gives you the name of the master instrument previously used for this data. (2) - Choose Heading from instrument as the Master for the latitude and longitude because this value will be used for the chart display orientation, GPS symbol display on the chart,etc...
Baud Rate selection The Baud rate is defined during the instrument installation (see Adding Instruments), but can be changed here if necessary. Checksum The NMEA 0183 Standard allows for an optional checksum. The checksum is preceded by the asterisk (*) character placed after the last data field. It is a special two-character representation which verifies the character bytes of the sentence. (Checksums are like person one giving person two a list of 100 numbers. To verify that all the numbers were received correctly, person number two replies with the sum of the numbers. If the sum of the 100 number is correct, it is assumed that all of the information was correctly transmitted.) If you prefer to ignore checksum errors, then select "Ignore sentences with checksum errors" from Miscellaneous column.

Installation & configuration

IMPORTANT
Serial communication using RS-232 requires similar parameters between instrument and serial port configuration (baud rate of the transmission, the number of data bits encoding a character, the sense of the optional parity bit, the number of stop bits). NMEA 0183 devices employ an asynchronous serial interface with the following parameters: - Baud Rate 4800 - Data Bits 8 - Parity None - Stop Bits One(or more) NMEA 0183 sentence description : All NMEA 0183 messages start with a "$" and are terminated by a [Carriage Return][Line Feed]. The five characters immediately after the "$" are the address field. The address field is interpreted based on the type of sentence (talker, query or proprietary). Multiple data fields follow the address field and are delimited by commas. The address field of a talker sentence contains a five character string immediately following the "$" sign. - the first two characters are the talker identifier - the next three are the sentence identifier. The sentence identifier defines the remaining data fields. Under the NMEA 0183 Standard, the data fields are uniquely defined for each sentence type. An example talker sentence is: GLL - Geographic Position, Latitude / Longitude Latitude and Longitude of present vessel position, time of position fix and status. $GPGLL,5133.81,N,00042.25,W 1 2 3 4 4648.882 N 00312.053 W Current latitude North/South Current longitude East/West

Note: the Display button offers the possibility to keep the information scrolling or to stop the display (the sentence processing continues even if the display is stopped). If there is nothing displayed in the Check Data tab - the electronic equipment is not or is badly connected (for example, earth wire and signal wire reversed). See Cable diagram, as well as the technical manual for the connected equipment,

77

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

- the electronic equipment is not configured correctly (data transmission to the serial port is not activated or is activated with a transmission frequency which is too slow). Refer to the technical manual for the connected equipment, - the electronic equipment format is different from that which is specified in MaxSea (for example, CIF instead of NMEA 183, etc.): modify the format in order to ensure coherence between connected electronic equipment and MaxSea (see above paragraphs). If the window Check Data displays incomprehensible characters and if data is not interpreted by MaxSea

The format of the electronic equipment is really different from that which is specified in MaxSea (for example CIF instead of NMEA 183, etc.). Modify the format in order to ensure coherence between electronic equipment connected and MaxSea (see above paragraphs). Serial port and instrument configuration (Baud rate, parity...) are different, see the specification of the instrument.

Verify data analysis

menu [Utilities] : [Data Input-Output Settings] Data Display tab Before verify the MaxSea data analysis be sure that the connection is good, see verify connection and data chapter. The data display tab show following information :

78

Installation & configuration

First line give you :

the name of the instrument : Boat / radar... the DATA origin : COM 1, COM 2, Data Calculator... data selected on the corresponding instrument port : Latitude , Longitude , SOG , ... the received or calculate value of each data which will be transmitted to MaxSea.

On each column you can verify :

IMPORTANT: if a value is replaced by "---" that means that the received or calculated data is bad and cannot be used correctly by MaxSea.
If one or several data stay in zero "---"
1. Received data bad analysis :

you don't receive this information. The connected equipment is badly configured and it does not send data on the serial port (refer to the technical manual of the connected equipment)

the sentence sent with the connected equipment is different from the one that was specified Modify the configuration of this data to assure the coherence between the connected electronic equipment and MaxSea example $ - GLL instead of $ - GGA for a position in size NMEA 183

Note : to verify if you received or not an information and the sentence use for it you can display data entries from the Check data tab. (see Verify connection and data) 2. calculated data problems :

at least one of the value use for the data calculation is bad or missing. (see Data calculator chapter)

Flow control data parameters

Select the Advanced COM settings button from the "Data settings"window, the dialog box appears and gives you the possibility to verify and modify flow data parameters.

How to configure :

FLOW CONTROL sentences

79

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

CTS (clear-to-send) output flow control

Specifies whether the CTS signal is monitored for output flow control. If this member is TRUE and CTS is turned off, output is suspended until CTS is sent again.

DSR (data-set-ready) output flow control

Specifies whether the DSR signal is monitored for output flow control. If this member is TRUE and DSR is turned off, output is suspended until DSR is sent again.

DSR Sensitivity

Specifies whether the communications driver is sensitive to the state of the DSR signal. If this member is TRUE, the driver ignores any bytes received, unless the DSR modem input line is high.

DTR (data-terminal-ready) flow control type

Specifies the DTR flow control. This member can be one of the following values : Disable Enable Disables the DTR line when the device is opened and leaves it disabled. Enables the DTR line when the device is opened and leaves it on Enables DTR handshaking

Handshake

o o o o o

RTS (request-to-send) flow control Disable Enable Disables the RTS line when the device is opened and leaves it disabled. Enables the RTS line when the device is opened and leaves it on.

Specifies the RTS flow control. This member can be one of the following values.

Handshake Enables RTS handshaking. The driver raises the RTS line when the "type-ahead" (input) buffer is less than one-half full and lowers the RTS line when the buffer is more than threequarters full. Toggle Specifies that the RTS line will be high if bytes are available for transmission. After all buffered bytes have been sent, the RTS line will be low

PARITY

Enable Parity Checking

Specifies whether parity checking is enabled. If this member is TRUE, parity checking is performed and errors are reported.

Parity

Specifies the parity scheme to be used. This member can be one of the following values.

Even

o o o o
ERRORS

Mark No Parity Odd Space

o o o o o o

Enable error replacement Specifies whether bytes received with parity errors are replaced with the character specified by the ErrorChar member. If this member is TRUE and the Parity member is TRUE, replacement occurs. Error Replacement character Specifies the value of the character used to replace bytes received with a parity error. Abort on error Specifies whether read and write operations are terminated if an error occurs. If this member is TRUE, the driver terminates all read and write operations with an error status if an error occurs.

Xon / Xoff

Xon / Xoff out flow control

80

Installation & configuration

Specifies whether XON/XOFF flow control is used during transmission. If this member is TRUE, transmission stops when the XoffChar character is received and starts again when the XonChar character is received.

Xon / Xoff in flow control Specifies whether XON/XOFF flow control is used during reception. If this member is TRUE, the XoffChar character is sent when the input buffer comes within XoffLim bytes of being full, and the XonChar character is sent when the input buffer comes within XonLim bytes of being empty.

Continue TX on error Specifies whether transmission stops when the input buffer is full and the driver has transmitted the XoffChar character. If this member is TRUE, transmission continues after the input buffer has come within XoffLim bytes of being full and the driver has transmitted the XoffChar character to stop receiving bytes. If this member is FALSE, transmission does not continue until the input buffer is within XonLim bytes of being empty and the driver has transmitted the XonChar character to resume reception.

o o o

Tx and Rx XON character Specifies the value of the XON character for both transmission and reception. Tx and Rx XOFF character Specifies the value of the XOFF character for both transmission and reception. Transmit XON threshold Specifies the minimum number of bytes allowed in the input buffer before flow control is activated to inhibit the sender. Note that the sender may transmit characters after the flow control signal has been activated, so this value should never be zero. This assumes that either XON/XOFF, RTS, or DTR input flow control is specified in fInX, fRtsControl, or fDtrControl.

Transmit XOFF threshold Specifies the maximum number of bytes allowed in the input buffer before flow control is activated to allow transmission by the sender. This assumes that either XON/XOFF, RTS, or DTR input flow control is specified in fInX,fRtsControl, or fDtrControl. The maximum number of bytes allowed is calculated by subtracting this value from the size, in bytes, of the input buffer.

OTHERS

Stop bits Specifies the number of stop bits to be used. This member can be one of the following values. - 1 Stop bit - 1.5 Stop Bits - 2 Stop bits

o o

Byte size Specifies the number of bits in the bytes transmitted and received. Binary mode, no EOF check Specifies whether binary mode is enabled. The Win32 API does not support non binary mode transfers, so this member should be TRUE. Using FALSE may not work.

Enable null striping Specifies whether null bytes are discarded. If this member is TRUE, null bytes are discarded when received.

o o

End of input character Specifies the value of the character used to signal the end of data. Received event character Specifies the value of the character used to signal an event.

Frequency : determine the interval between 2 sending of chains towards the Autopilot NMEA Talker: in NMEA 183, $--GLL $--RMC, etc. chains, the "--" will be replaced by the chosen prefix for the sending to Autopilot.

Geodetic datum Electronic charts and GPS receivers generally use WGS 84 Geodetic Datum. Meanwhile, if the charts are for example in Europe 50 geodesy and if your GPS does not recognize this geodesy or can not be modified for whatever reason, call up the Utilities menu and select With datum transformation. Then, thanks to the corresponding menus, select the geodesy of the positioning device and the geodesy of the chart. Note: as far as is possible, match the geodesy of your GPS receiver to that of your chart to avoid having different positions displayed on the GPS receiver and in MaxSea. Echo Repeat (without any process) all information arriving on a port, on this same port. COG / SOG recalculation This ratio is useful if in your Input-Output configuration, the speed and heading data are not selected on the master instrument for the position The speed and heading data are essential for MaxSea working; so, it is necessary to computerize them (from the positions) when the master GPS receiver no longer supplies them. It is recommended to leave this computing to be made as often as possible (every position = 1) and to increase the ratio according to the lack of precision of your master GPS receiver. Backup / Restore configuration Allows you to Backup or to Restore an input output configuration. See Backup and restore configuration Chapter. Network Allows you to activate to receive or send data using the installed network. See Network repeater Chapter.

Meanwhile, you will find information to directly link electronic equipment to your computer. The serial ports on your computer, as well as those of the internal PCI board, comply with RS 232 type electrical characteristics; a standard generally used in marine electronics by most existing GPS receivers and equipment. Consequently, the connection of a GPS receiver to the computer is generally limited to a 2-wire connection with a NMEA 183 output from the GPS receiver ( GPS ) to input (RxD) and ground (Gnd) pins of the computer. IMPORTANT If your electronic equipment comply to RS 422 type electrical characteristics, you cannot use the following process; please contact your dealer. Nearly all manufacturers adhere to the RS 232 standard. Connections at serial port of the computer:

Problems with ground loops

85

MaxSea v12.5 - Installation Manual

On certain ships which have multiple interfaces, there can exist electrical phenomena called ground loops. In fact, certain devices may have masses which are at different potentials. Take the example of a GPS connected in parallel to a computer and a radar. The simple fact of connecting the GPS to the radar and the computer can disturb output signals (mass reference different between the 3 devices). An extraneous current may result which prevents correct reading of NMEA chains on the computer. Temporary solution Connect only the TxD equipment wire and not the Gnd (Ground) wire to the computers serial port. Permanent solution First, isolate the computers power supply using a converter with galvanic isolation (isolation of the negative pole of the battery with the reference mass of the computer). Then opto-couple serial links between the computer and all connected electronic equipment (contact your dealer). An opto-isolator, also known as an optical coupler or optocoupler, is a semiconductor device that allows signals to be transferred between circuits or systems, while keeping those circuits or systems electrically isolated from each other. MaxSea-NavNet Installation

MaxSea-Navnet Installation Overview

The computer on which MaxSea is installed has an IP address to communicate with the NavNet system. The NavNet system uses a TCP/IP computer protocol through an Ethernet. This protocol is an open architecture that allows for multiple ways of connecting the NavNet system. The number of display units which may be installed depends on the number of network sounder connected. For a system incorporating three or more products, a "hub" is required to process data. To connect three or more NavNet system (Max. 4 display unit and one network sounder capable display units) refer to the related topic: Connecting MaxSea to a NavNet system. The following illustration shows a single-unit NavNet system connected to a computer display unit using MaxSea .

Network Setup
The NavNet uses TCP/IP data communication protocol. IP provides the basic packet delivery service for the NavNet. The IP protocol implements a system of logical host addresses called IP addresses. The IP addresses are used by the NavNet to identify devices and to perform internetwork routing.

TCP/IP Setup
The default IP addresses are assigned as :

IP ADDRESS : 172.031.003.xxx

SUBNET MASK: 255.255.000.000 The three digits is any number between 001 and 254.

IMPORTANT!
Never set the same IP address in the network. It is necessary to change the last three digits of the IP address when like models are used in a network.

The IP address of MaxSea is define from your computer system : MaxSea System Network configuration The IP address of NavNet is define from [NavNet NETWORK SETUP]

Host name
Host name must be entered to get various display modes and display combinations in the NETWORK. Each display unit has its own host Name to distinguish it from others in the network. The name can contain figures.

Host name in MaxSea are configured from the [Utilities] / [Option : Navnet...] menu. The Host name on NavNet is define from [NavNet NETWORK SETUP]

2.1. Go to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP] Properties Windows (Steps 1.1 to 1.3.)

2.2. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically"

Add an alternate, static, IP address for Navnet use.(Windows XP) 2.3. Click on Alternate Configuration Tab. Specifies that TCP/IP use the alternate configuration if a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is not found. This alternate configuration is useful when the computer is used on more than one network, at least one of the networks does not have a DHCP server, and an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) configuration is not wanted. A good example is a laptop computer that is used at the office and at home. At the office, the laptop uses a DHCPallocated TCP/IP configuration. At home, where there is no DHCP server present, the laptop automatically uses the alternate configuration, allowing easy access to home network devices and the Internet. This enables the laptop to operate seamlessly on both networks without manual TCP/IP reconfiguration.

MaxSea NavNet Demonstration Installation

If you want to show Radar Overlay and Sounder Display in MaxSea, you will need to install a fully functional Navnet Network. Note that when you put your Navnet Display in Simulation mode (for the Radar and Sounder), the data is not broadcast over the network and MaxSea cannot show them. So you will need the Furuno Radar Simulator (EG3000) that will provide the Radar Picture and the heading (via AD10 output). For the sounder, just connect a BBFF1 or BBFF3 to your network. It will provide the Echo Picture, the Depth and Temperature. The simulation Setup for your Navnet Radar should be :

"Live" for the Radar "Simulation" for the Plotter (3511882N, 13943667E to match the radar echo) "Simulation 2" or "ETR Data" for the Sounder
