dinner table. Sharon can be reached at (707) 833-0259 or at 1-800-543-7713. The ranks of female oenophiles are growing and the industry has answered their calls for classy and fun products that reflect their love of all things wine related. As Michael, the tasting room manager at Artesa Winery in the Carneros region of Napa reports, Women have absolutely fallen in love with the fabulous cork purses we started carrying this year. Made from the same cork used for wine preservation, the purses have the look and feel of soft, supple leather with some distinct advantages. Easier to clean than
leather, cork purses are stain and scratch resistant, as well as water resistant, making them a much more practical alternative. Best yet, they are environmentally friendly. No trees or animals were sacrificed in the process of making these stylish handbags. The purses are priced at $200 and are certain to produce a very grateful hug on Christmas morning. While the helpful folks at Artesa are glad to ship a handbag to you, a visit to Artesa Winery will give you a chance to pick up the perfect holiday gift for the wineloving woman in your life and at the same time allow you to shop with a glass of magnificent Pinot Noir in hand. Where else could you do that? The prize for nearly effortless holiday shopping goes this year to The Wine Train in Napa. They have made an arrangement with Costco to provide holiday shoppers the opportunity to pick up a sure-to-please Wine Train gift certificate while they fill their shopping carts with over-sized grocery items. A gourmet dining establishment housed in an antique train, the Wine Train provides a view of wine country splendor along the twentyfive-mile long track that winds its way through the heart of the Napa Valley. Gift certificates are good for both lunch and

dinner trains. A hundred dollar gift certificate will set you back only $79.99, giving you the chance to be a very generous Santa while staying within your holiday budget. These magnificent works of art come from the village of Laguiole, France. They are simply the finest corkscrew available when it comes to beauty, craftsmanship and durability and are destined to become family heirlooms that those lucky few on your gift list will keep for the rest of their life, then pass down to future generations of wine lovers. Forge de Laguiole corkscrews start at $100 each. These amazing tools can be found at all four locations of The Wine Hardware stores in Sonoma, Walnut Creek, South San Francisco and St. Helena. Beaulieu Vineyard
Legendary Rutherford Winery Celebrates Heritage in the Newly Opened Museum and History Tour
by Alexandra Charsley
It seems logical that Beaulieu Vineyard would open a new Heritage room to celebrate their long history of producing great wine. As more people are turning back to their roots, they have embraced this tradition and thats what makes them a destination winery. I have been drinking Beaulieu wines for as long as I can remember as their big, bold reds always deliver and happen to be my favorite. Their tasting room experience now offers so much more than tastings and winery exclusive information, but also a piece of their enduring legacy. In 1900, Georges de Latour founded his winery with the vision of creating world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from the exceptional terroir of Rutherford. In the century since, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet as well as one of the most collected American wines. The first Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted with grapes from the 1936 vintage by Andr Tchelistcheff, who tasted the wine in barrel and insisted on giving it an independent bottling. Today, this wine is widely considered the standard bearer of fine Rutherford Cabernet, with deep fruit character, silky tannins and impressive aging ability. This legacy honors the marriage between state-of-the-art technology and gentle, traditional winemaking methods, a combination that enhances the expression of their remarkable vineyards. Their new Heritage Room is a tribute to their beginning, their ability to survive during Prohibition, and to become a top producer of rich, classic Napa Valley wines. The original 1885 stone walls house the museum and the original beams were preserved. Guests will be the first to see the interesting array of historic pieces they have collected over the years; ranging from original winemaking equipment to sales ledgers from the post-Prohibition era showing that their Private Reserve once sold for $1.01 per bottle. We found this great collection of amazing pieces of our history stored away in an old warehouse. As much as we embrace new technology and innovation, our history is also what sets us apart and will capture the interest of curious visitors. We are very excited to finally be able to invite the public to come see what weve dusted off in our new Heritage Room, Graham Jones, Beaulieu Vineyard Hospitality Manager. They recently celebrated the release of the 2008 vintage of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This marks the first vintage to be made 100 percent out of their new state-of-theart winery dedicated solely to Georges de Latour Private Reserve. In
2008, under recommendation from legendary consultant Michel Rolland, Beaulieu Vineyard created a winery within a winery to produce their flagship wine. After more than 60 years of sharing space, BV's Georges de Latour Private Reserve has gone private with the recent completion of its own, new 9,600-square-foot micro winery. Having a brand new state-of-the-art winery is a dream come true for a winemaker. This facility helps me to achieve complex yet balanced wines that reflect the true character of our renowned vineyards, says Director of Winemaking, Jeffrey Stambor. Twice daily Historic Tours are being conducted and include a Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Tasting in the Heritage Room for $20 per guest. Advance reservations are recommended and can be made through their website at www.bvwines.com. The tour also allows guests to visit their historic Redwood Tank room where they will get to take in the wonderful beauty and aroma of their 75+ year old redwood wine tanks. Then, you are invited to taste the acclaimed wines that are such an important part of Napa Valleys past and present. While here, visit the Georges de Latour Reserve Tasting room and try the new 2008 release. The Reserve Room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and features their entire Reserve Wines including the Library Collection with wines dating back to 1970. Their gracious and knowledgeable staff will guide you through your experience at Beaulieu Vineyard whether you are a first-time visitor or a wine connoisseur. With the holidays approaching, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Tapestry Reserve or Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon are perfect gifts for the wine enthusiast on your list they are happy to guide you in your selection.

Bouchaine Vineyards
by Charles Neave
Their winemaking philosophy is to be admired. As legendary winemaker Michael Richmond explains, its all about using the cool and foggy mornings and warm and sunny days of the Carneros region in northern Napa to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the varietals that thrive here. The property has vineyards that surround it and climb up a hill where on a clear day you can see Mount Tamalpais and the taller buildings in San Francisco; most every day you can look down on the Napa River and parts of San Pablo Bay, which accounts for a large part of the regions microclimates. As to history, Bouchaine Vineyards is the oldest continuously operating winery in the region. The original winery was built in the late 1920s and today is a model for using sustainable vineyard practices to make distinctive wines. The wood that faces the winery buildings comes from old fermentation tanks that were removed and soaked until they could be straightened. By any measure it was quite a feat. The wines show lingering flavors and depth, a smooth texture and just the right your samplings in the attractive tasting room where on cooler days the wood burning fireplace will be going, and where youll likely be offered a choice of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and a Pinot Meunier. If they have it on hand, dont miss the Ros of Syrah from the Rockin H Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. They also make a dry Riesling, a Sonoma Syrah and a Carneros Pinot Blanc. Outside there is a wood deck facing gardens, a well-trimmed lawn with a horseshoe pitch and olive trees with vineyards just a few yards beyond. There is no doubt that if you plan to visit the area, a stop at Bouchaine is certainly a fine move. It is relaxing, enjoyable, sociable, friendly, fascinating and secluded and there is a new twist at every turn. The tasting room at Bouchaine Vineyards is open every day from 10:30 a.m until 5:30 p.m. Located at 1075 Buchli Road less than 15 minutes from downtown Napa, their telephone number is 1-800-654-WINE, or go to www.bouchaine.com. They are also on Facebook and Twitter. Tours of the vineyards and winery are offered daily at 10:30 a.m. and reservations are required. Dogs on a leash are welcome, by appointment.
level of acidity to pair with food. The Pinot Noirs taste of berries and cherries, coffee, smoke and spices. When it comes to the Chardonnay it comes down to fragrance, texture and finish. It is about combining the best of Los Carneros and Napa fruit. What it really comes down to is your own preferences. When you visit you can have

dirt lane, one doesnt know quite what to expect. What youll find is tucked away past a garden representative of the Valleys bounty and through the barrel cellar redolent with the winerys efforts. The tasting room is rustic but casual, reflective of an older, more agricultural sense of the Valley. As you might imagine, discussion of the Portmaking process often takes place, but in a truly relaxed manner befitting a long-successful family-run winery. I dont want to give everything away, but several totally unique tasting room displays await visitors, as does explanation of the fortification process and how and why the Pragers produce the least sweet Ports in California. Believe it or not, its possible to produce dry and off-dry Ports, but you have to visit the winery to find out the secrets of this process from the makers themselves. Its probably not a surprise by now, but the Pragers also make available something else fairly unique: they provide custom etched and sand-carved bottles of their releases. There are often a few of these kinds of items in different places around the Valley, but almost no one else can provide them to order for any special event or occasion. Its just another side-benefit of working with a family business, where even single-bottle requests can easily be handled. In the same vein, for those wanting an inner-circle experience, the Prager Port Club offers access to everything the winery makes at a discount, biannual wine shipments without an enrollment fee, and invitations to exclusive events at the winery, like the annual lobster feed. Its impressive to see what one family has produced through their combined efforts, and its a privilege to have access the products of their labors. Come up to Prager Winery and Port Works in St. Helena to see for yourself. As they say around the winery, Step off the beaten path. Trust me, you wont be sorry when you do.

Mark Beringer
The key to staying impactful in any commercial endeavour is the ability to pivot and move onto the next iteration of the business, and the wine business is certainly no different as wine and winemaking styles rise and wane and consumer interest is equally as cyclical. Artesa Vineyards and Winery, founded in 1991 in the then-unfashionable Carneros region just north of the San Pablo Bay by Spains Ravents family, owners of the Codorniu Winery among others and makers of wine for seventeen generations, has stuck around into its third decade because the folks in charge recognized this early on, and in bringing Mark Beringer in as VP of Production and Winemaking two years ago, the winery has accelerated its ability to make a wide range of great wines consumers love as its everyday practice. Artesas history is one which began with a vision of the Jewel of Carneros, and Barcelona architect Domingo Triay delivered on that vision with a pyramidal structure built into its surroundings. An expansive terrace provides full-circle views extending out to San Francisco on clear days. Water, fountains, soundscapes and more greet you on the outside, and light-filled, contemporary spaces adorned with modern artwork, sculptures and installations greet you on the inside, turning the wine tasting into an experience. Like a vision of todays Spain itself, the space and wines work well together to emphasize a mixture of modern and classic sensibilities, for which the winery has been justifiably celebrated many times over the years. So, why then turn to Mark Beringer? Who better than a fifth-generation California vintner, great-great-grandson of eponymous winery founder Jacob Beringer, to help a family whos been in the wine business themselves for 460 years to modernize their California winemaking and help to develop new wines? Mark started in the business as a preteen, stocking shelves and dusting bottles in his parents wineshop. Not content with sales alone, Mark learned the range of wine production activities while attending classes in Sonoma County before receiving his degree in Enology from Fresno State in 1990. Mark spent time at Glen Ellen Winery before being recruited by Dan Duckhorn to help with that winerys growth, and he was key to the launch of the Paraduxx and Goldeneye brands (and then separate wineries) for the Duckhorns. In 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle named Mark Winemaker of the Year for these accomplishments, and by 2008, Mark created a successful consulting business making lots of different wines along the way. It was the skills complimented by acknowledged success which made Mark the perfect fit for Artesas resurgence. Indeed, while Artesa was well known for its focus on vineyard location, under Mark Beringer these ideas have been taken to the next level, focusing on small-lot production; slower, more gentler winemaking which utilizes gravity flow and temperature control; and a series of limited-release
and reserve bottlings which allow the winery to stretch its technical legs and try new things. Using grapes from the best vineyards in Carneros, Alexander Valley, and Atlas Peak doesnt hurt, either, and neither does the same philosophy of minimal impact via sustainable agriculture at those sites. The results have been quite impressive thus far. New winemaking programs have produced different tiers of wines, allowing for dozens of releases, something most wineries simply cannot do. Mark has brought one particular vision, but he has embodied it in a far-ranging number of bottlings. Most wineries have neither the wherewithall nor the experience to handle the logistics, let alone the actual skill necessary. The attention to place, to showcasing where a wine is from, has become key; as Mark states, We are putting Carneros back into our wines. We are bringing Carneros back to the place it needs to be. Equally, Marks small-lot fermentations allow for complexity and subtlety to mix doing Pinot Noir, for example, in half-ton lots via upright barrels guarantees a range of expression in the resulting wines. These light touches produce more food-friendly wines. As Mark notes, Its not just a wine style but a chef style. To achieve this, blending these various pieces is key, akin to the instruments in music, a career Mark considered before wine: its the same mixing with the components for a wine. Unsurprisigly, the origins and the current resurgence of Artesa Vineyards and Winery lie in its name, which means handcrafted in Catalan, and with Mark Beringer now at the winemaking helm, that is truly what is taking place. Do yourself a favor and come to Carneros to see for yourself whats begun to spring up once again under Marks guidance. Cheers!

One Winemaker, Two Visions: Napa Cellars & Folie Deux Winery
by Josh Stein
Who says you cant have the best of both winemaking worlds, classically styled releases and wines that walk on the wild side? If youre Napa Cellars and Folie Deux Winemaker Joe Shirley, you absolutely get to have both and the results are fantastic wines in an environment designed for their enjoyment rather than pretension. The story of todays Napa Cellars and Folie Deux Winery really begins with Joe Shirley himself, which isnt so surprising given hes the winemaker for both wineries, and its his sensibilities youre tasting in the glass! California native Joe Shirley was born in Long Beach and raised in Napa. Joe was initially set on a pre-med sports medicine track at Occidental College in Los Angeles, but a barbecue at UC Davis professor Maynard Amerines (yes, that Amerine!) house changed all that: Joe returned to Northern California and received an MS in Enology from UCD. After graduation, he worked for Sonoma Cutrer before moving on to Trinchero Winery, initally as enologist, then named winemaker in short order. When the Trincheros wanted to take Napa Cellars and Folie Deux to the next level, Joe was the natural choice since he puts emphasis on the vineyards, with decisions about them driving eveything else: I spend a lot of time in the vineyards making harvest decisions. I find that every hour spent at harvest has way more impact than an hour spent in the cellar in the winter. With Joe at the helm, Napa Cellars philosophy is to put a modern polish on classic Napa Valley wines. As the folks at the winery like to say, these are delicious wines that possess all the character youve come to expect from Napa and with an attitude and price youll find rather refreshing. The goal is pure varietal expression from the wines the Valley is most known for without any of the negatives sometimes associated with other producers: classic, artistic and enjoyable wines without attitude. These are the wines people come to Napa to find, and they dont disappoint: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Zinfandel, as well as reserve releases of vineyard-designated wines.
Joe Shirley
In contrast, Folie Deux began, as the name itself proclaims, as a passion of two. The two being psychiatrists who loved wine, the passion being driven to highlight the best little nooks of Sonoma Countys vineyards: fog-shrouded Russian River Valley, vital for ageworthy Chardonnays; Alexander Valleys graveled soils, perfect for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; and Dry Creek Valleys Mediterranean climate, necessary for field-blended Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Carignane. Rather than seeking to go where others have been, Folie Deux gets to be as playful as possible. As the man tasked with maintaining both visions, Joe is well aware of the dichotomy, noting Napa Cellars has built its reputation on a very traditional style of Napa Valley wines, but we can push the stylistic boundaries of Folie Deux. And it is in the tasting room, with its laid back vibe and rock-n-roll soundtrack, that all comes together into something much more than its parts, and the thinking behind the duo makes a real kind of sense: you get different styles of the same varietals in some instances, allowing you to taste the differences in winemaking protocols, as well as wines which do not overlap because they cover different growing areas. And being poured at one of the coolest looking tasting bars in the Valley doesnt hurt, either. Equally, designed for contemporary sensibilities, the winery invites strolling around the property, exploring the grounds, taking a nap on a blanket or enjoying the sights from under the large oak tree adjacent to the tasting room; picnic grounds are available, too, so bring lunch with you when you come. The winery is next to nationally known Mustards Grill on Highway 29 in Oakville, so you can easily plan a complete days enjoyment of the valley with little in ultimate need of planning. Most wineries have a tough enough time just putting out reliably solid releases year after year. Under Joe Shirley, Napa Cellars and Folie Deux are doing most of the Valley one better: two different visions of great wines, neither focusing on anything but what matters enjoyment of the wines in glass! Come taste for yourself and enjoy the double results of one mans vision.

YOUNTVILLE
Jessup Cellars
Yountville is world famous because of its restaurants, wineries and wine country lifestyle. One of its best attractions, however, flies mostly under the radar except for those in the know. Thats what happens when you focus more on great small-lot releases and giving visitors a memorable experience you dont have the time to brag because youre busy doing it. That is Jessup Cellars. Theyre best known for big Cabs, Bordeaux-style blends, crisp whites, spicy Zins and a range of Port-style wines because they put their time and effort solely into making great wines and directly sharing them with as many people as possible. As any staff member will proudly proclaim if asked, Jessup is all about the experience. Walk-in visitors are welcomed at the tasting bar, but for those seeking a more intimate occasion, the by-appointment semi-private tastings, accompanied by a cheese plate, are the way to best enjoy the tasting room and staff. Taking place within Jessups art gallery, visitors get to enjoy a range of wines available only from the winery in a relaxed, no attitude environment. In fact, if you ask the right people around the Valley, youll hear the same response: its the staff at Jessup, their willingness to answer any question, their joy at getting to share what they love about the wines, which really makes the distinction. Mention this article to any of them to receive a complimentary tasting for two and youll get to see for yourself why Jessup Cellars only has to depend on word-of-mouth. When you visit, you will be given access to the full range of Jessup wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Port, Chardonnay, Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, and Zinfandel Port, as well as several other very special releases. In fact, people love the wines so much that Jessup Cellars had to create Twice-Yearly and ThriceYearly wine clubs to satisfy customer demands for more wine. Imagine that? Customer desire for the wines has driven Jessups growth, and its because of how good the wines and experience are that people will hesitate to give away the secret. Well, weve let the cat out of the bag go see for yourself what the Valley knows at Jessup Cellars in Yountville!

Cline Cellars
by Ronda Giangreco
For many who visit the wine country of Sonoma gaining a sense of the history of land and the people who love it is as essential to the experience as a trip to a tasting room. Few wineries offer a better opportunity to learn about the remarkable saga of the visionaries who made this valley what it is today than Cline Cellars. Located in the Sonoma-Carneros region, the winery was once the site of Sonomas earliest settlement, a Miwok Indian village. The estate also once served as the first camp of the Sonoma Mission. The California Missions Museum is located at the winery and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, providing visitors with a fascinating look at this era in Californias history. The warm and knowledgeable tasting room staff also loves to tell the story of the Clines and the history of the property while pouring the acclaimed wines for which Cline Cellars is famous. The Cline Cellars tasting room is located in a picturesque farmhouse from the 1850s and surrounded by some of the most spectacular and inviting gardens in the entire wine country. With more than five thousand rose bushes, this oasis of floral splendor is magnificent to behold in the spring and summer months, but the fall is also a wonderful time to enjoy the gardens seasonal transformation. With the colors of autumn offering an array of orange, gold and red hues, the Cline Cellars gardens are the perfect spot for a fall picnic. But wonderful historical sites and gorgeous gardens are not what Cline Cellars is famous for. It is the wine that draws visitors from around the world to this awardwinning winery. Their complimentary tastings that are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. provide visitors with an opportunity to sample some of the very best wines that the famed Carneros region has produced. But dont stop there. The nominal fee for reserve tastings is well worth the expense to enjoy the older vintages that are poured in Cline Cellars tasting room. If youve got a group of five or more, please contact (707) 940-4061 and they will arrange a special tasting just for you and your friends. Public tours are also available and are conducted daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. For more information, go to www.clinecellars.com. Cline Cellars is truly a cornerstone winery of the Sonoma Valley and no tour of the area would be complete without an afternoon spent in their magnificent gardens, sipping some of the most delectable wines in the entire California wine country.

New Menu from HKG Tasting Room Takes Seasonal Wine and Food Pairings to a Whole New Level
The HKG Tasting Room in the charming town of Glen Ellen in Sonoma offers special wine and food pairings created by Pastry Chef Khambay Khamsyvoravong from the award-winning Kenwood Inn and Spa. Chef Khambay matches the wines from Hop Kiln Winerys Russian River Valley HKG Estate varietals with a seasonal array of culinary delights. In addition to experiencing a Food and Wine Flight on site, guests can purchase to-go items from the tasting rooms retail case, including individual pastries and sweet and savory pies. Pastry Chef Khambay, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, creates the delicious pairings at the tasting room as well as goodies to go. Im most excited about being able to put a savory twist on traditional desserts, and utilizing the bounty of seasonal and local produce that Sonoma wine country has to offer. The petit desserts and pies that we create appeal to my sweet tooth without much of the guilt. Sometimes, I cant (or shouldnt) eat a whole pie by myself! The HKG Tasting Room offers a selection of current wines produced by Hop Kilns talented young winemaker, Chuck Mansfield. Selections include: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio from their Russian River Valley Estate. The rotating food and wine menus highlight a minimum of three seasonal tastings, in addition to chocolate and cheese pairings, all matched with HKG wines.

Collin Cranor at Nottingham says hes got eight lots of Cabernet from seven different vineyards and hes never seen anything like it: everything right around 24.5 brix and excellent flavors and chemistry. The Smith Ranch is especially fine-looking, and the Clark Cab is as dark as it gets, with great cherry and coffee aromas. Hes really jazzed about the Grenache and Syrah from Marina vineyard, and is especially excited by the Cabernet from Casa de Vinas. Heather McGrail is frankly glad that harvest 2011 is over! She lauds the fruit off the estate, noting that the Chardonnay and Cabernet came in great, with the Cabernet perfect at 25.5 brix, looking good and tasting even better. She has cute wine purses for the holidays ladies! She also makes custom wine baskets from $50 and up. Get your holiday shopping while youre out for the Honkin Holiday Food Fest!
