Altair HyperWorks for the Oil & Gas Industry

HyperWorks is a highly integrated suite of engineering software. It provides a comprehensive, open-architecture CAE toolset to create and develop products faster. Over the last 20 years, the focus of HyperWorks development has been to increase engineering analysis productivity and enable CAE analysis for innovative and reliable design direction. The software components of HyperWorks suite are available through a patented licensing system (HyperWorks Units) that delivers exceptional value. HyperWorks software suite covers the six major areas below: Modeling and Assembly for CAE analysis Robust Design and Optimization CAE Analysis (solvers) Analysis result visualization and Reporting Process Automation and Data Management Manufacturing simulation

HyperWorks interfaces with many popular solver including ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, Flexcom, Sesam, NASTRAN, etc. Its open-architecture allows rapid development of interfaces to many customer-specific codes by Altair or by the customer themselves.

Altair HyperStudy
HyperStudy is a parametric study and multi-disciplinary optimization tool for robust product design. It provides an easy-to-use interface for Design of Experiments (DOE), stochastic simulations and several optimization techniques. Through a deep integration into the HyperWorks suite, it provides direct interface to a broad range of commercial and customer-specific solvers.

Highlights:
DOE study types include Full Factorial, Fractional, Taguchi, Box-Behnken, Placket-Burman, Latin HyperCube, User-defined, etc. Response surface approximations for DOE include Least Square regression, Moving Least Square, HyperKriging, etc. Optimization Methods include Sequential response surface, feasible directions and an API for user-written optimization methods.

Altair HyperView
HyperView is a multi-window post-processing and visualization environment for engineering analysis. It enables engineers to visualize data interactively as well as automate standardized post-processing activities and report generation using templates. HyperView can automatically generate HTML-based or MS/Office-based reports. HyperView has a vast library of math functions and users can build custom math functions. The plotting client in HyperView handles a range of engineering plot types. As part of the HyperWorks suite, HyperView offers the same broad range of interfaces to CAE solvers.

Altair HyperWorks Process Manager

HyperWorks Process Manager enables rapid development and deployment of process automation applications in the CAE domain. It is a programmable workflow manager that guides users through standard work processes. The benefits of Process Manager implementation include propagation of best practices and productivity gains through reduced manual inputs, user guidance for tasks, rapid reanalysis, etc.

PBS Professional for the Oil & Gas Industry

TM

Petroleum companies rely on high performance computing resources to make mission-critical exploration decisions. Geo-statistical modeling, reservoir simulations, remote sensing, and photogrammetry require massive compute resources and long runtimes. Powerful, easily accessed compute resources are therefore essential for exploration decisions that have significant monetary consequences. PBS Professional is software for compute resource management that enables efficient and cost-effective use of High Performance Computing (HPC) to improve drilling results, increase productivity, and reduce time-to-decision for Petroleum companies. PBS Professional provides a simple, consistent user interface, enhances resiliency of HPC environments, optimizes the utilization of HPC assets, and minimizes job turnaround times.

Case Studies
Pipe Reeling Reliability
Use of HyperStudy to predict buckling in rigid reeled pipeline operation is described in Paper IPC04-0733, International Pipeline Conference, 2004. This work was a joint effort of Technip Offshore UK Ltd and Altair Engineering. HyperStudy helped to define a response surface based model of the system with a small number of computer simulations. Probability of pipe failure during reeling was then assessed using Monte Carlo simulations in HyperStudy. Many different parameter variations, such as thickness of pipe sections, material properties, etc. can be considered in making reliable predictions of buckling in the pipe reeling operation. The ability to reliably predict buckling and other failures prior to the actual pipe reeling operation helps avoid costly down times and excessive repair costs.

Expandable Sand Screen Design

CAE based optimization methods helped in creating a large scale bi-stable geometry that would deploy symmetrically when implemented with standard oil-field steels. Response surface based optimization in HyperStudy was used to automatically define cell design parameters to achieve bistable deployment. Once set up, this method provides a highly automated method for design engineers to tune the system for a wide variety of applications. Expandable Sand Screens allow fast installations, improved production and lowered drawdown in open hole drilling.

Steep Wave Riser Optimization

HyperStudy is used to define an optimization setup using MCS Flexcom as the solver to predict wave riser behavior. Design variables such as riser wall thickness, buoyancy volume, riser length are considered. HyperStudy provides intuitive use of techniques such as Latin HyperCube sampling and Moving Least Squares approximation to model system response for different conditions and design variable values. This case study resulted in a 38% lower cost of wave riser design to operate acceptably under different ocean current conditions.
