This exam consists of 5 problems and you have 90 minutes to do all of them. You will be able to bring into the test: a calculator with no networking capability one page of notes 8.5 by 11 inches written both sides something to write with

Please do the followings NOW: Put down your name on the top of every page Sign the bottom of this page about the honor code this midterm will not be graded without your signature You should do all work (including scratch work) on the test sheets provided. If you need extra paper, it will be available at the front of lecture hall. The room is big enough that everyone should SPREAD OUT as much as possible. I do trust all of you not to cheat, but I dont trust your neighbors, so please dont tempt them to do evil! Good luck. Dr. Cheung

1. True or False (20 points) a. (2 point) The power dissipated by an ideal current source depends only on its output current. False. It depends on both the current and the voltage. b. (2 point) The main difference between a distributed circuit and a lumped circuit is the presence of dependent sources. False. The main difference is due to the dependence of the spatial geometry of the circuit elements in a distributed circuit. c. (2 point) Nodal analysis is more general than mesh analysis. True. Mesh analysis cannot be applied to non-planar circuits. d. (2 point) Floating and non-floating sources are treated in exactly the same manner when we apply the superposition principle in analyzing circuits. True. The concept of floating sources is used only in the nodal and mesh analysis, not in superposition. e. (2 point) If a circuit has three meshes and each has a circuit component not included in the other two meshes, it must have at least three independent loops. True. Meshes are loops as well.

f.

(2 point) Algebraic sum of all the voltage following a closed path must be zero. True. It is just KVL.

g. (2 point) A linear system must be both additive and homogeneous. True. It is the definition of a linear system. h. (2 point) We need to use a supermesh if there is a current source connecting to a voltage source. False. We use a supermesh if two meshes share a common current source. The use of supermesh has nothing to do with a voltage source. i. (2 point) To increase the power delivered to a circuit, it is a common practice to use a number of independent voltage sources in parallel. False. We should never put voltages sources in parallel. To increase the power, we should connect them in series.

j.

(2 point) It is impossible to find the equivalent resistance of a non-planar resistor network. False. It is always possible to find the equivalent resistance for any resistor network.

2. Basic Circuit Theory (15 points) a. (4 points) Identify all the nodes in the following circuit.

b. (2 points) Find the number of branches in the circuit from part (a). 7 1 voltage source, 2 current sources and 4 resistors c. (2 points) How many independent loops are there in the circuit from part (a)? b = l + n -1 l = 7 4 + 1 = 4 d. (2 points) Draw a set of independent loops in the circuit from part (a)

e. (6 points) Use the passive sign convention, answer the following questions. Power dissipated by the 10 resistor = I2R=4*10 = 40 W 10 Power dissipated by the 5 resistor = I2R =4*5 = 20 W + Power supplied by the 2A source = _-IV=-2*2*15=-60W For the last question, you will get full credit if you answer 60W also.

3. Resistance (20 points) a. (4 points) Many years ago a string of Christmas tree lights was manufactured in the form shown in Figure (a). Today the lights are manufactured as shown in Figure (b). Is there a good reason for this change? Yes. The parallel configuration in (b) ensures that individual bulbs will not affect others.

b. (6 points) Find the unknown resistor R so that v3 = 12 V V3 = 12V implies that V1 = 28V. In turn, it implies that the current going through the 14 resistor is 28V/14 = 2 A. Since V2 = V3 = 12V, the current going through the 15 resistor is 12V/15 = 0.8 A. Thus current going through the R resistor is 2-0.8 = 1.2 A. Hence R = 12V/1.2A = 10. c. (10 points) Find the equivalent resistance between terminals a and b.

Vo

This circuit involves a Y-network which is neither parallel or in series. By putting a test current soure 1A and calculating Vo, the equivalent resistance can be computed as R = Vo/1A = Vo. Setting the bottom node as ground: KCL @ node a: 1 Vo/30 +(V1-Vo)/10 + (V2-Vo)/20 = 0 -> (11/3)Vo 2V1 -V2 = 20 KCL @ node 1: (Vo-V1)/10 + (V2-V1)/10 - V1/10 = 0 -> Vo 3V1 + V2 = 0 KCL @ node 2: (Vo-V2)/20 +(V1-V2)/10 V2/20 = 0 -> Vo +2V1 - 4V2 = 0 (1)+(2) -> (14/3)Vo 5V1 =20 (4) 4*(1)-(2) -> (41/3)Vo 10V1 = 80 (5) (5)-2*(4) -> (13/3)Vo = 40 -> Vo = 120/13 V = 9.23 V or R = 9.23

4. Nodal Analysis (24 points) a. (4 points) Circle the answer that best completes the sentences below. In nodal analysis we solve for node __________. currents voltages In mesh analysis we write equations using _______. KCL KVL

b. (10 points) Find V1 using nodal analysis. KCL over the super node: 1 = V1+ V2/3 V2 -V1 = 3 Solving them results in V1 = 0. 1A VR1 1

V2 3V 1 3

c. (10 points) Write down all the nodal equations for the following circuit without solving it.

+ Vx V1 V2 V3

The bottom node is treated as the ground node. I ignored the leftmost and rightmost nodes which are trivially known as 12V and 4Vx = (48-4V2)V KCL at V1: (12- V1)/50 = V1/10 + (V1-V2)/50 KCL at V2: (V2-V1)/50 + (V2-V3)/1500 + (V2-12)/100 = 5I x = 5*(12- V1)/50=(12- V1)/10 KCL at V3: (V3-V2)/1500 + V3/40 = (4Vx-V3)/20 = (48-4V2-V3)/20 No point will be deducted if you include Ix or Vx in your equations.

5. Mesh Analysis and superposition (20 points) a. (10 points) Find Io and Vo in the circuit using Mesh Analysis Top mesh: i3 = 2A (1) Right Bottom mesh: 4(i2-i3)+2i2+6(i2-i1) = 0 or 12i2-4i3-6i1 = 0 (2) Left Bottom mesh: -5 + 6 i1 + 6(i1- i2) = 0 or -5 + 12 i1 6i2 = 0 (3) Solving (1), (2), and (3) yields i1 = 1 and i2 = 7/6 So V0 = 6(i1- i2) = -1V i3
