Whats Inside?

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Leaders inspire others to leadership We at JSB have taken up the challenging task of creating leaders not followers. The only thing that will enable us to do that is constant innovation. "Anything that works is obsolete" is the mantra of JSB. In our endeavor to create future business leaders, we at JSB have decided to do things differently. At JSB we understand that never in the course of history, has the world changed so fast. The pace of change is frenetic, boundaries are collapsing, and humanity as whole is getting a much clearer and homogeneous identity. Business activities have always been the catalyst of economic growth and in this context business leaders have always led from the front. We realized early on that India has the potential to become a trainer for IT, Management and English for the rest of the world particularly for the non English speaking countries. To convert this potential into performance a knowledge park was envisaged where institutes of higher professional learning will be set up and students and teachers from all across the globe will participate in the process of creating future global leaders. The Jyotimoy Knowledge Park has consistently focused on getting the best faculties from both academia and industry. Indian Expats and foreign professors are a part of the faculty team which also has an enviable collection of the best minds from the country. JSB understands that merit has to be acknowledged and rewarded and has instituted a unique scholarship scheme. JSB lays equal importance on Teaching, Training, Consulting, and Research. Training, consulting and research activities enable JSB to remain in touch with the industry and the students benefit from this industry connects. JSBs EDP/MDP programs are already gaining popularity and have participation from members of large corporate organizations some of them from among fortune 500 companies too. Placement activities are one of the highest priorities at JSB and a dedicated team under a faculty member works relentlessly towards this. The Overseas advisors & placement board of JSB is working internationally to connect JSBites to challenging opportunities across the globe. With the key denominators in place the journey of JSB is going to be worth watching. I welcome all serious students of business, and business gurus to come on board and be a part of this phenomenon. Dr. Partha Sarathi Ganguli Ph.D President

Focus
Capacity Development in Management Education
Capacity is an essential lubricant of managerial development, more important even than their specialization. Capacity is defined as the ability of individuals to perform functions, solve problems, and set and achieve objectives in a sustainable manner. The term capacity building or capacity development describes the task of establishing human capacity. Whatever the terminology, capacity building remains the most challenging function of overall development of a management student. It is observed that in most of the management institutes, the model followed for management programme is mere extension of the system followed for College Education(CE). The two differ in a sense that in CE the stress is on developing the writing skill for reproducing in the examination, whereas in Management Training(MT), the emphasis is more on providing practical exposure through projects, case studies, role plays and summer internships. However, main stress in MT continues to be memorizing and reproducing the course work, whereas the focus should be on implementing the knowledge, and this requires a typical wisdom, not available in books. When the students come out of the management schools and join a job, certain capacities are required to be built in them to deal with the real world, particularly to grow in their professional career and participate in the national development. The capacities required to be built in them during their programme duration are: the capacity for research or inquiry; the capacity for creativity and innovation; the capacity on learning how to decide on one course of action out of many alternatives; the capacity for entrepreneurial leadership; and the capacity for moral leadership. Management is basically getting things done through people and for getting things done, effectiveness is must. Capacity development is meant for providing this wisdom of effectiveness in dealing with persons and situations to solve problems and optimize results. What is needed today is a revised focus, one that views MT as sustainable process of expanding the capacities of students. Hence, our management education need to re-orient itself to help students to know what strengths they own, as every human being born on this planet has been blessed with certain strengths.

MDP @ JSB
Jyotirmoy School of Business evolved from
the needs of the students of eastern India to have access to a truly international standard B-school committed to its role in creating young leaders with an understanding of evolving economies. JSB has its global perspective through its innovative programmes, outstanding faculty and thought leadership. We now live in a world of limitless opportunities, and we can shape our individual destinies the way we want them to be, provided we have the courage, tenacity and the capacity for hard work to undertake the challenges which come our way. This is a solitary journey, and your greatest aid will be the skills and knowledge you will pick up on the way. Hence besides offering a full time PGDM programme approved by AICTE, JSB offers short duration Management Development Programmes to the professionals of different sectors of the industry operating at different levels in the organisational hierarchy. JSB Batch Night

My experience at JSB
After the successful completion of 10+2 , I nurtured the dream of pursuing management course from a reputed institute. So I started researching on it. Soon I realised that the reality is pretty different from what it is shown in the advertisements. So even after qualifying CAT 2007 and getting a respectable Score I did not pursue MBA. Instead I completed my graduation with a 71 % Marks from Calcutta University in the same year and appeared for Larsen & Toubro Exam. I got selected and went to Delhi. But my desire of pursuing management was still within me. I started looking for a B-school. To my utter dismay I found that not only the fees were very steep but also the ROI was very less. Finally after 2 years I found a B school which really matched my aspirations and it was JSB. It provided me with scholarship stipends and lot more which many B -schools promise, but fail to keep their so called promise! Today, after completing my first year at this institute I can proudly say that it is one of the best emerging B. Schools in this part of the country. Though a very tough year in terms of academics with 19 credits to be achieved, our ever helpful and co-operative faculties made this thorny trail a cake-walk. Campus Life@ JSB is great. The ambience is excellent. It is like an extended family. A home away from home! Now sitting at the Standard Chartered office as a Summer Intern makes me feel elated. I had taken the right decision to join a new Institute like JSB. I wish good luck to Jsb in its indefatigable endeavour to improve and emerge as the the best in the industry. I encourage all the management aspirants whom dream to make it big, to join our institute, JSB. Vijay Roy PGDM - 2nd Year
