Release Scope and Limitations

This document describes the Version3 of the OPNET WiMAX models released to the WiMAX Consortium. This version contains the wireless pipelines needed to model the OFDMA and SC channels. Version3 models the following PHY channel impairments for OFDMA and SC: Pathloss Multipath fading. Multipath fading is only modeled for the OFDMA channels (it is ignored for the SC cha nnels, based on the assumption that the SC receiver performs equalization). Co-channel interference Also, Version3 includes the following features: Broadcast and Multicast connections. Control traffic from routing protocols and ARP will now use a built- in broadcast connection for transport across a WiMAX segment. One broadcast connection is available from each SS to BS and one from BS to all SSes. IP auto-addressing during a simulation. One IP subnet is assigned to each sector namely BS interface and its SS nodes.

Relation with Previous Releases

The functionality in Version3 is incremental to the previous two versions. As such, the additional functionality of Version3 can be toggled on/off for any given simulation. In fact, the behavior of the previous versions is still preserved. To toggle between Version1, Version2 and Version3 behavior, use the Efficiency Mode attribute accessible by editing the attributes of the WiMAX Config node. The modes: Efficiency Enabled, corresponding to Version1 behavior Framing Module Enabled, corresponding to Version2 behavior Physical Layer Enabled, corresponding to Version3 behavior The default value of this attribute is Efficiency Enabled.

New Attributes
Version3 introduces attributes related to the PHY channel description. To describe a PHY channel, it is sufficient to specify its pathloss model and its multipath channel model (the discrete power delay profile of the channel, as defined in the ITU channel models). We assume that the channel from an SS to the BS has the same properties as the reverse channel from the BS to the SS. For that reason, the attributes describing the channel are placed on SS nodes, under WiMAX Parameters/SS Parameters . They are Pathloss Parameters and Multipath Channel Model. The pathloss and the multipath channel model can be set independently of one another. However, not all pairs of multipath and pathloss models are standard. October 2006

The Pathloss Parameters attribute can be further expanded into three sub-attributes: Pathloss Model, Terrain Type and Shadow Fading Standard Deviation. In addition to attributes describing the PHY channel, each BS contains an attribute to specify the PermBase used to limit the effects of co-channel interference. The attribute to configure the PermBase is found under WiMAX Parameters/PermBase on a BS node. The permutation base (PermBase) is used together with the WiMAX physical layer profile to compute the subcarrier-to-subchannel map used by a given cell. A new attribute has been added to the WiMAX physical layer profile to define the subcarriers usage mode on the uplink and on the downlink directions. This attribute is OFDMA PHY Profiles/Frequency Division/<UL|DL> Zones/Usage Mode. It supports FUSC and PUSC modes for downlink and PUSC for uplink. Finally, both the BS and SS nodes have an attribute to specify their transmission power. This attribute can be set under WiMAX Parameters/Transmission Power.

New Statistics
New node statistics are grouped under WiMAX PHY. These statistics are used to measure the PHY cha nnel behavior during the simulation. For instance, pathloss and uplink or downlink SNRs can be measured.

Node-related changes
Among the existing nodes, the following have been modified to support the Version3 functionality: wimax_ss_wkstn_adv, wimax_bs_router_adv. In addition, a new node model has been introduced to represent a sectorized BS: wimax3_bs_atm2_ethernet2_spli4_wlan_router_adv.

Locating code changes

The new pipelines stages are found in the <opnet_dir>/models/std/wimax folder and are identified by names: wimax_xyz.ps.c. In addition, there are two external files under <opnet_dir>/models/std/wimax folder -wimax_phy_support.ex.c and wimax_phy_mpath_support.ex.c. Each external file has a corresponding header file under <opnet_dir>/models/std/include folder. In addition to these files, code changes have been made to other processes and external files too.
