GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF CAPSTONE PROJECT & SIMILAR COURSES 1.

Applicability: The following guidelines shall be applicable to capstone projects/ dissertations / thesis / research project/ term project/ community and technical project or any other course requiring the student to do an independent study under the guidance of a Research Supervisor for a long duration (i.e. one or more terms). The evaluation process detailed here shall be applicable for holding the evaluation of a single student also. Important Note: These guidelines are NOT APPLICABLE to M.Phil, PhD, M.Pharm, M.Sc Pharmaceutical Chemistry & MPT programmes. 2. 2.1 Evaluation Criteria and Weightage The student shall be evaluated on the basis of following criteria: Continuous Assessment by the Research Supervisor Mid Term Evaluation End Term Evaluation 20% 30% 50%

The continuous assessment of capstone projects and dissertations / thesis shall be done by the Research Supervisor in the following manner: Regularity Quantity of Work done Quality of Work done Total 5 5 10 20

In case of Capstone Projects and similar courses except dissertations and thesis (Mid Term and End Term evaluations) all examiners will allot marks independently on the following parameters Amount of work done 5 Quality of work done 10 Quality of written report 20 Responses to the questions asked in presentation 15 followed by viva Total 50

In case of Dissertations and Thesis the examiners will allot marks independently on the following parameters: For Dissertation I / Thesis I Appropriateness of the problem Review of Literature Presentation Response to questions Report Writing Total For Dissertation II / Thesis - II Review of Literature Methodology of Research Presentation Response to questions Report Writing Total

The conduct of Mid Term and End Term evaluations shall be scheduled and monitored by the Examination Division. The Mid Term evaluation will be held along with the Mid Term exams and End Term Evaluation will be held along with the End Term exams. Recommendations by the Panel: In all such courses under the purview of this policy which have two parts (e.g Capstone Project I and Capstone Project II) the students shall be handed over a copy of recommendations for improving the quality of work. Even if no improvement is required, positive remarks must be given in this form. The evaluation panels shall hand over the recommendation form to the student (s) and retain its carbon copy The students are required to attach the recommendation form in the report prepared for subsequent evaluation. Report Submission : The students must submit the final project report in printed and electronic form as per the following guidelines: Report Format: The report must be prepared and submitted in the format prescribed by the department. It must include a certificate by the Research Supervisor and a declaration by the student in the prescribed format titled Formats for Certificate and Declaration.

4.2 Printed Report : 4.2.1 Wherever a report is to be evaluated by one or more external evaluators, 3 hard bound copies of the reports shall be submitted by the student in the administration office of the concerned school as per prescribed timelines. 4.2.2 Wherever a report is to be evaluated by internal evaluators , 2 hard bound copies of the reports shall be submitted by the student in the administration office of the concerned school as per prescribed timelines.

4.2.3 All the reports duly approved (signed) by the Research Supervisor shall assigned a unique number which will be auto-generated through an electronic interface. The numbers shall be assigned to reports submitted by the due date (without fine) and by the last day for submission with fine. One copy of the numbered report will be returned to the student to brought along at the time of viva. 4.2.4 The Administration office of the concerned school will provide two numbered copies of the report to the panel members for review before the viva. Finally, after the viva one copy of the report will be retained by the Research Supervisor & the other copy (available in case of external evaluation only) will be deposited in the library. Hence, the library will NOT retain any copy of reports which are evaluated internally. 4.2.5 In case of late submission, the students will deposit late fees in the Accounts Department and obtain a receipt of the same. The receipt will be generated through the electronic interface which will be date and time sensisitive. Hence the last report will be accepted by 5: 00 p.m on the last day of report submission with fine. Thereafter the interface will STOP assigning report numbers and generating late fee receipts. All the remaining students who are registered in courses to which this policy applies will automatically awarded R grade. 4.3 Electronic Report: An e-copy of the report shall be submitted by the student on the UMS interface in a secured pdf format (max size should not exceed 5 mb) as per prescribed timelines. Submission of electronic copy is required in addition to the printed copy. If a student submits e-copy on time but fails to submit the printed copy, one is liable to pay the fine and face any other consequence of nonsubmission of report. Time line for Report Submission: The report submission dates shall vary for courses falling in Autumn and Spring terms in the following manner: Courses Falling in Autumn Term (e.g. Capstone Project I / Dissertation I) Report Submission Upto the Last teaching day of the term Fine No fine

Award of R Grade R grade: R stands for resubmission. In case a student is awarded this grade then one is required to re-submit the report and reappear for viva. The resubmission of the report is to be made within one week of the commencement of the next term as per process applicable for normal submission of printed as well as electronic report. In case a student fails to make the resubmission by the due date R grade will be converted to F grade A student will obtain R grade in the following cases: i) In case the student fails to submit the report in all the permissible time limits. ii) In case a student is unable to secure enough marks to meet the passing condition. iii) In case a student is absent in ETE. Note 1 : In case R grade is awarded due to non-submission of report in all the permissible time limits, the student will get one chance to clear the R grade and it will be when the next Reappear exam is scheduled (e.g Non submission in Autumn 2011, will get a chance to reappear in Spring 2012). If the student does not submit the report as per prescribed timelines or does not appear in the exam or fails it, F grade will be awarded. Note 2: The reappear exam for Capstone Project/Dissertation (or similar courses) shall be scheduled only once. It shall not be scheduled in batches for different candidates

In case of being awarded R grade student will be required to pay a resubmission exam fee of One Thousand Rupees. The reappear viva shall be taken as per schedule prescribed by Examination Division. In case external examiners are to be invited Exam Division will provide the proposed dates to the concerned department so that they can invite the examiners accordingly.

If a student is not able to pass the reappear viva at the first instance, then F grade shall be awarded. No additional chance to reappear shall be available and the student will be required to re-register for the course. Students who require hostel facilities to pursue research work during the summer vacation or due to pendency of their ETE (reappear) or due to any reason will be required to pay the prescribed hostel charges. In case a capstone project/similar course has two parts i.e. Capstone I and II and a student obtains R Grade in part I then one can provisionally register in Capstone II. In case one is not able to pass the reappear exam F grade will be awarded and student will be deregistered from Capstone project II

Award of F grade: F stands for fail grade. In case of F Grade the student is required to re-register for the course in the next term. The student is required to repeat the research project and rewrite the report / thesis. One can select a fresh topic this time. F grade shall be awarded to the student in the following cases: i) ii) The student could not pass the reappear exam. In case of plagiarism. In this case a UMC case is to made and referred to Examination Division. If the plagiarism is finally proved then UMC Board may order the award of F grade in the course and any other suitable punishment as may be deemed fit. Reasons for the decisions so taken shall be recorded in writing.

In case a capstone project/similar course has two parts i.e. Capstone I and II and a student obtains F Grade in part I then one cannot register in part II unless one has passed part I. If a student is awarded F grade , one will re-register for the course as as per backlog registration guidelines.
