Synopsis

Introduction: Natural ventilation is the single most cost effective building design concept. Natural ventilation is defined as passively supplying outdoor air to a building interior for ventilation and cooling. With proper design, appropriate to the building location and use, natural ventilation can replace all or part of a mechanical system, thereby reducing construction, energy and operating costs. Most importantly, natural ventilation strategies improve indoor air quality and improve occupant comfort, which translates directly to healthier, more productive building occupants. Air inside room get polluted because of following reasons, 1. Breathing of human beings. 2. Odours occurred due to sweating. 3. Use of volatile substances. 4. Dead cells from human body. 5. Polishing of furniture. Need of Study: By proper designing of buildings we can effectively ventilate the building naturally. For this reason it is necessary to study planning & orientation of buildings. By use of mechanical ventilation we can easily achieve comfort conditions. But for mechanical ventilation consumption of electrical energy is must. Though energy generation & consumption is increasing with great speed to save environment providing natural ventilation is best solution for energy conservation & as result environment conservation. Aims & Objectives: To find out comfort conditions for institutional buildings in tropical climate. Scope & Limitations: Data collection for, 1. Climatic Zones in India, 2. Comfort conditions & need, 3. Ventilation requirements for different buildings, 4. Components of institutional buildings & ventilation required. Case studies for, 1. Traditional Indian buildings, 2. Earlier civilization buildings in Global Context, 3. Present buildings in Indian context. Analysis of, 1. Ventilation requirements for institutional buildings. Methodology: Data collection from books on natural ventilation, Individual case studies & studies done by different institutions, Analysis from case studies for institutional buildings, Articles from internet and newspaper.
