Editorial

La revista Perspectivas inicia una nueva etapa con cambio de aspecto y reordenacin de contenidos para dar espacio a la diversidad de oferta que desde el museo se propone a los distintos pblicos. Como queremos que nuestras pginas den una mayor visibilidad a cada uno de los programas que desarrollamos, adems de las secciones sobre las exposiciones de la temporada (en torno a las cuales se estructura una buena parte de nuestras actividades), hemos creado nuevas secciones para los Amigos del Museo, EducaThyssen, Noticias del Museo y Tienda-librera. Hemos orientado la presentacin de los contenidos para que el lector tenga una informacin clara de lo que va a ocurrir a lo largo del cuatrimestre: las exposiciones que hay, los cuadros de la coleccin en prstamo, los cursos y conferencias, los productos en tienda, las novedades editoriales. Hemos cambiado el formato a un tamao ms manejable y nos hemos pasado al color. S, estamos contentos con el resultado. Esperamos que a nuestros lectores les guste la nueva revista tanto como a nosotros, que disfruten de su lectura, aprovechen sus contenidos y la vean como una til herramienta para estar al da de todo lo que acontece en el Museo en los prximos cuatro meses. Ya de cara a este verano y a este nmero, tambin es novedad nuestra participacin en el festival PHotoEspaa cita anual de fotografa que todos los veranos inunda el panorama expositivo de Madrid- con la exposicin del fotgrafo coreano Bae Bien-U. Nuestra oferta veraniega la protagonizan otras dos magnficas exposiciones: Tintoretto. El Paraso y De Cranach a Monet. Obras Maestras de la Coleccin Prez Simn, que podrn visitarse hasta las 11 de la noche durante julio y agosto; y se completa con talleres para nios y jvenes o la posibilidad de cenar en la terraza El Mirador disfrutando de unas privilegiadas vistas sobre la masa arbrea del Paseo del Prado y el Parque del Retiro.

Perspectives embarks on a new phase, with a change of look and new organisation of its contents in order to ensure complete coverage of the wide range of activities that the Museum offers to the visiting public. With the aim of giving a higher profile to each of the programmes offered, and to the sections on the current temporary exhibitions (which are the focus for a large proportion of our activities) we have created new sections for Friends of the Museum, EducaThyssen, News and the Gift-Shop/Bookshop. The presentation of the contents has been redesigned to offer the reader a clear idea of what will be taking place over the following four months. This will include temporary exhibitions, paintings on loan, courses and lectures, products in the shop and new publications. Perspectives now has a smaller, more manageable format and is printed in colour. We hope you like the result as much as we do and enjoy reading it. In addition, we hope you find the contents useful and see the magazine as a source of information for keeping up to date on everything that will be happening at the Museum over the four months ahead. With summer here and a new issue out, another innovation is the Museums participation in PHotoEspaa, the annual photography festival that fills Madrid with exhibitions every summer. The Museum is presenting an exhibition of photography by the Korean artist Bae Bien-U. In addition, there are two other outstanding exhibitions to be seen at the moment: Tintoretto. The Paradise and From Cranach to Monet. Masterpieces from the Prez Simn Collection. Both are open to 11 at night during July and August. Other summer activities and options include workshops for children and young people and the chance to enjoy dinner in the El Mirador terrace-restaurant which offers marvellous views over the tree-tops to the Paseo del Prado and the Retiro Park.

Obras maestras de la Coleccin Prez Simn

Este verano, el Museo propone a sus visitantes un recorrido por los principales movimientos artsticos del siglo XIV al XIX, De Cranach a Monet, a travs de las obras maestras de la Coleccin Prez Simn: 57 pinturas seleccionadas de los fondos de una de las colecciones privadas ms importantes de Amrica Latina. Bronzino, Cranach, Rubens, Tiepolo, Goya, Corot, Czanne, Monet, Pizarro, Gauguin, Renoir, Van Gogh,... nombres fundamentales de la historia del arte, estn presentes en una muestra que es, adems, la primera presentacin pblica de esta importante coleccin particular mexicana. Formada por ms de 1.000 piezas, incluyendo no slo pintura sino tambin escultura, dibujo, artes decorativas y manuscritos, la Coleccin Prez Simn empez a formarse en los aos 1970 y, actualmente, est preparando una sede para crear su propio museo en Ciudad de Mxico. Se conoce tambin como Coleccin JAPS, iniciales del nombre de su creador, Juan Antonio Prez Simn, y de la Fundacin que la gestiona: Juntos Actuando por la Superacin. La personalidad y el gusto de su propietario, junto al rigor esttico y una cuidadosa seleccin de las obras, han sido los ejes de una poltica de adquisiciones especialmente intensa en las dos ltimas dcadas. La belleza femenina, la naturaleza, el bodegn o las escenas de la vida cotidiana, son algunos de los temas frecuentes en sus fondos; otros aspectos, como la fascinacin por el uso de la luz y el color, particularmente en una etapa importante de la historia de la pintura como es la transformacin del academicismo hacia la modernidad en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, constituyen igualmente uno de los captulos mejor representados. Con una fuerte vocacin internacional, la Coleccin Prez Simn y, con ella, la Fundacin que la gestiona, nace y crece tambin con el nimo de completar

From Cranach to Monet

Masterpieces from the Prez Simn Collection
This summer the Museum is offering visitors the chance to see a survey of the main artistic movements in western painting from the 14th to the 19th centuries. From Cranach to Monet is an exhibition of masterpieces from the Prez Simn Collection comprising 57 works from a collection considered one of the most important private holdings in South America. Bronzino, Cranach, Rubens, Tiepolo, Goya, Corot, Czanne, Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Renoir and Van Gogh are among the key names in the history of art present in this exhibition which is also the first public presentation of this important private Mexican collection. Comprising more than 1,000 works in total covering not just painting but also sculpture, drawing, the decorative arts and manuscripts, the Prez Simn Collection was begun around 1970 and is now in the process of building a permanent museum for its display in Mexico City. It is also known as the JAPS collection, the initials of its creator, Juan Antonio Prez Simn, and of the Foundation that manages it: Juntos Actuando por la Superacin. The personality and taste of its owner, combined with aesthetic rigour and a careful selection of the works have been the key factors in the collections acquisition policy, which has been particularly active over the past two decades. Female beauty, nature, the still life, and scenes from daily life are among the most widely depicted subjects and themes, while also evident is a fascination with the use of light and colour, particularly at a crucial stage in the history of painting such as the shift from Academic painting towards modern art in the second half of the 19th century. This area is among the best represented in

con sus fondos el panorama cultural de su entorno inmediato e impulsar el desarrollo de proyectos culturales y de creacin artstica en su pas. La comisaria de la exposicin, Roxana Velsquez Martnez del Campo directora del Museo Nacional de Arte de Mxico D.F. y conservadora de la propia coleccin ha preparado un recorrido cronolgico que sintetiza la evolucin de la pintura de los siglos XIV al XIX, y estructura la muestra en seis apartados: los dos primeros presentan las escuelas italiana y alemana de los siglos XIV al XVI y las escuelas italiana, flamenca, francesa y espaola del siglo XVIII, respectivamente. A continuacin, se expone la pintura del XIX, que constituye uno de los puntos fuertes de la Coleccin Prez Simn y, por tanto, de esta exposicin; las obras de esta centuria se renen en los siguientes apartados: Academicismo y Realismo, Pintura victoriana y, por ltimo, Impresionismo y Postimpresionismo. Especial mencin merecen las dos salas dedicadas a la pintura realizada en Gran Bretaa durante el reinado de Victoria de Inglaterra: se presentan obras de Rossetti, Millais, Leighton o Hunt, principales artistas de las corrientes prerrafaelita y esteticista, escasamente representadas en los museos espaoles, por lo que constituyen uno de los captulos ms interesantes de la muestra.

the collection. Highly international in nature, the Prez Simn Collection and the Foundation that runs it were arose from an ongoing desire to complement the holdings of Mexican museums and to encourage the development of cultural projects and artistic creation within that country. Roxana Velsquez Martnez del Campo, the curator of the exhibition, Director of the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico DF, and the Curator of the Prez Simn Collection, has organised a chronological survey which offers a synthesis of the evolution of painting from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The exhibition is structured into six sections: the first presents Italian and German painting from the 14th to the 16th centuries, while the second covers 18th century Italian, Flemish, French and Spanish painting. The remainder of the exhibition focuses on 19th century painting, which is one of the strongest areas within the Prez Simn Collection and thus of the present exhibition. The paintings here are divided into the following sections: Academic Painting and Realism; Victorian Painting; and finally Impressionism and PostImpressionism. The two rooms devoted to British painting during the reign of Queen Victoria are particularly outstanding with works by Rossetti, Millais, Lord Leighton and Hunt, the main figures within the Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements. These artists are very little represented in Spanish museums and their paintings thus constitute one of the most interesting sections of the exhibition.

Tintoretto. El Paraso
La edicin n 19 de la serie Contextos de la Coleccin Permanente, organizada en colaboracin con el Museo del Louvre y los Musei Civici Veneziani, gira en torno a la historia de un concurso convocado a finales del siglo XVI y rene, por primera vez desde entonces, las cinco propuestas que presentaron algunos de los grandes artistas del momento en respuesta a dicha convocatoria. Se trataba de buscar un proyecto que sustituyera al gran fresco que cubra el fondo de la tribuna en la sala del Consejo del Palacio de los Dux de Venecia, gravemente daado tras sufrir un incendio. Tintoretto, Verons, Palma el Joven y Francesco Bassano, presentaron sus bocetos atenindose a las especiales caractersticas del concurso, que impona el tema se mantena el mismo del fresco perdido: la Coronacin de la Virgen, tambin conocida como El Paraso -, a las grandes dimensiones de la pared y de la sala a las que iban destinados, a su distribucin, y al carcter simblico de representacin de la jerarqua poltica veneciana. Si bien el jurado otorg el proyecto de forma conjunta a Verons y Bassano, la muerte del primero en 1588 y el retraso en los trabajos por parte de Bassano, hicieron que finalmente fuera Tintoretto quien se hiciera con tan importante encargo. La visita a la exposicin permite al espectador comparar el trabajo de estos grandes maestros del arte renacentista y sentirse, al mismo tiempo, abrumado por la espectacular decoracin palaciega. El gran tamao de las obras y el rico colorido de las composiciones dotan a esta muestra de gran monumentalidad. Tintoretto. El Paraso es el resultado de un largo e intenso trabajo de investigacin que ha aportado nuevos datos tanto sobre el gran lienzo de Tintoretto que habitualmente preside el hall del Museo, cuya fecha de realizacin se ha fijado hacia 1588, como sobre la pintura veneciana de la poca; todo ello se recoge en el interesante catlogo publicado con motivo de esta exposicin. Fruto de la colaboracin entre los tres muesos organizadores, la muestra pudo verse primero en el Louvre y, tras su paso por Madrid, viajar al Palazzo Ducale de Venecia; una oportunidad nica para contemplar los cinco bocetos junto al lienzo definitivo de Tintoretto que decora, desde entonces, la Gran Sala del Consejo.

Tintoretto. The Paradise

Exhibition number 19 in the series Contexts of the Permanent Collection has been organised by the Museum in collaboration with the Muse du Louvre and the Musei Civici Veneziani. It focuses on the history of a competition organised at the end of the 16th century and brings together for the first time the five proposals presented by some of the leading artists of the day in their attempts to win the commission involved. The project was the replacement of the large fresco that covered the end wall of the tribune in the Sala del Gran Consiglio in the Doges Palace in Venice, which had been seriously damaged in a fire. Tintoretto, Veronese, Palma Giovane and Francesco Bassano all presented their preliminary oil sketches, which took into account the particular requirements of the competition and the subject that had to be painted. Artists were required to repeat the subject of the original fresco, which depicted The Coronation of the Virgin, also known as The Paradise, and on the large scale of the wall and the room which it was intended for, also bearing in mind the rooms layout and the symbolic nature of the depiction of the Venetian political hierarchy. The jury initially awarded the commission to both Veronese and Bassano as a joint team, but the death of the former in 1588 and the delay in starting work on the part of the latter meant that eventually Tintoretto gained this important project. The exhibition will allow the visitor to compare the work of these great masters of Italian Renaissance art and to experience the splendour of the spectacular decoration of the Doges palace. The great size of the works and the rich colouring of the compositions imbue the exhibition with a monumental feel. Tintoretto. The Paradise is the result of a lengthy and intensive research project which has revealed new information on the great canvas by Tintoretto that normally hangs in the Museums entrance hall and which has now been dated around 1588, as well as on Venetian painting of this period. All this new research is compiled in the interesting catalogue that accompanies the exhibition, which is the result of a collaboration between the three organising museums. The exhibition was first seen at the Louvre, while after its Madrid showing it travels to the Doges Palace in Venice. There, visitors will have the unique opportunity to see the five oil sketches alongside Tintorettos final canvas that has decorated the Sala del Gran Consiglio since that date.

El arte de la fotografa ha entrado de nuevo en las salas del Museo, de la mano del Festival Internacional de Fotografa y Artes Visuales en la que es ya su novena edicin; y lo hace con la obra de uno de los mximos representantes del nuevo arte coreano de vanguardia, Bae Bien-U, y de sus series Pinos y Viento de Tahit. Poco conocido hasta ahora en Espaa su trabajo pudo ser visto por primera vez en nuestro pas en la pasada edicin de ARCO la obra de Bae Bien-U cuenta ya con una amplia repercusin internacional. La exposicin, comisariada por Oliva Mara Rubio, pone de manifiesto la asombrosa calidad de este autor autodidacta que considera como maestros a Edward Weston y Lszl Moholy-Nagy, y cuya obra combina referencias a la tradicin pictrica oriental y al espritu romntico europeo. Siempre interesado por el paisaje, el fotgrafo ha querido resaltar en sus instantneas la presencia de la naturaleza en un mundo dominado por los cambios tecnolgicos y acercar al espectador a otro tiempo, un tiempo en el que la naturaleza permaneca libre. Su obra retrata una naturaleza plcida, amable, que invita a la meditacin a travs de la contemplacin de la belleza de un paisaje no contaminado.

Photography has found its place in the Museums galleries this summer via PHotoEspaa, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, now in its ninth edition. Specifically, the Museum is hosting an exhibition of work by one of the most important figures of cutting-edge Korean Art, Bae Bien-U, represented by his two series Pine Tree and Wind of Tahiti. Little known up to now in Spain his work was seen for the first time in the last edition of ARCO Bae Bien-U has an international following. The exhibition, curated by Oliva Mara Rubio, emphasises the remarkable quality of the work of this self-taught artist who considers his masters to be Edward Weston and Lszlo Maholy-Nagy and whose photography combines references to the tradition of Eastern art with the spirit of European Romanticism. Always interested in landscape, Bae Bien-U aims to highlight the presence of nature in his photographs in a world dominated by technological changes, and to take the spectator into another temporal space, a time in which nature was free. His work depicts a placid, gentle nature and encourages meditation through the contemplation of the beauty of an uncontaminated landscape.

De la serie Pinos se muestran diez fotografas de gran formato, realizadas entre 1985 y 2005 en las colinas de los suburbios de la ciudad de Gyeongju; en ellas captura imgenes de los bosques de pinos que pueblan gran parte del pas y que Bae Bien-U identifica con el espritu del propio pueblo coreano. Los ejemplares fotografiados, con frecuencia en das de niebla y con exposiciones muy prolongadas, desprenden un efecto mstico de fuerte intensidad potica, logrando transmitir una sosegada sensacin de eternidad. El uso prioritario del blanco y negro contribuye a intensificar este efecto. Otras seis imgenes nos acercan a la serie Viento de Tahit, realizada en 2002 a raz de un viaje a la isla; son obras tambin de gran formato pero, en esta ocasin, el artista utiliza el color y se sirve precisamente de la intensidad cromtica para adentrarse de forma diferente en la naturaleza, haciendo nfasis en el detalle y el realismo. Las fotografas de esta serie muestran una vegetacin llena de fuerza y cromatismo, que recuerda las imgenes de estas tierras que plasmaron Gauguin o Matisse.

Ten large-format photographs from the series Pine Tree are on display at the Museum. These were created between 1985 and 2005 on the hills of the suburbs around the city of Gyeongju. They depict the pine forests that cover much of Korea and which the artist identifies with the spirit of the Korean people. The trees photographed, often on misty days and using very long exposures, convey a mystical and highly poetic mood which expresses a feeling of eternity. In general Bae Bien-U uses black and white to intensify this effect. A further six images are from the series Wind of Tahiti, created in 2002 during the artists visit to that island. These are also large-format works but here Bae Bien-U uses colour, exploiting its full chromatic strength to depict a different kind of nature, emphasising detail and realism. The photographs from this series depict a vigorous, colourful type of vegetation which recalls the images of Tahiti by Gauguin and Matisse.

La Naturaleza es el tema escogido este ao para protagonizar el Festival PHotoEspaa, que se ha convertido ya en cita obligada de los veranos madrileos. Bajo este ttulo se hace nfasis en la importancia que ha adquirido el mundo natural en la creacin artstica actual, especialmente en la fotografa. El trabajo de Bae Bien-U, que hasta finales de julio puede verse en el Museo, es un claro ejemplo del inters de los artistas contemporneos por la representacin visual de la naturaleza ms all de su enfoque tradicional. El artista coreano profundiza en su interpretacin e investiga en los nuevos significados que ha incorporado dentro de nuestra sociedad moderna.

Nature is the theme chosen for this years edition of PHotoEspaa, a festival that has become one of the key events in the Madrid summer calendar. The choice of theme encompasses the idea of the importance of nature within current artistic creation, particularly in photography. Bae Bien-Us work can be seen at the Museum until the end of July and is a clear example of the interest on the part of many contemporary artists in depicting nature in a way that goes beyond the traditional. Bae Bien-U has looked deeply into this subject in order to investigate the new meanings that have become attached to the idea of nature in modern society.

El Museo y el mar
Un ao ms, el equipo educativo del Museo invita a nuestro pblico ms joven a acerarse al arte durante las vacaciones escolares con una nueva y refrescante propuesta: El Museo y el mar. Diversin y aprendizaje se anan, de nuevo, en una actividad que, centrada en torno al mar y su representacin en las obras de la Coleccin, quiere descubrir tambin a los nios la importancia de preservar nuestro patrimonio natural y cultural aprendiendo a mirar una obra de arte. Los talleres, en los que se alternan contenidos artsticos y cientficos, potencian adems la creatividad de los alumnos. Los grupos se organizan en funcin de la edad: de 4 a 6 aos, de 7 a 9 y de 10 a 12; y el horario es de 10 de la maana a 2 de la tarde.

Del 17 al 21 de julio, en el marco de los Cursos de Verano de Aranjuez 2006, tendr lugar el curso Perspectivas actuales de la conservacin de las obras de arte en los museos, organizado en colaboracin con la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. El objetivo que propone esta convocatoria es revisar la actualidad de la conservacin del patrimonio artstico, las nuevas tcnicas, metodologas y estrategias de restauracin. El equipo de restauracin del Museo forma parte del grupo de reconocidos profesionales que compartirn con los alumnos sus trabajos e investigaciones: Gabriele Finaldi, subdirector del Museo del Prado, Araceli Gabaldn, doctora en Ciencias Fsicas del Instituto de Patrimonio Histrico Espaol, o Carmen Bernrdez, profesora titular de Historia del Arte de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, entre otros.

Luminismos. La nueva naturalidad en la pintura en torno a 1900

Y preparando ya la prxima temporada, avanzamos aqu la informacin de un curso que tendr lugar en los meses de octubre a diciembre pero cuya matrcula comienza el 19 de septiembre: con motivo de la exposicin Sargent / Sorolla, el Museo, en colaboracin como siempre con las Universidades Complutense y Autnoma de Madrid y la Fundacin Caja Madrid, organiza un ciclo de ocho conferencias que, ms all del trabajo de los dos artistas que protagonizan la muestra, tratar de ofrecer una visin de las corrientes naturalistas en la poca en la que ambos trabajaron y, particularmente, del desarrollo del denominado Luminismo, un fenmeno internacional de la cultura artstica que tuvo lugar a lo largo de algunas dcadas decisivas de la Modernidad; las ponencias nos acercarn a sus protagonistas, su contexto, sus patronos, su filiacin y sus valores ms sobresalientes.

The Museum and the Sea

Once again this year, the Museums education team is inviting young visitors to explore art during the summer holidays. The Museum is offering a new and refreshing summer activity entitled The Museum and the Sea. It combines fun and learning in an activity that focuses on the sea and its depiction in works of art in the Collection with the idea of introducing children to the importance of conserving our natural and cultural heritage through learning to look at works of art. The workshops, which combine artistic and scientific content, also encourage young peoples creative abilities. The groups are organised according to age: from 4 to 6; 7 to 9; and 10 to 12. The workshops take place at 10am and 2pm.

Summer university
From 17 to 21 July and within the context of the Summer Courses at Aranjuez 2006, the course Current Perspectives on the Conservation of Works of Art in Museums will be offered in conjunction with the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos. Its aim is to survey the current situation regarding the conservation of artistic patrimony, new technologies, methodologies and restoration practices. The Museums restoration team will be part of a group of recognised professionals who will discuss their work and research with students. Taking part are Gabriele Finaldi, Deputy Director of the Museo del Prado; Araceli Gabaldn, Doctor in Physical Sciences at the Instituto de Patrimonio Histrico Espaol; and Carmen Bernrdez, Senior Professor of Art History at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid, among others.

Luminism. The new Naturalism in Painting around 1900

Looking forward to next season, please note that registration begins on 19 September for a course that will take place from October to December. It is related to the exhibition Sargent / Sorolla to be held at the Museum and, as usual, is organised in collaboration with the Universidad Complutense, Madrid, the Universidad Autnoma, Madrid, and the Fundacin Caja Madrid. The course consists of a series of eight lectures which look at the work of both Sargent and Sorolla but also aim to offer an overview of naturalist trends in painting at the time in which they worked and in particular the rise of Luminism. This was an international cultural trend which took place during crucial decades for the development of Modern art. The lectures will introduce the leading figures of this movement, their artistic and social contexts, their patrons, artistic affinities and most important characteristics.

Nuestros cuadros viajan

En los prximos meses, varias obras maestras del Museo participan en importantes exposiciones internacionales. Uno de los cuadros emblemticos de la Coleccin Carmen ThyssenBornemisza, La esclusa (1824) de Constable, permanecer hasta septiembre en la Tate Britain, formando parte de la exposicin Constable: Los grandes lienzos. Esta muestra se podr visitar, entre octubre y enero de 2007, en la National Gallery de Washington y, ya en primavera, en la Huntington Library and Art Gallery de San Marino, EE.UU. Tambin a la Tate Britain de Londres viajar en septiembre el Retrato de Enrique VIII de Inglaterra (c.1534-1536) de Hans Holbein el Joven (derecha); el lienzo es una de las piezas principales de Holbein en Inglaterra, exposicin abierta hasta enero. Finalmente, en agosto, otras dos obras destacadas de la Coleccin, Arlequn con espejo (1923) y Cabeza de hombre (19131914), participarn en la muestra Picasso, que celebra el Gteborgs Konstmuseum hasta principios de diciembre.

Our paintings travel

Over the next few months, various paintings from the Museums collection will take part in important international exhibitions. One of the most famous of our paintings, Constables The Lock (1824), will be at Tate Britain until September in the exhibition Constable: the Large Canvases. The exhibition can subsequently be seen between October and January 2007 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the following spring at the Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino. Also travelling to Tate Britain in London in September is the Portrait of Henry VIII of England (ca. 15341536) by Hans Holbein the Younger (left). It will be one of the main works in the exhibition Holbein in England, which runs until January. Finally, in August, another two important works from the Collection, Harlequin with a Mirror (1923) and Head of a Man (1913-1914) will be included in the exhibition Picasso, to be held at the Gteborgs Konstmuseum until the beginning of December.

The Museum this summer

Once again this year the months of July and August will be the ideal time to visit the Museum in a different and more relaxed way. This is true both for the three temporary exhibitions to be held this summer, with their opening hours appropriate to summer temperatures (open
