S A S G

On behalf of SASG Executive Committee, I look forward to welcoming you in Saudi Arabia! Organizing Committee, SASG 2011

why SASG ?
This event will gather the leading scientific, industrial and utilities leaders in Middle East to forge partnerships and develop policies and strategies on energy efficiency implementation.
Why Smart Grid?
In principle, the Smart Grid (SG) is a simple upgrade of 20th century power grids which generally "broadcast" power from a few central power generators to a large number of users, to instead be capable of routing power in more optimal ways to respond to a very wide range of conditions, and to charge a premium to those that use energy during peak hours. Smart grid functions Before examining particular technology a proposal can be understood in terms of what it is being required to do. The governments and utilities funding development of grid modernization have to define the functions required for smart grids. But a modern smart grid must have 1. Be able to heal itself 2. Motivate consumers to actively participate in operations of the grid 3. Resist attack 4. Provide higher quality power that will save money wasted from outages 5. Accommodate all generation and storage options 6. Enable electricity markets to flourish 7. Run more efficiently 8. Enable higher penetration of intermittent power generation sources Features Existing and planned implementations of smart grids provide a wide range of features to perform the required functions as 1. Demand response support 2. Greater resilience to loading 3. Decentralization of power generation 4. Price signaling to consumers Technology The bulk of smart grid technologies are already adapted for use in grid operation. In general used in other applications such as manufacturing and telecom and are being smart grid technology can be grouped into five key areas: 1. Integrated communications 2. Sensing and measurement 3. Phasor measurement units 4. Smart meters 5. Advanced control and Power system automation

Why Substation Automation?

Substation automation (SA), if properly implemented, offers tangible benefits which can fulfill the requirements of reduce costs while simultaneously improving quality of supply. Benefit 1. Reduced Installation Costs 2. Reduced Operation & maintenance Costs 3. Reduction in Lost Re venue due to Outages. 4. Enhanced Functionality and Flexibility 5. Improved Asset Management
