The Uniform Crime Report has
been released for Shamong Town-
ship and the state.
According to the state website,
crime is up 1 percent overall for
the state. The crime report meas-
ures offenses committed from
Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2010.
Our latest crime data shows a
slight increase in the overall
crime rate in New Jersey, Attor-
ney General Paula T. Dow said in
a press release on the state web-
site.
We must be aggressive and
smart in fighting crime, especial-
ly during this economic crisis fac-
ing our state and nation.
In Shamong, crime incidents
went up overall from the previous
year.
In 2009, the township had 38 in-
cidences of crime. In 2010, it had
64. Each crime was broken down
into categories of violent or non-
violent crimes.
Shamong had no violent
crimes, which are constituted as
murder, rape, robbery and aggra-
vated assault. In the previous
year, there was a rape and four
cases of aggravated assault.
The spike in crime falls under
the nonviolent category. In the
Non-violent crimes increase
Crime incidents jumped from 33 in 2009 to 64 in 2010

Two stay-at-home moms,
Nicole Yohnson and Kara Pre-
vost, had the idea to come togeth-
er and combine their passions.
They formed Southern Scents
and Specialties.
The business, which has only
been around two months and is
already a success, sells home-
made candles and baked goods.
The women also donate $1 from
each sale to the Burlington Coun-
ty K-9 Search and Rescue Team, of
which they are members.
Kara and I met through the K-
9 team and became good friends,
Yohnson said.
She liked to bake; she always
made delicious stuff and brought
it to the meet and greets. We col-
lided our talents and combined
the two. We decided to donate $1
of everything we sold to the K-9
team.
Yohnson started her home-
made candle business in 2007
with her husband, but it became
too much with her husband work-
ing full-time and her being a stay-
at-home mom.
Prevost had her baked good
business, Sugar Mommas, for 20
months before the two met.
My dog had 12 puppies, two
litters, Prevost said. One of the
puppies, Patton, went to Nicole.
I still have Patton, Yohnson
said. He does human-remains
detection now. We had a special
connection through the K-9 team,
and we just talked about doing
this business together. I was like

so we said lets do it. We were
both career women, and we were
just sitting home, so we thought
this was a good way to make some
extra money.
Southern Scents and Special-
ties was started two months ago,
and has been busy since.
The business offers homemade
candles in many scents ranging
in price from $4 to $12. It also has
a variety of baked goods to
choose from.
When the order comes in, I try
to get it out in two days, Yohnson
said. It can be time consuming.
Ive been baking since I was 6.
I used to do it with my grand-
mother, Prevost said. So, I love
baking. Its like my sanctuary.
When Im stressed out and want
some alone time, I bake. Depend-
ing on the orders, I pretty much
bake every day. I can bake pretty
much anything; I do cakes, cup-
cakes, cookies and other stuff. I
have my own chocolate chip cook-
ie recipe that I perfected, that
took me about five years. Every-
one always wants the recipe, but I
wont give it away.
Right now, a lot of the business
that Southern Scents and Special-
ties does is through word of
mouth and selling their items at
meet and greets for the K-9 team.
We do something different
every week to market ourselves
and get out there, Yohnson said.
Our goal is to one day open a
store, Prevost said. We would
absolutely love that.
You can reach Southern Scents
and Specialties through its web-
site at southernscentsspecialties-
com.webs.com, through email at
southernss1@gmail.com, or check
them out on Facebook, Southern

The New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection
(NJDEP) recently reported to
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict administrators that samples
taken from three temporary mon-
itoring wells indicate that
groundwater at Seneca High
School is safe and has not been
impacted by local groundwater
contamination under investiga-
tion by the agency.
The temporary wells were in-
stalled in June and samples were
taken throughout the summer
and early fall.
The NJDEP will now install
three permanent monitoring
wells on Seneca High Schools
property on Carranza Road.
The agency expects the perma-
nent wells will remain free of
contamination, and is taking this
proactive step to monitor the high
schools groundwater to be sure it
is not affected in the future.
This is good news for the dis-
trict and Seneca High School stu-
dents, their families and our
staff, Emily Capella, LRHSD su-
perintendent said. Based on the
DEPs investigation to date, test
results indicate that the drinking
water at Seneca High School is
safe.
Capella added that there was
never a concern about the safety
of Senecas drinking water sup-
ply.
Ongoing test results from
Senecas drinking water well con-
tinue to meet or exceed drinking
water standards in compliance
with the schools NJDEP Safe
Drinking Water Permit.
In a March 31 letter to the dis-
trict, the DEP stated, It is impor-
tant to note that thus far, the con-
tamination (on other sites) ap-
pears to be present only to a depth
of approximately 70 feet below
ground surface (bgs) and would
not be a threat to the high schools
well, which draws water at a
depth of approximately 400 feet
bgs.
An updated list of Questions &
Answers can be found on the
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict website at www.lrhsd.org.

in our opinion
O
dds are that at some point in
your life you placed a bet on a
sporting event. It might have
been a big-time wager while visiting
Vegas. It might have been an office
March Madness entry.
The point is, betting on sporting
events is a part of our culture, and try-
ing to prohibit it brings back memo-
ries of Prohibition.
New Jersey residents want the op-
portunity to bet on sports. Or at least
the opportunity to bet on them legally,
as they already are betting on sports.
They said so in this months general
election.
Problem is, New Jersey missed the
boat years ago when the door closed
on legalized sports betting. Now the
state faces a myriad of hoops to jump
through before residents can legally
bet on hoops action.
Or so thats what a lot of people
think. We think differently. We think
the Garden State will get sports bet-
ting sooner rather than later, and
heres why:
First, millions of dollars are on the
table. Dollars that are not being taxed
because the wagering is taking place
out of the U.S. or illegally.
Second, government needs money.
All governments need money.
Third, eventually the politicians are
going to put these two things together
and realize that legalized sports bet-
ting simply makes sense. And when
that finally happens things will move
quickly. A simple decision that the
1991 law banning sports betting in
most states is unconstitutional clears
the way.
Sports betting wont solve all of the
states woes. But it will generate addi-
tional revenue and give Atlantic City
casinos a shot in the arm. Lets flex
some political muscle and get this
done.
Sports wagering a good bet
Hurdles will be overcome in due time
Bet on it
Government needs money. Sports
betting generates money. Need we
say more?

Conference reflects on beauty
of African-American women
On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Southern
Burlington County NAACP Women in the
NAACP Committee Presented: ENOUGH!
A Reflection on the Concept of Beauty
Among African-American Women.
Ken Gordon, president of the Southern
Burlington County NAACP, was driving in
his car one day when he heard an article
being discussed on the radio. Satoshi
Kanazawa wrote an article entitled, Why
Are Black Women Rated Less Physically
Attractive Than Other Women, But Black
Men Are Rated Better Looking Than Other
Men? which was published in Psychology
Today.
Ken was offended by this idea and even
more upset that the usual black repre-
sentatives did not speak out on this issue
and defend black women.

The invisible work of a teacher
No one believes all the extra work teach-
ers have to do after school. So dozens of in-
structors from Gloucester and Salem coun-
ties did their homework in public Thurs-
day, according to the Gloucester County
Times.
Teachers took all the student essays,
projects and homework they normally had
to grade at home and worked on them in-
stead at the Deptford Mall food court.

SOPA needs to be
stopped Now!
As an extreme, cant-live-without-it user
of the Internet, I get angry any time any-
one tries to police or patrol what I love so
much.
The Internet is a magnificent place
where I can obtain or share whatever I
want with whomever I want wherever I
want (for the low monthly price of $59.99
per month).
My loyalty to this free enterprise
makes me almost blind to any stiff that
says the Internet needs to be regulated in
any fashion which is why I utterly, and
absolutely, hate everything about the Stop
Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) thats current-
ly being debated in the House of Represen-
tatives.

Burlington County Sheriff
Jean E. Stanfield announced that
her departments annual toy
drive is officially underway and
that residents and businesses can
donate toys for children of fami-
lies in need at 50 drop-offs located
throughout the county. Stanfield
said that the collection would con-
tinue until Dec. 19, when sheriff s
officers will gather up the bins
and return them to the county
complex. Then, the toys get a safe-
ty check by consumer affairs.
Human service agencies work
with the sheriff to distribute.
We always receive a wonder-
ful response to the toy drive each
year, Stanfield said.
The holiday season brings out
the best of people in Burlington
County, and it enables us all to put
a smile on the face of a child who
might otherwise go without.
Last year, the department col-
lected approximately 1,000 toys;
the sheriff said she is optimistic
that it will exceed that number
this holiday season. Drop-off lo-
cations include municipal build-
ings and police departments,
county government buildings and
private businesses.
Toy drive runs until Dec. 19

The Burlington County Free-
holders, the Burlington County
Health Department, the Health-
care Community, Burlington
County College and numerous
other partners are teaming up to
ensure that everyone in the coun-
ty receives a flu shot and brings
immunity to the community.
The week of Dec. 5 has been de-
clared Burlington County In-
fluenza Vaccination Week. Dur-
ing this week, there will be many
opportunities for individuals to
receive flu vaccinations.
The Burlington County In-
fluenza Vaccination Week pro-
vides an important opportunity
for us to tell the community how
important it is to get an annual
flu shot, Burlington County
Freeholder Mary Ann OBrien
said. Getting vaccinated is the
single best way for people to pro-
tect not only themselves against
flu, but their loved ones as well.
Throughout Influenza Vaccina-
tion Week, the health department
will be offering free vaccinations
to all county residents over the
age of six months at the Burling-
ton Center Mall from noon to 6
p.m.
In addition to the flu shot, the
health department will also be of-
fering FluZone High Dose (a flu
shot designed for those over 65)
vaccines.
A clinic for children who need
a second dose will be on Dec. 15 at
9 a.m. in the Virtua Community
Health Center located at 1638
Route 38, in the Lumberton Plaza.
Numerous other partners,
such as Burlington County Col-
lege, are teaming up to ensure
that everyone in Burlington
County receives a flu shot and
brings Immunity to the Commu-
nity.
Getting a flu vaccine is easy. It
is available through doctors, the
health department and at local
pharmacies. Many employers,
schools and colleges and universi-
ties also offer flu vaccinations.
We encourage all Burlington
County residents to take advan-
tage of these free flu vaccinations
and help stop the spread of the
flu, OBrien said.
For more information contact
the health department at 265-5548.
County offering flu shots

an Mills Methodist Church.
The church is next to the fire-
house on the corner of Willow
Grove Road. and Old Indian Mills
Road.
This is not a fund raiser, but a
community service project.
All the money goes to the less
fortunate families of Shamong.
Please come out and support
the Cub Scouts in this worthy
cause.
The cost is $5 a plate for adults,
$3 for children and senior citizens

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders will host a
Victorian Holiday Celebration
featuring Santa Claus, unique
vendors, professional ice carvers,
live entertainment and more on
Sunday, Dec. 4 from noon to 5 p.m.
at Historic Smithville Park.
The whole family is invited to
celebrate the season in the his-
toric village setting that will be
specially decorated for the holi-
days and admission and parking
are free.The festivities will in-
clude a grand entrance by Santa
wearing his Victorian suit and ar-
riving by horse and carriage at 1
p.m. Guests may visit with him in
the Smithville Mansion court-
yard tent and are encouraged to
bring a camera for a special photo
with family and friends.
Throughout the day, enjoy a va-
riety of live entertainment in-
cluding a special holiday magic
show and holiday music per-
formed by the Pine Barons Bar-
bershop Chorus, the Jersey
Sound Chorus, and Les Finesse.
At 2 p.m., visitors of all ages
will enjoy a theatrical production
of A Christmas Carol presented
by the Riddlesbrood Players.
Professional ice carvers will
transform 300 pound blocks of ice
into frozen works of art during
the event. Visitors will also be
able to shop for the holidays from
a variety of vendors selling
unique items. The Friends of the
Mansion will also be selling
unique items inside the man-
sions holiday boutique. The
Friends of the Mansion at
Smithville will offer tours of the
1840 Greek revival building for a
small fee.
Once again, the mansion will
be dressed for the season in daz-
zling Victorian style and this
years decorating theme is The
Nutcracker Ballet. Proceeds ben-
efit the preservation and restora-
tion of the historic estate.
Visitors are encouraged to
bring unwrapped gifts to the
event to donate to the Burlington
County Sheriff s Departments
annual holiday toy drive. Guests
may take tags from the giving tree
to find out what items Button-
wood Hospital residents have re-
quested for the holidays.
The celebration is being hosted
by the division of parks in collab-
oration with the Friends of the
Mansion at Smithville. For more
information, call the Division of
Parks at 265-5858, or go to
