What is Propofol?

PropoIol slows the activity oI your brain and nervous system.


PropoIol is used to help you relax beIore and during general anesthesia Ior surgery or other
medical procedure. PropoIol is also used in critically ill patients who require a breathing tube
connected to a ventilator (a machine that moves air in and out oI the lungs when a person cannot
breathe on their own).
PropoIol may be used Ior other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Propofol?
ou should not receive this medication iI you are allergic to propoIol or to eggs, soy products, or
soybeans.
BeIore you receive propoIol, tell your doctor iI you have epilepsy or other seizure disorder, high
triglycerides (Iats in the blood), liver disease, or kidney disease.
our caregivers will monitor your heart Iunction, blood pressure, and breathing while you are
under the eIIects oI propoIol.
Tell your caregivers at once iI you have a serious side eIIect such as seizure, weak or shallow
breathing, Iast or slow heart rate, or pain, swelling, blisters, or skin changes where the medicine
was injected.
BeIore you receive propoIol, tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially
chloral hydrate (Somnote), droperidol (Inapsine), a sedative, or a narcotic pain medication such
as Ientanyl (Actiq, Duragesic).
PropoIol can cause severe drowsiness or dizziness, which may last Ior several hours. ou will
need someone to drive you home aIter your surgery or procedure. Do not drive yourselI or do
anything that requires you to be awake and alert Ior at least 24 hours aIter you have been treated
with propoIol.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Propofol?
ou should not receive this medication iI you are allergic to propoIol or to eggs, soy products, or
soybeans.
II you have certain conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to saIely receive
this medication. BeIore you receive propoIol, tell your doctor iI you have:
O epllepsy or oLher selzure dlsorder
O hlgh Lrlglycerldes (faLs ln Lhe blood)
O llver dlsease or
O kldney dlsease
DA pregnancy category B. PropoIol is not expected to be harmIul to an unborn baby. However,
tell your doctor iI you are pregnant beIore you are treated with propoIol.
PropoIol can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. BeIore you receive this
medication, tell your doctor iI you are breast-Ieeding a baby.

What are the possible side effects of Propofol?
Get emergency medical help iI you have any oI these signs oI an allergic reaction: hives;
diIIiculty breathing; swelling oI your Iace, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once iI you have a serious side eIIect such as:
O pain, swelling, blisters, or skin changes where the medicine was injected
O seizure (convulsions)
O weak or shallow breathing; or
O Iast or slow heart rate
Less serious side eIIects may include:
O nausea
O cough
O slight burning or stinging around the IV needle
O mild itching or skin rash
O numbness or tingly Ieeling
O conIusion, agitation, anxiety
O muscle pain; or
O discolored urine

What other drugs affect Propofol?
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially:
O chloral hydraLe (SomnoLe)
O droperldol (lnapslne)
O a barblLuraLe such as amobarblLal (AmyLal) buLabarblLal (uLlsol) mephobarblLal (Mebaral)
secobarblLal (Seconal) or phenobarblLal (SolfoLon)
O dlazepam (vallum) or slmllar medlclnes such as alprazolam (xanax) chlordlazepoxlde (Llbrlum)
clorazepaLe (1ranxene) esLazolam (roSom) flurazepam (ualmane) lorazepam (ALlvan)
mldazolam (versed) Lemazepam (8esLorll) Lrlazolam (alclon) and oLhers or
O a narcoLlc medlcaLlon such as fenLanyl (AcLlq uurageslc) hydrocodone (LorLab vlcodln)

doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal
products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start a new medication without telling
your doctor.

ow should I take Propofol?
PropoIol is given as an injection through a needle placed into a vein. ou will receive this
injection in a hospital or surgical setting.
ou will relax and Iall asleep very quickly aIter propoIol is injected.
our caregivers will monitor your heart Iunction, blood pressure, and breathing while you are
under the eIIects oI propoIol.
