LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this module students should be able to: critically analyse and appraise the key roles and functions of leadership and management within organisations using relevant theoretical concepts; critically evaluate individual and group behaviour in respect of personality, barriers to perception and the formative processes of attitudes, values and beliefs; formulate and justify appropriate techniques and strategies based upon a comprehensive understanding of contemporary approaches to leadership, management and employee motivation.
Study Areas:
The study of individuals within organisations including a study of the behaviour and motivation of individuals at work. Intrinsic and extrinsic factors that motivate workers. Content and process theories of motivation referring to theories of such key writers for example Maslow, Herzberg, Alderfer, Mitchell, Farren, Taylor, Moss Kanter, Vroom and Adams. The perceptions and assumptions of people working within organisations and teams including the dynamics of interpersonal perception. Attribution theory, stereotyping and perceptual distortions and errors. The importance of recognising and valuing diversity within the workforce key writers studied include for example Guirdham, Kandola and Fullerton, Cook, Berne and others. How individuals learn and the meaning and nature of learning. Facilitation of learning in the workplace. Cognitive theories and learning styles and the outcome of learning.
