The continued relaxation of the film industry's regulation and censorship laws has accelerated our society's moral

decline. Discuss this view, with reference to specific media concepts, contexts, and critical debates. In the past people are known to of been more polite and have more respect for others and just generally have better morals; since then some say that society's morals have been declining and people have been getting less polite and less respectful. Some say that because the film industry is continuing to become more relaxed in the way they regulate and censor films that it is having an effect on society. For example in the 1930's if one was to see a woman with her top off in a film one would frown upon it; though these days that situation is most certainly not frowned upon half as much. This suggests a moral decline in society. I am going to discuss reasons about how the relaxation of the film industry's regulation and censorship laws may and may not of accelerated out society's moral decline. Albert Bandura conducted the 'Bobo Doll' experiment, which was an experiment that studied the effects of violence in the media on children; this experiment came to the conclusion that children who are exposed to violence are more likely to act in physically aggressive ways compared to those who were not exposed. This would mean that if children saw bad things on a film that they would copy, and because the regulations on films are continually becoming relaxed it means that children are becoming exposed to more things in films than they would have been in the past, thus causing a moral decline. The film 'The Dark Knight' got around 200 complaints about it's rating because they all though that it should be at least a 15 rating because of the suggestive violence within the film. Though 200 people does seem a lot, it isn't really if you compare it with the amount of people in the whole world. The film 'Natural Born Killers' has been confidently linked to at least eight murders. There was a Texan child who decapitated his classmates head because he wanted to be famous like the natural born killers, there was also 2 students from Paris who killed 3 policemen plus a taxi driver these students were later discovered to have the 'Natural Born Copycats' poster on their bedroom wall. The BBFC sat on the film for 6 months before passing it for theatrical release in February 1995. The media was blamed for influencing these murders. On the other hand Kermode said to blame media for society is like blaming a mirror this statement means that the media is just reflecting society, so when we see media it is just showing us what our society is like, which means that Kermode disagrees that media effects us and that really it is our society that is affecting the media. The 'Hypodermic Syringe' Theory says otherwise; this theory agrees that watching violent films will make us violent etcetera, and is saying that the media is like a syringe which injects ideas, beliefs, and attitudes into our heads.
