In the 1970s the Sanko Company produced a type of drug called a statin. The statin
was produced in a fermentation reaction. The drug was designed to lower the level of
cholesterol in the blood. This reduces the risk of heart attacks.
(a) Why are drugs tested before they are given to humans?

(b) A Scandinavian study on a statin looked at the effect of taking the statin on the
number of heart attacks in a given time. The study produced the following results.

Dominic heated iron wool (fine iron wire) and plunged it into a gas jar of chlorine.
(a) The iron glowed brightly when it was plunged into the chlorine.
What does this show about the reaction between the iron and chlorine?
.......................................................................................................................................

(b) Write the balanced equation for this reaction, which produces iron(III) chloride,
FeCl3.
.......................................................................................................................................
(2)
(c) Chlorine reacts with iron faster than bromine does.
Bromine reacts with iron faster than iodine does.
Use the electronic configurations of chlorine and bromine to explain why the halogens
become less reactive as the atomic number increases.

(d) Dominic used iron wool in his experiment. When he repeated it with a lump of iron
of the same mass, the reaction was much slower.
