-5.1- BS 5.

1: Kṛṣṇa who is known as Govinda is the


Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful
īśvaraḥ paramaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no
sac-cid-ānanda-vigrahaḥ other origin and He is the prime cause of all
anādir ādir govindaḥ causes.

sarva-kāraṇa-kāraṇam
BS 5.29: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
the first progenitor who is tending the cows,
-5.29- yielding all desire, in abodes built with spiritual
cintāmaṇi-prakara-sadmasu kalpa-vṛkṣa- gems, surrounded by millions of purpose trees,
always served with great reverence and affection
lakṣāvṛteṣu surabhir abhipālayantam by hundreds of thousands of lakṣmīs or gopīs.
lakṣmī-sahasra-śata-sambhrama-sevyamānaḿ
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi BS 5.30: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
who is adept in playing on His flute, with
blooming eyes like lotus petals with head decked
-5.30- with peacock's feather, with the figure of beauty
veṇuḿ kvaṇantam aravinda-dalāyatākṣam- tinged with the hue of blue clouds, and His unique
loveliness charming millions of Cupids.
barhāvataḿsam asitāmbuda-sundarāńgam
kandarpa-koṭi-kamanīya-viśeṣa-śobhaḿ
BS 5.31: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi round whose neck is swinging a garland of flowers
beautified with the moon-locket, whose two hands
are adorned with the flute and jeweled ornaments,
-5.31- who always revels in pastimes of love, whose
ālola-candraka-lasad-vanamālya-vaḿśī- graceful threefold-bending form of Śyāmasundara
is eternally manifest.
ratnāńgadaḿ praṇaya-keli-kalā-vilāsam
śyāmaḿ tri-bhańga-lalitaḿ niyata-prakāśaḿ
BS 5.32: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi whose transcendental form is full of bliss, truth,
substantiality and is thus full of the most dazzling
splendor. Each of the limbs of that transcendental
-5.32- figure possesses in Himself, the full-fledged
ańgāni yasya sakalendriya-vṛtti-manti functions of all the organs, and eternally sees,
maintains and manifests the infinite universes,
paśyanti pānti kalayanti ciraḿ jaganti
both spiritual and mundane.
ānanda-cinmaya-sad-ujjvala-vigrahasya
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi
-5.33- BS 5.33: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
who is inaccessible to the Vedas, but obtainable by
advaitam acyutam anādim ananta-rūpam
pure unalloyed devotion of the soul, who is
ādyaḿ purāṇa-puruṣaḿ nava-yauvanaḿ ca without a second, who is not subject to decay, is
vedeṣu durlabham adurlabham ātma-bhaktau without a beginning, whose form is endless, who is
the beginning, and the eternal puruṣa; yet He is a
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi person possessing the beauty of blooming youth.

-5.34- BS 5.34: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,


panthās tu koṭi-śata-vatsara-sampragamyo only the tip of the toe of whose lotus feet is
approached by the yogīs who aspire after the
vāyor athāpi manaso muni-puńgavānām transcendental and betake themselves to
so 'py asti yat-prapada-sīmny avicintya-tattve prāṇāyāma by drilling the respiration; or by the
jñānīs who try to find out the nondifferentiated
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi Brahman by the process of elimination of the
mundane, extending over thousands of millions of
years.

BS 5.35: He is an undifferentiated entity as there is


-5.35- no distinction between potency and the possessor
eko 'py asau racayituḿ jagad-aṇḍa-koṭiḿ thereof. In His work of creation of millions of
worlds, His potency remains inseparable. All the
yac-chaktir asti jagad-aṇḍa-cayā yad-antaḥ universes exist in Him and He is present in His
aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-stham- fullness in every one of the atoms that are scattered
throughout the universe, at one and the same time.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi Such is the primeval Lord whom I adore.

-5.36- BS 5.36: I adore the same Govinda, the primeval


yad-bhāva-bhāvita-dhiyo manujās tathaiva Lord, in whose praise men, who are imbued with
devotion, sing the mantra-sūktas told by the Vedas,
samprāpya rūpa-mahimāsana-yāna-bhūṣāḥ by gaining their appropriate beauty, greatness,
sūktair yam eva nigama-prathitaiḥ stuvanti thrones, conveyances and ornaments.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.37- BS 5.37: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,


residing in His own realm, Goloka, with Rādhā,
ānanda-cinmaya-rasa-pratibhāvitābhis
resembling His own spiritual figure, the
tābhir ya eva nija-rūpatayā kalābhiḥ embodiment of the ecstatic potency possessed of
the sixty-four artistic activities, in the company of
goloka eva nivasaty akhilātma-bhūto
Her confidantes [sakhīs], embodiments of the
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi extensions of Her bodily form, permeated and
vitalized by His ever-blissful spiritual rasa.
-5.38- BS 5.38: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
who is Śyāmasundara, Kṛṣṇa Himself with
premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena
inconceivable innumerable attributes, whom the
santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti pure devotees see in their heart of hearts with the
yaḿ śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpaḿ eye of devotion tinged with the salve of love.

govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.39- BS 5.39: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,


who manifested Himself personally as Kṛṣṇa and
rāmādi-mūrtiṣu kalā-niyamena tiṣṭhan the different avatāras in the world in the forms of
nānāvatāram akarod bhuvaneṣu kintu Rāma, Nṛsiḿha, Vāmana, etc., as His subjective
portions.
kṛṣṇaḥ svayaḿ samabhavat paramaḥ pumānyo
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.40-
BS 5.40: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,
yasya prabhā prabhavato jagad-aṇḍa-koṭi- whose effulgence is the source of the
koṭiṣv aśeṣa-vasudhādi vibhūti-bhinnam nondifferentiated Brahman mentioned in the
Upaniṣads, being differentiated from the infinity of
tad brahma niṣkalam anantam aśeṣa-bhūtaḿ glories of the mundane universe appears as the
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi indivisible, infinite, limitless, truth.

-5.41- BS 5.41: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,


who is the absolute substantive principle being the
māyā hi yasya jagad-aṇḍa-śatāni sūte ultimate entity in the form of the support of all
traiguṇya-tad-viṣaya-veda-vitāyamānā existence whose external potency embodies the
threefold mundane qualities, viz., sattva, rajas, and
sattvāvalambi-para-sattvaḿ viśuddha-sattvam- tamas and diffuses the Vedic knowledge regarding
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi the mundane world.

-5.42- BS 5.42: I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord,


whose glory ever triumphantly dominates the
ānanda-cinmaya-rasātmatayā manaḥsu mundane world by the activity of His own
yaḥ prāṇināḿ pratiphalan smaratām upetya pastimes, being reflected in the mind of
recollecting souls as the transcendental entity of
līlāyitena bhuvanāni jayaty ajasram- ever-blissful cognitive rasa.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi
-5.43- BS 5.43: Lowest of all is located Devī-dhāma
[mundane world], next above it is Maheśa-dhāma
goloka-nāmni nija-dhāmni tale ca tasya
[abode of Maheśa]; above Maheśa-dhāma is
devi maheśa-hari-dhāmasu teṣu teṣu placed Hari-dhāma [abode of Hari] and above
te te prabhāva-nicayā vihitāś ca yena them all is located Kṛṣṇa's own realm named
Goloka. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, who
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi has allotted their respective authorities to the rulers
of those graded realms.

-5.44-
sṛsṭ ̣i-sthiti-pralaya-sādhana-śaktir ekā BS 5.44: The external potency Māyā who is of the
nature of the shadow of the cit potency, is
chāyeva yasya bhuvanāni bibharti durgā worshiped by all people as Durgā, the creating,
icchānurūpam api yasya ca ceṣṭate sā preserving and destroying agency of this mundane
world. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda in
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi accordance with whose will Durgā conducts
herself.
-5.45-
kṣīraḿ yathā dadhi vikāra-viśeṣa-yogāt BS 5.45: Just as milk is transformed into curd by
the action of acids, but yet the effect curd is neither
sañjāyate na hi tataḥ pṛthag asti hetoḥ same as, nor different from, its cause, viz., milk, so
yaḥ śambhutām api tathā samupaiti kāryād I adore the primeval Lord Govinda of whom the
state of Śambhu is a transformation for the
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi performance of the work of destruction.

-5.46- BS 5.46: The light of one candle being


dīpārcir eva hi daśāntaram abhyupetya communicated to other candles, although it burns
separately in them, is the same in its quality. I
dīpāyate vivṛta-hetu-samāna-dharmā adore the primeval Lord Govinda who exhibits
yas tādṛg eva hi ca viṣṇutayā vibhāti Himself equally in the same mobile manner in His
various manifestations.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

BS 5.47: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda who


-5.47- assuming His own great subjective form, who
yaḥ kāraṇārṇava-jale bhajati sma yoga- bears the name of Śeṣa, replete with the all-
accommodating potency, and reposing in the
nidrām ananta-jagad-aṇḍa-sa-roma-kūpaḥ
Causal Ocean with the infinity of the world in the
ādhāra-śaktim avalambya parāḿ sva-mūrtiḿ pores of His hair, enjoys creative sleep [yoga-
nidrā].
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi
-5.48- BS 5.48: Brahmā and other lords of the mundane
worlds, appearing from the pores of hair of Mahā-
yasyaika-niśvasita-kālam athāvalambya
Viṣṇu, remain alive as long as the duration of one
jīvanti loma-vilajā jagad-aṇḍa-nāthāḥ exhalation of the latter [Mahā-Viṣṇu]. I adore the
viṣṇur mahān sa iha yasya kalā-viśeṣo primeval Lord Govinda of whose subjective
personality Mahā-Viṣṇu is the portion of portion.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

BS 5.49: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda from


-5.49- whom the separated subjective portion Brahmā
bhāsvān yathāśma-śakaleṣu nijeṣu tejaḥ receives his power for the regulation of the
mundane world, just as the sun manifests some
svīyam kiyat prakaṭayaty api tadvad atra portion of his own light in all the effulgent gems
brahmā ya eṣa jagad-aṇḍa-vidhāna-kartā that bear the names of sūryakānta, etc.

govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.50- BS 5.50: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda,


whose lotus feet are always held by Gaṇeśa upon
yat-pāda-pallava-yugaḿ vinidhāya kumbha- the pair of tumuli protruding from his elephant
dvandve praṇāma-samaye sa gaṇādhirājaḥ head in order to obtain power for his function of
destroying all the obstacles on the path of progress
vighnān vihantum alam asya jagat-trayasya of the three worlds.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.51- BS 5.51: The three worlds are composed of the


agnir mahi gaganam ambu marud diśaś ca nine elements, viz., fire, earth, ether, water, air,
direction, time, soul and mind. I adore the
kālas tathātma-manasīti jagat-trayāṇi primeval Lord Govinda from whom they originate,
yasmād bhavanti vibhavanti viśanti yaḿ ca in whom they exist and into whom they enter at
the time of the universal cataclysm.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

BS 5.52: The sun who is the king of all the planets,


-5.52- full of infinite effulgence, the image of the good
yac-cakṣur eṣa savitā sakala-grahāṇāḿ soul, is as the eye of this world. I adore the
primeval Lord Govinda in pursuance of whose
rājā samasta-sura-mūrtir aśeṣa-tejāḥ order the sun performs his journey mounting the
yasyājñayā bhramati sambhṛta-kāla-cakro wheel of time.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi
-5.53- BS 5.53: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, by
whose conferred power are maintained the
dharmo 'tha pāpa-nicayaḥ śrutayas tapāḿsi
manifested potencies, that are found to exist, of all
brahmādi-kīṭa-patagāvadhayaś ca jīvāḥ virtues, all vices, the Vedas, the penances and all
yad-datta-mātra-vibhava-prakaṭa-prabhāvā jīvas, from Brahmā to the meanest insect.

govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

-5.54- BS 5.54: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, who


burns up to their roots all fruitive activities of
yas tv indragopam athavendram aho sva-karma- those who are imbued with devotion and
bandhānurūpa-phala-bhājanam ātanoti impartially ordains for each the due enjoyment of
the fruits of one's activities, of all those who walk
karmāṇi nirdahati kintu ca bhakti-bhājāḿ in the path of work, in accordance with the chain
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi of their previously performed works, no less in the
case of the tiny insect that bears the name of
indragopa than in that of Indra, king of the devas.

-5.55- BS 5.55: I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, the


yaḿ krodha-kāma-sahaja-praṇayādi-bhīti- meditators of whom, by meditating upon Him
under the sway of wrath, amorous passion, natural
vātsalya-moha-guru-gaurava-sevya-bhāvaiḥ friendly love, fear, parental affection, delusion,
sañcintya tasya sadṛśīḿ tanum āpur ete reverence and willing service, attain to bodily
forms befitting the nature of their contemplation.
govindam ādi-puruṣaḿ tam ahaḿ bhajāmi

BS 5.56: I worship that transcendental seat, known


-5.56- as Śvetadvīpa where as loving consorts the
śriyaḥ kāntāḥ kāntaḥ parama-puruṣaḥ kalpa-taravo Lakṣmīs in their unalloyed spiritual essence
practice the amorous service of the Supreme Lord
drumā bhūmiś cintāmaṇi-gaṇa-mayi toyam Kṛṣṇa as their only lover; where every tree is a
amṛtam transcendental purpose tree; where the soil is the
kathā gānaḿ nāṭyaḿ gamanam api vaḿśī priya- purpose gem, all water is nectar, every word is a
sakhi song, every gait is a dance, the flute is the favorite
attendant, effulgence is full of transcendental bliss
cid-ānandaḿ jyotiḥ param api tad āsvādyam api ca and the supreme spiritual entities are all enjoyable
sa yatra kṣīrābdhiḥ sravati surabhībhyaś ca su- and tasty, where numberless milk cows always
mahān emit transcendental oceans of milk; where there is
eternal existence of transcendental time, who is
nimeṣārdhākhyo vā vrajati na hi yatrāpi samayaḥ
ever present and without past or future and hence
bhaje śvetadvīpaḿ tam aham iha golokam iti yaḿ is not subject to the quality of passing away even
for the space of half a moment. That realm is
vidantas te santaḥ kṣiti-virala-cārāḥ katipaye
known as Goloka only to a very few self-realized
souls in this world.
