Reagents
1.

Dil.Sulphuric Acid (10% W/V)

2.

2.14% W/V Sodium Periodate Solution

3.

Sodium Bicarbonate

4.

0.2 N Sodium Arsenite

5.

20% W/V solution Pottasium Iodide

6.

0.1 N Iodine

Procedure
Weigh accurately about 0.4 gm of sample and dissolve
in
sufficient amount of water and dilute to 100 ml in a volumetric
flask.
Pipette 10 ml of this solution into a
stoppered
erlyenemeyer flask, add 20 ml of 2.14% W/V solution of Sodium
periodate and 2 ml of 10% W/v sulphuric acid and heat on water
bath for 15 mins. Cool, add 3 gm of Sodium bicarbonate and 25 ml
of 0.2 N Sodium Arsenite, mix add 5 ml of 20% W/v solutin of
Potassium Iodide, allow to stand for 15 mins. and titrate with
0.1 N iodine until the first trace of yellow colour appears.
Carry out a black experiment in the same way omitting the sample.
The difference between the titration represents the amount of 0.1
N iodine required.
Calculation
1 ml. of 0.1 N iodine = 0.001822 gm of C6H14O6
