EPPA6213 MANAGEMENT CONTROL AND ACCOUNTING JOURNAL ARTICLE REVIEW

Introduction A review article is expected to provide a summary and/or a synthesis of the findings of selected research contributions being published by other authors. The goal of journal article review is to help you become familiar with current state of the relevant publications on a given topic. It helps to develop your critical and independent thinking skills as well to develop effective writing skills. For each article review, you need to summarize succinctly mains points the authors are making and identify the strengths and weakness of the work. The journal article review is conducted through two avenues: a. b. A presentation to the class. A 2 to 4 pages written review (single spaced, 12 points Times New Roman) handed after class. No marks will be given to late submission and submitting review through e mail will not be attended.

Suggested Format for written review Introduction part o o Give complete bibliographic reference for the articles Overview of the articles What the study about? What are the main hypothesis/questions posed by this study? Are the study objectives clearly stated? Does the title accurately describe the study? Why it an important question to ask/investigate i.e. motivation of the study? Do the authors present solid rationale for it? Describe the study design.

Contents of the articles o o Literature review How the study links with other related studies? Hypothesis developments What are the theoretical or logical arguments used in developing the hypotheses? Research methodology What methods did the authors use to reach conclusion? How were the data collected and analyzed? Who were the subjects? 1

Results and discussion Discuss the major findings and results. Did the data support the stated hypotheses? How useful or significant is this (what did the author(s) say about it? Did the authors acknowledge the limitations of their study and discuss how these might affects the results and their interpretation? Conclusion Summarize the researchers conclusion What was the major outcome of the study?

Conclusion paragraph o Restate your overall opinion of the article. o Briefly present recommendations. o If necessary some further qualification or explanation of your judgement can be included. This can help your critique sound fair and reasonable.

Presentation to the class Presentation will be in the form of a power point presentation. You will be given 35 minutes presentation. The slides are limited between 10 to 20 pages. Make sure your slides are in a point form rather than words. Use your creative in presenting your journal article review such as utilizing the use of graph, tables or other visual aids. Your presentation should in line with the suggested format of written article reviews with exceptional of more detail discussions on the contents of articles. Nevertheless, the discussion should be the argumentative statements used to describe the phenomenon. For example, hypotheses development section, arguments used (either theoretical argument, logical argument or empirical or anecdotal evidences) in explaining how and why the hypotheses are developed. The rest of the class is encourages to engage with discussion by posing question.
