Org. for Americans Under 30 Reacts to November Jobs Report: Congress is Holding Us Hostage
Data Reveals Slight Improvement in Unemployment Rate Among Young Americans In Spite of Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. Released earlier today by the U.S. Department of Labor, Novembers jobs report reveals that young Americans ages 18-24 hold a 15.3% unemployment rate marking the ninth straight month of an unemployment rate above 15% for the demographic. Matthew Segal, President and co-founder of OURTIME.org, a national non-profit organization representing and standing up for Americans under 30, sees the urgent need for more job creation for his generation in spite of Congresss stall. Congress is holding the young American workforce hostage for nothing more than pure political gamesmanship, said Segal. The need for more jobs ought to transcend re-election campaigns, but partisanship is once again being held above all else, and Congress is clearly tone deaf to the populist sentiment fueling Occupy Wall Street. Its no wonder my generation is turned off by politics when we see such immaturity from our leaders. President Obama must take the entrepreneurial approach: do everything in his power to go around Congress call their bluff, push his executive order privilege to the limit, and fight for job opportunities for young (and all) Americans. In the meantime, OURTIME.org encourages all Americans this holiday season to save money and support young entrepreneurs by buying young. The organization launched its Buy Young initiative this summer as an online marketplace of companies founded by Americans under 30 to support young entrepreneurship, job creation and thoughtful consumerism. Over the past few months, OURTIME.org has been outspoken on Americas economic issues: demanding universities immediately cease the practice of allowing Wall Street recruiters preferred access to students in exchange for financial contribution with a Stop the Brain Drain petition; polling its members on their support of the Buffett Rule, supporting the boycott of political contributions with Starbucks CEO Howard Schultzs Upward Spiral Campaign; and launching a petition in August entitled Vacations Over! calling on Congress to Cancel their vacation, head back to Washington, and get back to work on behalf of their constituents.
